  • The Magic Trackpad Finally Debuts

The long-rumored Magic Trackpad peripheral - essentially a MacBook Pro trackpad without the MacBook - has finally been released by Apple, a week after the FCC approved it, almost five months after trademarking the name and nearly a year after the device was first hinted at by Gruber. For all of Apple's renowned secrecy, they sure telegraphed this one.

The Magic Trackpad is a smooth-surfaced standalone trackpad, designed with the same brushed aluminum finish as the Apple Wireless Keyboard. It kicks back at the same angle as the keyboard, too: pretty much begging you to get one as an option with your new iMac or Mac Pro. (Hey, it's only another 70 bucks and you're already paying a couple grand; go for it, big spender!) The same multitouch gestures and taps that work on the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air glass trackpads work on this device: two fingers to secondary-click, scroll, rotate, or pinch-to-zoom, three fingers to page through documents, and so forth.

Significantly, though, Apple says the Magic Trackpad is 80% larger than the Mac Book Pro trackpad, though they don't give actual dimension. If you look at a Wireless Keyboard it will give you some sense of scale. This thing is really as much a small tablet as it is a big trackpad, with interesting implications for Apple's continuing march from the mouse pointer interface to a multitouch model, building on its successes with the iPad and iPhone. Expect more products from Apple that leverage multitouch, including - maybe very soon - iBooks for the desktop.

People who have Apple wireless peripherals know what battery hogs they are, and the complaints were apparently not wasted on Apple, because along with the Magic Trackpad today, they announced the Apple (Magic?) Battery Charger with six batteries, apparently, so you can have two in your keyboard, two in your Magic Whatever, and two charging.

The Magic Trackpad costs a magical $69 US, and ships within 24 hours, as of right now. That may change, so if you want one, you should probably order it quickly.

Using trackpads is typically a lot slower and less efficient than using a mouse....
Gestures! I like that I can use this and the magic mouse. Apple or not I love thr mbp gestures.

I guess I am the first official fence rider on this one. I naturally love using a mouse since that is what we all first learned to use. However, I have learned to love using the track pad on my MBP. It is totally not a "need" but if I got it as a gift from someone (or if somehow I got one for free) I would mos def use it.

      This is awesome.

I've been waiting for something like this.

When I connect my macbook pro to the tv or something I'd like to have something to control it and a mouse isn't always the easiest option, especially in bed. haha.

I am hoping the Apple stores have some to test out. I plan on going there this weekend to try a demo one.

      Possibily getting one.

It will function like a regular mouse but no gesture support; for XP.

I was thinking the same thing...

Then I saw the previous poster saying something about an airmouse app for his iPhone so I downloaded that and cancelled my order! I love the trackpad on my Macbook Pro, but I just saved $70 AND I have one less gadget I need to worry about . There are several to choose from in the App store (I got Air Mouse) and mine works great. I can't wait to try it out next movie night!

I still might buy this later for my iMac... I'm not sure though. As much as I love my MBP trackpad, I sort of enjoy the PC feel of my Logitec MX Revolution when switching over to the iMac. It's one of the only things (along with my Klipsch 4.1 Pro Media speakers) I've kept from my PC days .

It should, it's just a regular mouse. Apple pushed out an update for the driver.

Kinda weird tho... its like Apple knows people aren't quite ready for full touch-screen OSX so they put this out to sort of help people learn so that way in the future they can release a full touch OSX and be like, "Look! You already know how to use this! Its so EASY!"
Exactly if any one hasnt seen it yet Apple has been conditioning and spoon feeding us. Great tactic, it's a nice way of moving everyone to the future and before you realize it we're already there. Thank you Apple

Yes, because enlarging a technology that have existed since the early 90's means Apple cares so much about making their customers future proof... It's just smart marketing on their side that pushes products like these to skyrocket in sales even though they serve no good purpose. And yes, people love that Apple logo on their products.

I'm with everyone else here, just apple trying to drain your wallets. Spend a few extra bucks and get some actual function out of it if you need a track pad: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Touch-Small-Tablet/dp/B002OOWC3S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280332598&sr =8-2"]Wacom Bamboo[/ame]
