  • Apple: Sales of Apple TV to Top 1 Million This Week

Sales of Apple's recently refreshed Apple TV are expected to exceed one million units this week. How do we know? No need for market analysts or investigative journalists to get to the bottom of this one. On Tuesday, Apple released a formal statement regarding the rampant growth in sales and popularity of Apple TV.

Apple today announced that it expects sales of its new Apple TV® to top one million units later this week.
While the usual iDevice suspects - iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches - remain the hottest gifts this holiday shopping season, the Apple TV has effectively muscled its way into must-have territory for many Apple fans this year. The $99 Apple TV - which lets users watch HD movies, TV shows, and stream content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe - has exploded to such a degree that users are now renting and purchasing over 400,000 TV episodes and over 150,000 movies per day.

While frequently overshadowed by Apple's other big releases of 2010 (namely, the iPad and iPhone 4), Apple TV has not gone unnoticed. Time magazine recently acknowledged the device as one of the top 10 gadgets of 2010. Overall, the list was dominated by Apple. The iPad was ranked #1, the MacBook Air #4, the iPhone 4 #6, and the Apple TV #7.

Quick ques since I haven't been keeping up with the atv

What are the odds it comes with a firmware if one is purchased now?
Can you stream from a NAS over wireless N? If so, how well?

      Thanks!

Apple TV really isn't that bad. For the price it is now and the extra's it comes with, I think its pretty good. It's certainly doing a lot better now then what it was in the past.

Google TV looks sweet, I'd like to try that out.

I still can't believe people actually bought this thing. A ROKU X-DS is light-years ahead of it. I have 1080p, legacy audio/video connections, the ability to add anything i want, and can play ANY TYPE OF MEDIA file via PlayON. The ROKU X-DS is the king of $100 and below media players. Nuff said

Does it have to be PayON or can it be any Windows Media server such as TVersity?

It has to be PlayOn because you have to add the PlayOn private channel to the ROKU. Channels are sort of like ROKU's version of independent apps.

When it takes Apple instead of independent source to release the estimated sales figures like all other Apple devices, I believe iTV is not doing that great and the numbers may be bloated by Apple.

I bought mine on Saturday and I love it so far. Still waiting to upgrade my iPhone/iPad to 4.2.1 though. Airplay works flawlessly between my MBP and aTV

My Apple TV 2 is on 4.1 ATM and I used redsn0w for the jailbreak and firecore to install a browser, last.fm, grooveshark and others. Nito TV also makes some good JB apps and tomcool. Firecore costs $20 but you get free apps and updates for a year. Well worth looking into, in my opinion.

I think I'm going to get one after Christmas here and put it in my game room. If thats all I have to have in that room to stream all my movies and songs then that's great.

The entire point of the AppleTV is to watch iTunes content on your big screen TV. It cannot connect to Hulu at this point though.
