  • Apple Releases Compact "Green" Battery Charger

Going right along with the arrival of a new Magic Trackpad and a the refresh of both the iMac and Mac Pro lines, Apple today also rolled out a new environmentally friendly battery charger - a somewhat unexpected product release by the tech giant. Still, as more and more consumers demand greener technologies, Cupertino continues to express a heightened willingness to embrace environmentally-friendly aspects of technology, although it still appears that we're light-years away from the solar powered iPhones that many environmental activists think Apple should be hard at work on as we speak.

According to Apple, now there’s "a better, more environmentally friendly way to power your wireless keyboard, Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, or just about anything that requires AA batteries." The product in question - The Apple Battery Charger kit - is basically a compact charger and six "high-performance" AA NiMH batteries that are reusable - really reusable. Apple claims the batteries are "exceptional at holding a charge" and will last upwards of a decade. The purpose? To break the cycle of buying and disposing "toxic, single-use alkaline batteries."

In addition to the advanced shelf-life of your batteries and the amount of waste they reduce, The Apple Battery Charger has the lowest “vampire draw” of any similar charger on the market - which, according to Apple, is "the energy that most chargers continue to draw even after their batteries are done charging." The kit retails from Apple for $29.00 and ships in 2-4 business days.

Uses less energy than target/walmart ????????

I say - prove your claim Mr Apple! Details ... details ... details ...

You did notice Apple is always LONG in hype, and SHORT on details?

Even without details, Apple is likely sell a billion or so to the fan-boys who believe everything Apple says.

$30 for 6 quality nimh batteries and a green charger is not a bad deal at all. they did not mention the capacity of the batteries though, so i'm curious about that.

yes. you can get rechargeable batteries cheaper, but they'll be 800's or 400's and or even nicad's with their horrible memory effect.

these might be a little pricey but i highly doubt they're low-quality. you get what you pay for.

While I commend Apple for their attempts to be green...I am not paying twice the price for the same product others carry cheaper. Apple has still yet to grasp this concept.

Green? Kind of like the tons of paper, cardboard and plastic that every Apple retail store wastes by not having a recycle bucket? Got it Apple? You talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

Most battery chargers nowadays actually stop drawing power as to not decrease the life of the battery by having a constant charge going into it even when full. So how is drawing a little power better than drawing no power at all Apple?
Are you implying that Apple makes everything? Open up a MacBook, you'll be surprised what you find.

that's not a bad price considering it comes with 6 AA rechargeable batteries that have a reported 10 yr lifespan. And as for their devices that use AA's, the magic mouse & the wireless keyboard use batteries.

No I'm not and I don't see how my comment implies anything
But Sulfer's post made it sound that enegizer is made by target.

Guide to making a green product:
      1. Make a product that was made in the 90s (has anyone ever owned a gameboy advance charger?)
      2. Put a logo on it
      3. Put the word "green" in front of it's name

Congratulations you now have a "green" product.

EDIT: I'm sorry they didn't even put a logo on it...

Before we make conclusions about the product release, I would think that it will be healthy to do some tests/benchmarks and compare them with other similar products.

If at the end, it is just a rebranded NiMh battery... that would look like an epic fail from Apple.

Saying that, I hope that the batteries provide something that is not currently on the market. I am curious about the reasoning on releasing this type of product so unusual from Apple.

Apple is not going to grasp this concept so that you'll buy there products. They don't even need to because they will still continue to sell their products with the same concept they have been using.

The batteries dont look like they are labeled. No specs on charging cycles or mah so for all we know they could be cheap rechargeable batteries and fanboys would still buy it. Do some searching if you want good batteries. i love my eneloops and been using the same ones for years. you can get an eneloop charger which has 4 slots for both AA and AAA and comes with 4 AA batteries for under $20. You then have $10 more dollars to spend if you need AAA batteries. please correct me if im wrong so the average is 3 milliwatts which is 0.003 watts and hour? to waste 1 watt you would have to keep it on standby for 333 hours?

Maybe I'm just nuts, but why six batteries, but it can only charge two at a time? If this thing actually worked as promised I'd pick one up for my Xbox360 controller, since I don't own anything from Apple with user replaceable batteries (hint hint, nudge nudge).

Seriously, at least let me charge four at once, that way I can use two and keep the others ready to go. One guy said his bluetooth keyboard used 3 batteries... this would be perfect for it him. 3 in and 3 charging. Wait, that's right, he can only charge two at a time. How's he going to juggle that one?
