  • Google TV Shows Off Apps & Content

Google and Apple have gone to war in a number of markets, from phones to mobile ads to music. Yesterday, Google made an advance on yet another one of those fronts, previewing what kinds of content will be available on the yet-to-be-released Google TV platform. As Apple found out, content providers are freaked out by the idea of set-top boxes that get programming over the internet. Google is doing an end-run around those concerns, by working with them to customize their websites for use with Google TV. As Google makes its plans clearer, the differences between the Apple TV and Google's offering are coming into sharper relief.

Google will - as they did with Android - not build their own hardware, in this case working with manufacturers like Sony and Logitech to build their software platform into their equipment. The company updated its Google TV site on Monday with a tour of the new platform's feature set. Right up front, they highlight the most significant difference between Google TV and Apple TV, with the slogan "TV, apps, search and the entire web… together at last." Rather than the Apple TV's closed "Lowtide" interface, Google TV will have apps right from the start like Twitter, Pandora, Napster and Amazon Video On Demand as well as custom offerings from CNBC and the NBA, and with access to the Android Market "starting early next year.

Both companies have struggled to overcome resistance from the major movie and television studios due to their concerns that Apple TV and Google TV could cannibalize their cable and satellite TV revenues. In particular, Google's approach of making all Web video accessible on its box made the studios worried that their programming would get lost amid all the different content, or pirated and redistributed for free. Google refined its pitch to providers, and now claims they have been "overwhelmed by interest from partners on how they can use the Google TV platform to personalize, monetize and distribute their content in new ways." The Google TV blog highlights web content from Turner Broadcasting - including TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim - as well as the apps from the NBA, NBC and HBO.

As with the iPhone - which had no third-party apps when it was first released - it seems like the jailbreak community will save Apple's bacon yet again. The absence of apps on the Apple TV will be a major liability for the device once Sony's Internet Tv and Blu-ray Player as well as Logitech's Google TV box are released later this month.

I like the user interface for searching all of your programming and the internet and the ability to customize my favorite shows, music or feeds to a home screen. However, I'm not sold on the TV apps. I watch TV to watch a show or movie.....not minimize a window and bust into a tweet. These apps screens will be loaded with advertisements and be useless. If I didn't buy a 58" HDTV to watch content in a smaller screen with **** all around it! Now if Google releases it's own Apps and games, then it would be useful. We all see how successful the Blu-Ray live feature is on it's players! No one wants to tweet or browse the internet from their TV while watching something. That's why I have a laptop and iPad. Also, the AppleTV will have Apps and games on it soon. Sure, I can't search across my DirecTV programming or internet with it (I can already search all of DirecTV through it's own software and I can save my 9 favorite channels on the main screen......oh, and they even have their own apps now too), but I can still rent and watch movies, listen to internet radio, watch YouTube, browse photos, and watch any content I have on my computer or bought/rented through iTunes. I'll take iTunes over Amazon VOD and Napster any day of the week. Plus, I'm not wanting to pay $200 for Logitech's Google TV box. Google may not see a huge success for their product if the cost remains that high. It'll be a niche product just like the ATV.

so what you're saying is that i should just ditch the dream of being a super mod and change my sn to "ridiculous"??? I don't follow Google crap, therefore I asked if anyone would know. Do you know? NO, you don't. So you'll just relish in the glory of bashing what you think is a newbie... thx bro.

it's not about copying each other. it's about doing it better.

and it looks like android will eventually do it better than iOS, as far as market share.

open systems are always better than closed.. we should know this, we're a JAILBREAK community.

Wait, why the hell can't people be satisfied with regular old fashioned plasma HD TVs. I still have a regular 100 pound low-def TV. Why would we want watered down mobile apps apps when we're at HOME anyway? Or is a laptop so 2009? In fact, I only have a 512 MB 2.8 GHz single core processor computer running Windows XP with a 20 pound monitor, and my iPod. And guess what? I'm completely happy, and never find myself saying "Man, I could use another computer, especially while I'm laying on a couch! And why the hell can't I surf the web on a huge HD screen, and have TV in picture-in-picture?!". Really? How damn lazy are we getting? I for one am happy I'm not using dial-up still, and that I have a pocket-sized computer to use high speed Internet on.

Exactly. Why would anyone assume GoogleTV will be a success given their track record with the Nexus One? Competition is good, but GoogleTV at $299 versus $99 for ATV or Roku????

I only haze people that ask unanswerable questions. If something isn't out yet for testing then how would anyone answer you?! Ask me if the next iPhone is hackable... Then ask me if the next PS3 is hackable... The ask me if [insert future product here] is hackable.. If ya can't think critically enough to realize the answer is who the hell would know since they aren't out yet then I worry severally about you.

Apple got owned with this one. I'll be getting one of these and cancelling my Verizon Fios TV service. I literally watch Netflix and a couple of shows. When the Hulu & ESPN app comes to GTV it will be amazing. I think it's priced right as well considering most people pay between $50-$100/month on TV services (more with premium sports channels).
