  • Apple Unleashes iOS 4.2.1 GM for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch to Devs

On Thursday, Apple released to developers a brand new version of the Golden Master iOS firmware for the iDevices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Bumped up to 4.2.1 Build 8C148, we may now be closer than ever to the final version delivering fixes to the glitches, bugs, and other shortcomings with which many of us are familiar.

    From Network World:

The new GM has reportedly been released to address bugs and errors found in previous builds. Earlier on Thursday, MacRumors published an e-mail sent out by VoIP developer Toktumi--responsible for calling app Line2--that warns customers not to upgrade to the latest version of Apple's iOS. "If you upgrade to iOS 4.2 and you are running Line2 in the background, the ringer will continue to ring even after an incoming call is answered," the e-mail notes, stating that the issue has been designated as "severe" by Apple Developer Support.
As it stands, there is widespread speculation (but no concrete evidence) that the public version of the new firmware will hit on or around November 24th. Today, however, marks a substantial update for the iPad and squarely places the tablet on a fast track to being on "the same software track as the iPhone," effectively giving life to iOS 4 on the iPad and a multitude of hot features, not the least of which is multitasking.

Nonetheless, despite the update and version increase, sources have been quoted (including in a report published by MacRumors) that Apple is allegedly telling developers not to resubmit their applications. For now, the release is a positive step in the right direction and a stellar indication that a final, public release is imminent.

Do u know how f'd up it feela having the latest iPhone 4 and being able to use everything with exception of the "phone feature"? It BLOWS!!!

I just want to be able to be reached on my iPhone! Have to do so with the BB instead till Apple decide to stop playing games and make the final release.

Even my gf who's a long time BB fanatic/addict switched to the iPhone4 after having played around with my iPhone4 She saw a whole new world when she actually got to use the iPhone. And guess what? She needs the same god damn unlock I do! LOL

You do understand that the new unlock that is being developed only applies to the 3G and 3GS, right?

There are a couple of vulnerabilities being examined on the iPhone 4's baseband, but AFAIK there is no working unlock being developed for it.

True. The last change they did to it they kept 4.2 GM but just changed the build number.

I was on 4.2 GM 2, tried updating, failed and stuck in restore mode saying cannot connect to update server. My internet is fine... And now it's still stuck in restore mode and I can't do anything. I've never been NOT able to get out of this. Any ideas? I'm trying to restore to 3.2.2 and it's 90% done and just stuck, says restoring iPad... about 10 mins now.

Nope no Wifi Sync. I've even tried running TinyUmbrella and force it to 3.2.2 and it doesn't finish. Then I keep getting the iPhone Update Server not available whenever I plug it in... I'm stumped!

Apple has been having the update server go down multiple times today.

This is what I keep getting...

And I should add, if I unplug it, and plug it back, there's no message that I need to restore.. I just get the message below!! Is there any way to force 3.2.2 back on at least?

Yep. Their server must be down again.

Yeah at least an hour... I'm still not having any luck... I managed to force it out and get it to be recognized in DFU, and after many failed attempts at 3.2.2, I'm trying 4.2.1 and it makes it to preparing iPad for restore, and it just stays stuck there, shows the progress bar on the iPad and nothing moves...

I can't imagine it being down for that much longer. Never seen it do this before

It needs to verify 4.2.1, not sure how to get by that

Man this is ridiculous, bad timing to try and update on my part I guess. I've just never been able to force it out and restore before... shouldn't it work if I use TinyUmbrella and go back to my 3.2.2 SHSH? Cause it gets stuck at 95% on that too...

Agreed. Knock on wood, I've had no problems with jailbreakme and 4.0.1 so I'm sticking with it for a while longer.

Am I reading this wrong? It seems to say that iOS 4.2 is available to install now???

If it's really that confusing, GM means 'Golden Master' not Gold Master, not Golden Member, not Go Masturbate, Golden Master.

anyone know if tinyumbrella could kick it out of the verify stage... or is it just for errors?
