  • PdaNet Update Hides Tethering Usage from Wireless Carriers

If you’ve been tethering your iDevice without a data plan from AT&T, then you may have received an ominous text message instructing you to either stop your unauthorized tethering activities, or face being automatically enrolled in a data plan costing upwards of $45 a month. PdaNet has just released an update that includes a convenient “Hide Usage” feature that should put an end to AT&T’s threatening text messages once and for all.

PdaNet now includes a feature that allows users to hide the exact type of data that’s being downloaded. This gives users the freedom to use their devices any way they please, without incurring any additional monthly service charges. PdaNet 5.01 now includes a “Hide Usage” feature under the Advanced Settings, multiple Wi-Fi connections are now supported and the app has been completely rewritten to improve performance. Of course, the usual bug fixes are also included with this update as well.

It would seem that AT&T has finally discovered a way of determining if a customer has been using third party tethering apps or not. Apparently, AT&T does not simply look at the amount of data being downloaded, but rather looks at the type of data being downloaded instead.

AT&T tracks unauthorized tethering by checking the type of packets moving through their network. Packets not coming from an iPhone are checked and text messages are then be sent out to offending users informing them to stop what they are doing or face being charged for it. When this issue first came to light, it was widely believed that AT&T was simply cracking down on the heaviest data users on their network. Now it seems that AT&T has a more effective method of determining data usage among its customers

Now that PdaNet has developed an effective defense against AT&T’s crackdown, other developers are sure to follow suit and upgrade their apps as well. If you’re a MyWi user, you probably won’t have to wait too long for an upgrade to be released. We’ll just have to wait and see if this becomes a whole new game of cat and mouse within the jailbreak community.

I got an email from them again this month but this time it was on my son's iPhone..... I can now call total BS on this crap that they are pulling..... I set up his iPhone 3GS when he got it 2 years ago and he barely uses it to it's full potential....

He was still on 3.1 with no tethering app or ability to tether. He used between 5-9 gigs a month using dtunes and mxtube.

They stated that "sometime in the past" that line was used for tethering...... NOT A CHANCE!!!

I now believe that some how they know your iPhone is jailbroken and they are fishing that you "might" be tethering and change your plan....

I have been asking a friend of mine to let me know if she gets a notice from them because she's used about 30gigs a month for the past 6 months on a non-jailbroken iPhone 4 with unlimited data and she hasn't heard shyt from them...... Total BS......

My only guess it AT&T can sen if your accessing the network through a private ip first. Mywi just turns your phone in to a wireless router and assigns everything that connects to it private/local ip. I know whatsmyip.org can see my public and private ips so I imagine AT&T can to.

That's just my guess, forgive if it's dumb. It's 5:15 am here and I'm just now getting ready to go to sleep. Damn 20 hour days make me retarded.

I for one don't feel safe at the moment risking my unlimited plan because one program claims they can hide it. It may be one way they hide how the data is shown but I have not seen any solid evidence in the many threads and pages here at ModMyi and other various websites. I'm actually very surprised there was a news story about PDANet here. Until there is some evidence that this is the way AT&T is detecting tethering I'll stay away. With all the data I use (Netflix, MLB.TV, Pandora, and other online radio stations) I can't risk my unlimited plan just because one program claims they hide tethering. I bet PDANets sales have gone through the roof by claiming they are hiding tethering from carriers.

I'll continue to keep my data high until I can safely tether again. Just a note, I think it is quite funny that as soon as I stop tethering and just have normal use I am at 12 GB with four days left. I never went over 6GB while tethering.

If you have been tethering without a TETHERING plan.

If you don't have a data plan AT&T would just add the data plan when they detected you had an iPhone.

I blame my tethering usage on apps like Netflix and pandora lol xD they asked me once why I used so much data. I told them that it was because of those 2 apps. Which was...... Partially true lol

I RECEIVED THIS AFTER USING THIS APP FOR A WEEK AFTER MY FIRST DEAD LINE.

Some people here tell me to change TTL so that it matches iPhone... haven't tried it but even so wouldn't that just defeat the purpose of this new feature? - it's suppose to hide tethering but I got hit!

Why is it AT&T is cracking down on iPhone users, but not Droid/BlackBerry?
      Droid can still tether...

What hiding level did you use in "hide tether" level I or level II? It seems level II points the phone at mobile sites only, maybe that makes a big difference in att's detection.

Let us know how that goes and if they email you again. What will you do if they still say you're tethering?

MyWi soon to follow im sure! SWEET! Although yes AT&T can obviously see data usage, they can't prove HOW it is being utilized. I have nothing to hide hahaha!

I don't think AT&T is tracking people that are going on non-mobile website the iPhone can access non-mobile website so there's got to be some other reason how they are tracking people and cracking down on theme . Has anybody else received notice from AT&T about AT&T changing their data plan after using this application pdanet ?

And on another subject in mind. im i the only one that thinks this? but AT&T should not tell you how to use your data you pay for it your not stealing it you pay for unlimited data that they give you. if you use your data However you use it you're still paying for it and it shouldn't matter to them how you use it you're still paying for it.i think at&t is just looking for a way to take unlimited away from everybody because there network cant take it (sucks balls) and the customers are the ones that are pain for it... Not to mention that the date tethering plan came after we all got grandfathered under the unlimited plan so that's their fault isn't it... I don't know maybe it's just me. You be the judge
