  • All Beatles Songs Now on iTunes

As has been rumored for the past 24 hours, Apple today announced that they had obtained rights to the Beatles' music catalog on the iTunes Store. Apple has had a teaser on their home page since early yesterday with the legend "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget." Eyebrows were raised by the apparent reference to "Another Day," a Paul McCartney song from his solo record "Ram" that was written during the Beatles' "Let it Be" sessions. Other hopeful rumors - such as the long-awaited streaming iTunes or all-you-can-eat music subscriptions - didn't pan out.

Steve Jobs had been trying to make a deal with the Beatles' corporate entity Apple Corps Ltd. many times before, but negotiations have always broken down. The two sides have been suing back and forth since way back in 1978, when the Beatles alleged that Apple Computer infringed the band's trademark in the name and logo of Apple Corps. Apple settled in 1981 for an undisclosed amount, and agreed they wouldn't compete in the music business. However, in 1989 Apple Corps sued again, claiming that the music production capabilities of Macs violated the deal, and again in 2003 over the iTunes Store. Finally, Apple just bought up all the trademarks in question and licensed them back to Apple Corps.

The Beatles are still huge sellers forty-plus years after breaking up. They have sold more than 177 million albums in the US alone, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Songs from all 13 albums are now available on the iTunes Store, along with a box set for $149.

according to Wikipedia. LOL!!!!! Fail. You could've wrote that for all I know! I seriously doubt some half***ed site I've never heard of got the licenses before iTunes. Every single other source but you and Wikipedia say that no site had the licenses until now. I have seen a couple sites CLAIM they have the licenses though, but the Beatles music isn't just going to some place 5% of people use before iTunes.

I'd rather see the announcement "Steve Jobs learns how to hold an Iphone".

Marketing/Hype? It was a one page update the day before. Nowhere else they announced or mentioned it. The blogosphere (god I hate this word) like always took something relatively minor and ran it into the ground much like everything Apple related.

The Beatles on iTunes has been something a lot of us have always wanted for years now. Yes, you have been able to get the CDs for years now but that's not the point. The Beatles are one of the most iconic bands in music history. Their music not being on the biggest digital music story was an obvious omission. This could also push for other bands (ACDC as already mentioned) to bring their music to the digital age.

And seriously, it's The Beatles! They changed and re-invented music forever. A lot of people don't really pick up on it, but look back at all their albums and music. They were only around for 10 years. A single decade! In 10 years (7 really if you want to nitpick) they created and brought so much to music when other bands stale and go their whole lives doing the same thing over and over and over.
I totally agree. I'm sick of hearing people talking about how Apple overhyped this. It was the public that overhyped it, just like everything else from Apple.

I have been avoiding this thread because I didn't want to read all the 12 year old Bieber fans complain about the Beatles.

Did you people really think they would make this announcement about a firmware? Don't you think they would have had a live event for iTunes Cloud or iPad 2? You kiddies were only let down by your own expectations.

I for one will celebrate the day by kicking back with the white album and a beer.

Wasn't announced in any other way. Websites (such as this one) took the obvious sensationalist approach and hypes the hell out of literally nothing and suddenly since it's not everything you wanted, Apple is a troll that wasted marketing only because of "some band".

Again, all of this over a splash page. As for the actual announcement, I can't reiterate enough how big of a deal it is. Even if youre not a fan of The Beatles, it's hard not to see their influence everywhere. And now they're finally in a digital format in the biggest music store.

Do you find it pointless when a movie gets re-released in blu ray because you already have it on DVD? Or VHS? Apple has been wanting The Beatles in their store for YEARS.

Every Apple announcement/keynote for the last 5 years has had "Beatles in iTunes!" rumor tagged to it. And here today it finally comes true, and it somehow is a negative thing? Get real.
I am blown away by this also. I can't believe people and blogs are calling this overhyped when they are the ones that overhyped it.

People seriously need to stop advocating piracy on these forums or anywhere else. Do you use installo- you should know what I'm talking about if you do. This site is so anti-piracy it censors it out. Stop advocating or sympathizing for it here.

The two of you do understand that music piracy (not software, that's an entirely different topic) is one of the most overblown and fictitious problems that exists today, right?

It would be insightful for you to realize the impact that the Beatles have had on pop/rock/underground music since their inception.

Totally agree! It's sad that people actually schedule their sleep around an Apple announcement.

Have fun in your liberal school, learning more ways to rip society off. Please find time to also learn that books don't teach you everything, and professors teach you what they want you to learn instead of what you should learn.

A college education is a great thing, but most people use it for nothing other than how you just used it. Just because you have the intelligence to read a book and pass a test, or get drunk for a fraternity, doesn't mean that you are "smart."

Mark Zukerberg is smart. He knew HOW to APPLY his knowledge.

Not everyone is as closed minded as you. I'm 28, and I like the Beatles. Also, my grandfather knows his way around a computer better than my mom! It's not age, it's mentality.

Having the Beatles on iTunes will open doors for other groups finally joining the ranks, like AC/DC.

Nah, I would've been fine with that also. I like both groups.

We need Garth Brooks also, all he has on iTunes is licensed crap and collaborations with artists that are on iTunes.
