  • Apple Battled with Google and Amazon over Beatles Library

On Tuesday, Apple announced that it had finally secured the rights to the Beatles' music catalog for inclusion in the iTunes Store. And while it took much longer than most Beatles fans would have preferred, the Beatles have now found their rightful place within music's grandest digital storefront. But fewer than 24 hours after Apple's big announcement, more details are becoming known about the struggle that took place to seal the deal.

According to a report Wednesday in The New York Post, Apple was engaged in a fierce battle with Google and Amazon to reach an agreement with the band's label, EMI. Ultimately, the deal secured by Apple is one of exclusivity that will last throughout 2011. By Wednesday morning, the Beatles' album "Abbey Road" cracked the top ten spot on the iTunes album charts.

If you're thinking, however, that EMI's decision to openly embrace (for the first time) the world of digital music downloads was made strictly for the benefit of music and Beatles fans, think again. As the Post reported, EMI is in deep debt and the financial distress weighing down the company was likely the biggest factor considered when digital rights were given to Apple. It isn't yet clear just how much money EMI will pocket from the deal, but the Beatles' music will likely generate substantial sums of money for the embattled label and the surviving members of the band and their families.

Disappointed in what exactly? How does any of this possibly affect your life so much that you feel disappointment?

Despite, everyone's blatant "disappointment" here, I've been hearing that the albums have had overwhelming success in the iTunes store. But I guess that just means no one who posts here went and bought any Beatles music.

Ya, like Beatles fans just didn't buy it off Amazon DRM free long ago, or from how many websites you can get music from for free let alone ripping it from their CDs that they undoubtedly have if they are real Beatles fans.

That's pretty much the most judgmental statement conceivable.

Why is everyone calling them g@y? This better not be because you still can't get over your disappointment.

I can't help myself... I do not know why Apple made such a big deal out of it to be honest... the Beatles music has been around forever and many have it. But good for Apple!

The real news isn't Apple successfully negotiating with EMI for rights to resell recorded Beatles tracks.
I want to hear how well they handled the Estate of Michael Jackson, and their claims to republishing rights.

If the iPad is being marketed as an eBook device, I can see room for enterprising lawyers to claim
that distribution of music to that platform constitutes Publishing in the old, traditional sense.

(and are the Beatles more or less orthosexual than MJ? Not completely off-topic...)

It's amazing to me how soft and easy a lot of you are on Apple.....I mean I LOVE my iPhone 4 too, but that doesn't mean I will not point it out when they basically throw a giant lie on their homepage. Lying? False advertising? Whatever you want to call it.

So yes it is disappointing, not so much what a HUGE letdown their announcement was, but how they went about doing it......

A day you will never forget?? Really?? Perhaps I will never forget it, remembering it as the stupidest gimmick/stunt Apple has ever attempted.

Yea considering MJ owns the rights to most of their music wonder how much his estate will be getting from this deal.

If the iP* is merely a device for playing back audio recordings - they get some of the collected royalties but not too much.

If the iP* is... something analogous to a "book" holding music that's been printed and published, they could be entitled to a much heftier chunk.

Sure, its a stretch, but Cupertino ought to be on high Zombie Alert right about now.
