  • Free App Alert: Splashtop Remote Desktop

Not quite sure how this one slipped through the cracks, but Splashtop's amazing Remote Desktop for iPhone and iPod touch app is free for three more hours at the App Store!

Splashtop's remote desktop app, which I've been using for a while now, allows users to access and manipulate their desktop computer(s) from their iPhone or iPod Touch. You can use your desktop's web browser, including flash, to watch any format video, and stream your entire music library. The only caveat is that the program only operates over wifi (there is a workaround for this on their website). Other programs like iTeleport: Jaadu VNC, allow users to work over 3G, but also cost $24.99 and don't allow streaming audio and video via your desktops web browser.

Oh, and Splashtop allows you to play PC and Mac games remotely as well...awesome.

Get the app here or hit up the App Store on your iDevice. The iPad version is only $.99 for a limited time as well.

    *Update*
App is still free as of 12:20 a.m. eastern standard time. I'm not sure if the deal will expire at midnight pacific time or when Splashtop decides to end the deal. Anyway, buy for free ASAP!

Is this iPhone you are talking about? If so, Got a link? Searched the website and all I found was experimental login. But no success with My3G or Experimental. I saw where they posted iphone is not supported as of yet, but working on an update..

Yea I wouldn't pay for it but I'd grab it free from "**********" lol. Even though this basically does the something thing as logmein, I still prefer logmein cause it just seems to have a smoother operation imo.

Thanks! The ability to stream video with audio is real nice, haven't gotten around trying it yet, but will do when I get home. If the FPS is ok, it's a keeper.

Say, are there any native RDP clients available for iOS?

Got it here as well but can't download the desktop software...

Maybe their servers are overloaded? Am I the only one? Can't download either the Mac or PC version

Well I downloaded it when it was free but about 30 minutes later it was changed to .99 (which is still a great deal).

I got it to work immediately after downloading the server on my Mac, via WiFi. Since this article indicated there was a way to make it work over 3G on their site, I did a little investigating and finally found the info. A few modifications to my router later, and now it works great over 3G as well!

For those who have an Airport Extreme Base Station as their router, just follow the instructions in this link: Connect from Outside - Airport Extreme : Splashtop Remote - Support

They also have a link if you happen to be using a Linksys router: Connect from Outside - using Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router as an example : Splashtop Remote - Support

I haven't had any type of VNC-style app before, although I'd contemplated it. The fact I saw this article and that it was free (at the time) got me to jump on board. I love it! Now I can stream any of my iTunes music without having to load it onto my iPhone 4!

iTunes has 2 versions, 1 selling at $0.99 and the other one is free.
      Look for the free link.

There is no F1,F2,F3,etc keys would be great if they can incorporate that into system.

The 0.99 version is the full version that was free yesterday and up until this morning. The currently free one that actually has "FREE" in the title is a version that only lets you connect for up to 5 minutes.

I missed the sale, but $.99 isn't going to break the bank. Thing is, I already use TeamViewer. How is this better/ different?

I'm not familiar with TeamViewer other than what's listed in the app store, but I don't see that it indicates it is capable of delivering streaming audio/video. That is, Splashtop allows you to click on a song in iTunes and it plays on your iDevice. Or you can watch, say, a Hulu video in your Chrome browser. If TeamViewer allows you to do these things, then I suppose there really isn't a difference. If not, then there you go.

This app is garbage. It requires you to install their crappy software and doesn't allow you to use the native Windows RDP protocol.
