  • Apple Unleashes iOS 4.2.1 GM for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch to Devs

On Thursday, Apple released to developers a brand new version of the Golden Master iOS firmware for the iDevices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Bumped up to 4.2.1 Build 8C148, we may now be closer than ever to the final version delivering fixes to the glitches, bugs, and other shortcomings with which many of us are familiar.

    From Network World:

The new GM has reportedly been released to address bugs and errors found in previous builds. Earlier on Thursday, MacRumors published an e-mail sent out by VoIP developer Toktumi--responsible for calling app Line2--that warns customers not to upgrade to the latest version of Apple's iOS. "If you upgrade to iOS 4.2 and you are running Line2 in the background, the ringer will continue to ring even after an incoming call is answered," the e-mail notes, stating that the issue has been designated as "severe" by Apple Developer Support.
As it stands, there is widespread speculation (but no concrete evidence) that the public version of the new firmware will hit on or around November 24th. Today, however, marks a substantial update for the iPad and squarely places the tablet on a fast track to being on "the same software track as the iPhone," effectively giving life to iOS 4 on the iPad and a multitude of hot features, not the least of which is multitasking.

Nonetheless, despite the update and version increase, sources have been quoted (including in a report published by MacRumors) that Apple is allegedly telling developers not to resubmit their applications. For now, the release is a positive step in the right direction and a stellar indication that a final, public release is imminent.

      Confused

Has 4.2 been released to the public?
Or is it still Only for the beta/testers?

I believe I read that 4.2 will be released to the public for all iDevices at the same time correct?

No, it is not released to the general public yet. It still is in beta.

And, isnt the first GM usually the final push before a release? It seems to strain credulity that there have been 2 re-pushes after the initial GM.
From what I have read previously, the term Gold Master is used by DVD & CD producers to describe the disc containing the original data that is copied to thousands of retail discs for distribution and then sale. So they probably use the term in the same manner, describing it as the end of beta testing and it is now in the distribution state, except there are definetly no DVD's or CD's involved.

Sorry I clicked on the wrong post. This was meant for someone else.

no stay away until the full version is released. The beta will be buggy and has the potential to brick your iPhone

      Safe, Yes.

hey... alright I updated to 4.2.1 but I was a bit disappointed...

AirPlay does not support the old appletv and airprint does not support my oki printer... Besides these to major features in 4.2.1 that I can't make use of there are a few nice tweaks to it, such as making playlists on the go etc...

Well nonetheless I downgraded back to 4.1 and rejailbroke my iPhone 4...

So for all of you that want to try it out: It's safe, and you can easily downgrade back down provided you've got your shsh blobs saved

But I guess it isn't really legal, but I mean how are they going to find out? With the thousands of dev UUID registered at apple..

      cheers

Darn. Some of these iPhone forum sites have it wrong then.

You've been able to make playlists on the go since 4.0.0.

Right here, my iPad is bricked because of this update. It jammed half way through the update and now I can't do anything to it. Can't restore, can't update, can't force it to downgrade. So how about eating those words? Unless you an magically kick my iPad out of recovery.

Restoring to 4.2.1 jams at Preparing iPad for Restore, and trying 3.2.2 jams at Restoring iPad...

User error. It is virtually impossible to brick an iDevice these days; you essentially have to be intentionally trying to brick the device (overwriting/deleting specific code) or unplug the device from the computer during certain parts of the upgrade/restore process. All examples mentioned are direct results of user error.

      DFU mode can cure all.
