  • iOS 4.2 Beta 2 and iTunes 10.1 Beta Released to Developers

The newest build of iOS 4.2, 8C5101c, has been released by Apple to it's registered developers, and weighs in at 521MB for our beloved iDevices. Staying on target for the release, it appears that there have been a few additions and tweaks to the latest release.

In particular, the AirPrint features have been detailed a little bit further stating new compatible printer models from the HP Photosmart family, also including a note that iOS 4.2 devices can print directly to printers that have been shared through a Mac or a PC (go figure).

However the notes do state that you will be required to have Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta (available for developers). if your on a Mac or Printer shared through iTunes 10.1 Beta (also available on the iOS developer page) for a PC. So obviously we can expect iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 released along with iOS 4.2.

There has also been a new addition to the way that multitasking presents itself when switching through the apps. The animation has been updated and can be seen in the video below thanks to @macstoriesnet.

The AppStore has finally gained the lovely GameCenter icon, allowing for the same easy browsing we've had on iTunes, indicating which games are compatible with the new Game Center app.

This firmware is of course also compatible with the iPhone (3G, 3GS, 4), iPod Touch (2nd, 3rd, 4th gen) and the iPad. Other than that, keep your eyes peeled for any further updates to whats packed inside the new beta. @ih8sn0w tweeted "iOS 4.2 Beta expires Friday October 29,2010."

As usual, if your not a developer, and want to keep your jailbreak/unlock, DO NOT USE THIS FIRMWARE. Should I remind you to backup your SHSH blobs?

As for iTunes 10.1 not much to report, except some new additions to Ping. Check out screenshots below.

If iTunes 10.1 is beta, why did a non-developer like me get an upgrade notice when I started iTunes today?

      EDIT:

The song will have a little tab to open with some stuff for Ping if you select the song or are playing it (Screen shot 2010-09-28 at 7.39.59 PM.png)

Also, the Genius bar now has Ping in it Screen shot 2010-09-28 at 7.42.45 PM.png

Hope this has a fix in it for the wifi cutting off. I have to keep going in and kicking airplane mode on and off in order for the wifi to start working again.

Ditto. It's starting to get very annoying.

I don't experience that bug on my iPhone 4.

That genius bar feature was available in 10.0.1.

The fixed the issue, at least for me, where the mail.app wouldn't work on the "no limit" setting for what emails to sync. All options synced to the specified timeframes except the "no limit" option. Now i've got all my emails once again.

When are they going to fix the fact that the app switcher comes up like you're in portrait all the time? It looks really bad and you can't lock apps into landscape mode.

I'd really appreciate it if someone would post a link for the new iPad beta software. My iPad is registered with a developer and I have it upgraded to the 4.2 beta 1 release but have been anxious for the beta 2 release to get rid of some of the bugs.

Thanks in advance for your assistance...

Do not link to beta firmware. Just letting people know for future posts.

Also I hop they actually make the mute button work in this one too. Already upset a little with the button being switched but at least make it work instead of flashing the mute symbol then not muting.

Yay, safari no longer crashes on my iPad if I start typing something on a page before it finishes loading the whole page.

Hey Paganizonda, can you test the mute button like does it actually work and has the wifi cut out any on you? Those were the only 2 issues I had.

One time the screen randomly stayed on though. Just once. It was on but black.
