  • Apple Axes MacBook Air Upgrade Kits

Apple has pressured accessory maker PhotoFast to halt export of its SSD upgrade kits for MacBook Air, according to reports making the rounds this morning. 9to5Mac is quoting a "source close to the company" as saying that Apple threatened to kick the Taiwanese company out of the MFi program if it didn't submit.

The PhotoFast GMS-SFV1, which offered larger, faster solid-state drives than the stock Toshiba modules provided by Apple, was announced at the end of October. The upgrades were to come in 128GB and 256GB SSD sizes with a claimed speed bump of 250MB/s sequential read and write speeds as compared to 140 to 160 MB/s on the stock MacBook Air. Additionally, a USB 3.0 adapter was to be provided to transfer data during the upgrade process and allow reuse of the original SSD as a USB jump drive.

According to the reports, Apple objected to the marketing of the the PhotoFast SSD upgrade kits as specifically for the MacBook Air. Similar to the way Apple killed HyperMac's external batteries with MagSafe charger cables, they appear to have blocked the solution as an unauthorized aftermarket accessory. Apple is very protective of its licensing arrangements, and reportedly threatened to ban PhotoFast from the MFi (Made For iPod/iPad/iPhone) program and prevent it from selling its other ranges of Apple-approved accessories.

Given that most of the individual parts of the kit are freely available off-the-shelf components, there is still hope that the kit may go back on sale once Toshiba starts directly selling the Blade X-gale SSD chips used in the MacBook Air, or at least that modders will be able to make their own kits.

I have come to the same conclusion. It's just sad.

That is ridiculous... so now not only we can not modify Apple software (iOS) but we can not upgrade hardware?? who the heck you think you are apple!!... this really makes me not want to buy my MBP for x-mas and just go with regular laptop and hackintosh!

I can see why they did this. It's all about business strategies and profits. These PhotoFast offer faster speeds than the Apple upgrades. People just buy the base model Air and then buy these upgrades. I'm sure it's taking away from Apple's sales and they wanted to nix that before they lose too much profit.

How on earth do they have the legal grounds to do this? This is simply absurd...

Technically, the maker is pulling this product not because they have to, but because they want to stay in the Apple camp. They didn't have to fold under Apple's pressure, but they apparently produce other accessories that Apple allows, so their choice was an economic one. Evil Apple wins again.

I agree.. Maybe apple doesn't like being shown off. I mean, as long as they don't market it as officially approved by apple, then what gives? Im starting to get a sour apple taste in my mouth. Isn't apple trying to create a monopoly by doing this. Only allowing Toshiba the rights means they can charge what ever they want. We need competition.

They do have the legal grounds to do it. Business as usual for Apple.

He made no statement that it was or was not OK. He stated factual reasoning behind Apple's actions.

And I asked a question in return. Do you have anything to add to this discussion?

What are your thoughts on the subject?

It sounds like I'm apologizing? Sorry, I guess I'll stop posting intellectual insights and reasonings

And I really am not going to take a position on their decision. It's just a business strategy albeit dirty. That's how the free market competitive business world goes sometimes. It also explains why Apple gets a patent for everything, because they don't want someone stealing their ideas. Let's not get into that because that's a whole other discussion! All business decisions aren't gonna please everybody, but Apple is just doing what they think is best for the company.

Oh and thanks Poseidon for having my back! haha

Apple is more about having their hand in every dollar to be made, versus the consumer who bought an Apple product being able to upgrade or customize their purchased Apple product.

Someone should have the balls to stand up to SteveO and his band of jacka$$s and just make the damn parts available. Maybe Microsoft should back the manufacture.

Thanks for one of the only posts that talks about facts out of a neutral position...

Not like all the other hater comments... I guess Apple is just a little too much in the media, thats why "negative" things like that get huge intrest, but for sure apple is not the only company to defend their products: we just don't hear about the other firms cause we have no intrest in them, thus we only get stupid hater comments as if microsoft or any other firm (doesn't even have to be in the computer industry) wouldn't defend their products...

wow! best first post in a forum!
If you don't like Apple products, then just don't buy them...

The stats talk for themselves.. A bad (or in your words: horrible) product range wouldn't have made it this far!!
