  • Rumor: Apple May Acquire Sony

    It's an eye-opening headline for certain, and one that's making the rounds throughout various media today, as Apple is believed to be considering a strategic acquisition of Sony. For now, we must responsibly classify this one as a rumor until more concrete evidence surfaces. But with better than $50 billion in the bank, Apple can certainly afford the logical buy. But just because Apple can... doesn't mean that it will.

    When rumors of the potential buyout first leaked, the trading volume of Sony exploded and escalated close to 3% at one point. And while many analysts have dismissed the rumor-talk, Sony and Apple aren't talking - a situation that could speak volumes.

    Barron's was among the first to note that Apple may soon scoop up the consumer electronics giant. The speculation, however, also included talk of potential acquisitions for Adobe and Disney. Sony, however, remains the most likely contender for an Apple buyout, especially given the recent comments of former Apple CEO John Sculley to Bloomberg, suggesting that Steve Jobs is head-over-heels enamored with Sony.

    During Apple's most recent earnings call, Jobs uncharacteristically jumped on the line to offer comment on the runaway growth and earnings of his company. It was at that time that Jobs made clear his intention of using Apple's massive cash reserves to make big moves within the tech world. And an acquisition of Sony would fit that description perfectly.

      If Apple didn't want to mess with Microsoft Products at all, why do they allow you to dual-boot with just about any windows OS?

      I really hope this is false as it's bad enough with Apples prices the now.
      Check your sources and find out why that isn't true.

      $800 million difference. That is a lot of money, but we're talking about net worth's of almost $230 billion. Doesn't seem like so much anymore.

      Federal Trades Commission would never allow it... I highly doubt this would happen...

      Yeah, it's a bit insane when $800M can be looked at as a rather insignificant amount (less than half a percent).

      All the rumor buyouts that they say Apple is going to do for some reason I cannot find a connection in any direction or path that Apple is on.

      I mean the rumors included EA, FaceBook, Sony, Disney, etc. The only one that I can see possible as a move forward on the gaming front would be EA. Sony is to massive and a whole new ballfield for Apple with all of it's divisions. Disney most likely won't happen; plus SJ already has a massive amount of stock in them.

      I see this as highly possible but the repercussions that would occur in so many different aspects of technology would be huge;

      Its not just the games industry, there is professional sound equipment, movie making equipment e.g high definition cameras used to make the movies, Sony Picture (Sony's own Movie company) as well as end user products like T.Vs laptops etc...

      Apple's world domination continues!!!

      As far as I can tell, you don't (typically) get banned just for calling another user a 'moron',
      but if that user happens to be a Moderator (or Super Moderator), you'll get an infraction for sure.

      OTOH they can call names all they like :3

      another reason Appl£ want Sony hmm, maybe look here and here

      I'd say so long iPhone but I hate Android;

      Android: it's like buying something thats like what you really want and know it can never be it, but you settle for it anyway and then kick yourself for buying it

      Now I want to see an Apple Game System that is just a PS3 but with the AppleTV/Front Row UI. Think about it..... a complete gaming system with everything you also get from an AppleTV. Of course with all of Apple's crazy twists. If Apple actually acquires Sony, it would have almost no choice but to start adding blueray support on Mac computers/laptops.

      You do realize that there is a ton more to Sony than just gaming systems, right? Plenty of tech areas where Apple has basically no experience in whatsoever.

      Sony has been on a steady downward decline in market value and profitability for the last decade. Apple has no reason whatsoever to purchase Sony. I can't think of a stupider acquisition. Apple has no interest in the Playstation since they wish only to push their own platforms for gaming. Apple has no interest in Blueray and is actively removing optical media capability from their mobile devices. Apple already makes top-notch hardware so I can't see where Sony's "expertise" would come in handy. The only value I can see Apple finding in Sony is MGM and Sony's other movie rights and holdings, but the media holdings alone wouldn't make the purchase worthwhile. This is just another flashy headline from Messany to draw in the eyes to turn out more page hits.

      Ain't gonna happen. Period. Sony isn't for sale and Apple wouldn't buy em if they were.
