  • iOS 4.2 Beta 2 and iTunes 10.1 Beta Released to Developers

The newest build of iOS 4.2, 8C5101c, has been released by Apple to it's registered developers, and weighs in at 521MB for our beloved iDevices. Staying on target for the release, it appears that there have been a few additions and tweaks to the latest release.

In particular, the AirPrint features have been detailed a little bit further stating new compatible printer models from the HP Photosmart family, also including a note that iOS 4.2 devices can print directly to printers that have been shared through a Mac or a PC (go figure).

However the notes do state that you will be required to have Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta (available for developers). if your on a Mac or Printer shared through iTunes 10.1 Beta (also available on the iOS developer page) for a PC. So obviously we can expect iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 released along with iOS 4.2.

There has also been a new addition to the way that multitasking presents itself when switching through the apps. The animation has been updated and can be seen in the video below thanks to @macstoriesnet.

The AppStore has finally gained the lovely GameCenter icon, allowing for the same easy browsing we've had on iTunes, indicating which games are compatible with the new Game Center app.

This firmware is of course also compatible with the iPhone (3G, 3GS, 4), iPod Touch (2nd, 3rd, 4th gen) and the iPad. Other than that, keep your eyes peeled for any further updates to whats packed inside the new beta. @ih8sn0w tweeted "iOS 4.2 Beta expires Friday October 29,2010."

As usual, if your not a developer, and want to keep your jailbreak/unlock, DO NOT USE THIS FIRMWARE. Should I remind you to backup your SHSH blobs?

As for iTunes 10.1 not much to report, except some new additions to Ping. Check out screenshots below.

You need iTunes 10.1 beta to install 4.2b2.

Anyone figure out how to use airprint on windows? My phone asks me for a password and username when try to print.

As must as this would have sounded excellent.. this also did not work. I downloaded the iTunes 10.1.0.5 beta for Windows 64bit .. again tried to install the 4.2b2 on an iPhone 4 .. rather than last time getting error "10" .. now I receive error "1013" and exactly the same thing happens.

So conclusion is .. even with iTunes 10.1.0.5 Beta .. still no go.

I beleive I saw elsewhere that PN said 10.0.1 is safe to go to. (Not 100% on that as I have not looked into it much other than skiming and seeing it I think lol.)

Yes indeed, I can confirm that 10.0.1 is safe to go to...both for custom ipsw and restoring...I updated to it from 9 about a week ago.

Looks like Apple is going to do their best to put out new firmwares faster than the dev team can create the jailbreaks. Not looking good for us.

I cannot believe 4.2 is out before a jailbreak.

      This is depressing news!

Iphone 4 without a jialbreak is so lame I should have gotten the Samsung Galaxy.

WOW .. now that was fun. After 2 hours of playing with VMWare Workstation 7.1.2, was able to finally create a MAC OSx 10.6.4 workstation to play around with.

Downloaded the iTunes 10.1 Beta for MAC .. installed, attached iPhone 4, VMWare and OSX picked it up right away .. installed the 4.2b2 on the iDevice successfully.

      Thanks everyone that assisted
