  • Apple App Store Swells to New Heights

There was a lot to absorb today from Apple's comprehensive press release heralding the arrival of iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. From making the "Find My iPhone" feature free and able to use sans MobileMe, to countless new attributes for the iPad (like multitasking, folders, etc.) and the dawn of Game Center, AirPlay & AirPrint, Apple is keeping us on our toes today with no shortage of sweet arrivals for our iDevices.

Understandably, there's a lot to be distracted with from Apple's iOS 4.2 drop today. One such example of a buried morsel of overlooked information is the fact that customers have now downloaded in excess of seven billion apps from the App Store. We've also officially breached the 300,000-level in terms of applications now available for download in 90 countries. Remarkable, of course, is that 40,000 of those apps are native to the iPad - a relatively astounding feat, given the short period of time the iPad and its corresponding app store have been available.

Apple also took the opportunity to note that there are presently more than 125 million iOS users around the world who have the option of enjoying the aforementioned 300,000 apps, which are spread across a range of 20 categories (all of which we are familiar.) Impressive stuff, but the crowded app space through which we all navigate is about to get even more crowded. As the Mac-specific app store comes online, developers will have an entirely new platform to tinker with, lending credence to the claims of many analysts that the sum total of apps across all iDevices could range between 500,000 and 750,000 by the end of 2011.
