More Talk of December 9th Apple Media Event
Tuesday morning brings with it accelerated talk of a possible Apple media event on or around December 9th. Despite initial thoughts that the event would be used to introduced a new or refreshed product, all indications suggest an Apple media event that, strangely, will be all about the media. With talk that News Corp titan Rupert Murdoch will share the stage with Steve Jobs at the press gathering, it's becoming an increasingly safe bet that the early December event will emphasize a new content subscription development regarding the iPad.
Since the tablet's introduction, Murdoch has purportedly been on the short list of incredibly powerful media moguls obsessed with the iPad and its potential for reviving the dying publishing business. Consequently, months of speculation have swirled around Murdoch and his supposed plans to give a new beginning to newspapers and magazines via Apple's enormously popular iPad. Given the massive ebook sales and major newspaper content distribution prompted by mobile devices just this year, the media-savvy Murdoch surely sees an even bigger goldmine in the wings than do the rest of us.
Yesterday, John Gruber of Daring Fireball indicated that he has heard serious talk of the December 9th date for Apple's next event. "My understanding, based on information from sources not at Apple, is that this is not something like iBooks -- there is no central 'iNews' or 'Newsstand' app from Apple," Gruber says. "Rather, it's a new subscription billing option for apps -- true recurring submissions -- paid through your iTunes account." Both before and after Gruber's account, however, talk from other news sources reveals a similar plan by the folks at Apple and News Corp.
The official announcement of an approximate December 9th media event may come as early as this week.
