  • How to Jailbreak/Unlock/Activate iPhone 2G on 3.0 Firmware - PwnageTool
This guide will show you how to jailbreak, unlock, and activate firmware 3.0 on the iPhone 2G (not the iPhone 3G, not the iPhone 3G S) all at once using a custom .ispw created with PwnageTool 3.0.

You need to download PwnageTool 3.0 and the iPhone 2G 3.0 firmware file.

Note: Safari does not download the .ipsw files correctly - it decompresses them as soon as they're downloaded. We don't want that. Use Firefox to download the .ipsw, not Safari. Or you can ctrl+click the decompressed folder & click the compress button.

Connect your iPhone 2G to iTunes and sync it (you will want that back up later)

Note: restoring will remove all Jailbreak app settings and WinterBoard themes. You can back that all up following this guide if you want to.

Once you have downloaded the firmware file and PwnageTool run PwnageTool. OS X my ask you if you really want to run it, choose open.

    Hit OK to the Copyright

Since we are jailbreaking, unlocking, and activating the iPhone 2G click the iPhone on the left, make sure you have Expert Mode elected in the top left, and click the arrow in the bottom right.

PwnageTool will search for the correct .ispw (you downloaded it earlier). It will probably find it but if it doesn't you can browse to where ever you downloaded it. Once you have your firmware file selected, click the blue arrow button.

Select General and hit the next arrow.

Make your screen look like the one below (default root partition size should be fine, I changed mine, the larger partition you have the more Cydia room . . . ). Hit the next arrow.

Make sure the options I have checked match. You can update the bootloader if you'd like. Hit the next arrow.

    Hit the next arrow.

Select (or un-select ) the package installer(s) you want. If you un-select both don't bother continuing. Hit the next arrow

Change logos if you'd like then hit the next arrow.

Now select Build and hit the next arrow.

Choose a place to save your custom .ispw that you'll remember.

It starts building your custom .ispw.

Enter in your password when prompted.

If your iPhone is pwnd and you are selecting Yes you can continue to iTunes further down in the guide. If your iPhone is not pwnd currently or you are not sure hit No.

    Follow the instructions.

    Hit Ok.

Close PwnageTool and start iTunes. Hold down the option key while you click restore.

Browse to, and select your custom .ispw.

    iTunes does its thing.

    Hit OK.

After your iPhone restarts BootNeuter will run to unlock and activate your iPhone. Don't mess with it while it is doing its thing. Once complete you can connect to iTunes and restore settings from back up or set it up as a new phone

Congrats you're done and have a jailbroken unlocked iPhone 2G on 3.0 firmware!

To all Iphone 2G users who wants to upgrade to 3.0 OS, you need to downgrade your "iousbfamily315.4.1log.dmg". This have an effect in properly putting your Iphone 2G in the correct DFU mode. I experienced it and gave me an error of unsuccessful DFU mode.

      Hope this helps.....

      Excellent guide gents, many thanks.
Worked 1st time for me but I did stumble on getting the iPhone into recovery mode as I had previously Pwned it.
Maybe you could add that it's a slightly different process in the guide?

For anyone else experiencing the same problem:
      1. Start iTunes
      2. Sync if needed and then remove iPhone from dock (or USB cable)
      3. Turn off iPhone
      4. Hold down the home button and then reconnect, you should get yellow arrow, or usb-to-mac graphic or Mr Jobbs doing his Russian thing if you had previously kept the bundled graphics.

I'm trying to update my GF 2G iPhone. It's jailbroken and unlocked but she left it at firmware 1.1.1 (3A109a) Modem firmware 04.01.13_G
When I try tu use pwnage tool 3.0 to update it, I go as far as to where you select "buid" and when I hit the arrow appears a message that says: "No bootloader V4.6 found" What the heck is that??
I have a 3G and updated a couple of times using pwnage and it never asked me for something like that before...
      Help... Thanks.

      Same problem..... and PROBLEM SOLVED.....

Incredible but True, after about 8 failed attempts of upgrade my 2G from a Powerbook 12" with OSX 10.5.7 and iTunes 8, I spent some hours of navigation on the web, and it's seems the bug could be this.....

"PWNAGE 3.0 DOESN'T WORK ON MOTOROLA CPU.... ONLY WORKS ON INTEL" that's because Pwnage 3.0 crashes on the creating process of custom ipsw file.

After see this comentary on a local south american forum, I try to upgrade from the 1.1.4 to 3.0 with Pwnage 3.0 on my wifes MacBookPro, and works fine.

Then I put my 2G on my Powerbook 12" and use the restore backup file saved a few minutes before on iTunes....... few minutes later...... Ta Daaaaaaa........ 2G upgreaded and working

      Regards from Chile and enjoy.......

best tutorial ever. Mine isn't finished but i have good signs which lemme guess it'll work.

You should write that you must stay at itunes 8.2 ; i have 2 imacs, one with itunes 8.2 and the other with the 8.2.1 update ; i tried maybe... 10 times with the updated imac and it didn't work... first time with my "old" itunes, rock on

OK guys, Just spent last night doing this. heres the deal for power pc users. I just downloaded the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw file .. (just read all the previous posts. I know you cant tell were its uploaded here. but I do think you can pm people... (my idisk/ noall666) I just used the file someone else created with there intel computor. I just then put my iphone in restore mode. the first file I had sucked, i got it from a torrent site, it hd the no bootnueter, i think, so anyway. I found a good file. put my phone into normal recovery mode. went to restore using the alt/option key way... located the file.... BAM! waited patiently for it to do its thing. it restarted, waited again for it to upgrade baseband etc... I didnt need to do anything, its automatic. and BAM! jailbroke, unlocked.... (tried my uk sim card works fine...)
summary. Power pc users(thats old macs.) just download the ipsw file from someone else and recover with that file. simple as that....
      later
