  • How to Jailbreak your 8.x iOS Device with Pangu

    {last updated November 10th, 2014}

This Windows and OS X guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using Pangu for 8.x. The current version of Pangu for 8.x is 1.2.1. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following devices on 8.0, 8.0.1, 8.0.2, and 8.1 (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):

    • iPod touch 5g
    • iPhone 4s
    • iPhone 5
    • iPhone 5s
    • iPhone 5c
    • iPhone 6
    • iPhone 6 Plus
    • iPad Mini with retina display
    • iPad Mini 3
    • iPad Air
    • iPad Air 2

NOTE: Before running the Pangu jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iTunes and restore to 8.1. If you've restored over the air (through Settings instead of iTunes), Pangu will most likely fail. You'll want to restore through iTunes to 8.1 and then run this process.

REPEAT: If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 8.1 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 8.1 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 8.1 and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of Pangu for Windows (it is not yet ready for OS X). You can do so on pangu.io or from our mirror:

    Windows Pangu 1.2.1 at mod.my/pangu8win121.
    OS X Pangu 1.0.0 at mod.my/pangu8osx100.

Pangu needs your iDevice to have Touch ID OFF and Find my iPhone OFF. You can turn them back on after the jailbreak. Please disable them now. This is done in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > turn off the top three green sliders, and Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone > Turn off the top green slider. Your jailbreak WILL FAIL if you do not do these steps before jailbreaking.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click the Pangu icon to launch it. You may be prompted to allow an application for a new developer - click Open.

You will see the Pangu home screen, and Pangu should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the blue button to begin. Pangu will note a few steps to make sure you've completed - make sure you've backed up, put your phone in airplane mode (Settings > General > Airplane mode slider on to orange). They also recommend you jailbreak on a fresh restore, THEN restore your backup.

Hit "Already Did" to to start the jailbreak if you've completed those steps.

Pangu will then go through many status messages while it jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

At the end of this process, the iDevice will restart.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

The instructions are calling for OpenSSH to be installed, not OpenSSL

I need to report that it does not work. I just updated my iPad 4 (Wifi + AT&T 4G 64 GIG) to 8.1 and downloaded the program. I plugged the iPad into my PC and launched the program. At first, the progress bar went a little, then the program stopped and the button became blue again. I then read the instructions carefully and turned find my iPhone off. The iCloud English text on the jailbreak program disappeared, but other English text read "Touch ID," presumably indicating that touch ID was on, contrary to the instructions. The problem is that the iPad4 does not have hardware for touch ID. I tried again to jailbreak by clicking the blue button (both times I unchecked the left option to install the pirating crap. This time the progress bar went farther and I saw some other percentage bars move, but the program again stopped, this time with the mail progress bar around 40% finished.

Oh my goodness I just spent 15 minutes installing itunes onto a windows 7 box. Is this what windows users have to put up with on a daily basis? Hoping this is the most painful part of the jailbreak.

It's still buggy. I was having problems getting it to work after my iPhone was stuck on the boot logo after a restart.

It worked fine the first time I jailbroke, but after trying to do it again, it just wasn't working.

I'm on a MBP running Windows 8.1 thru Parallels. I noticed that while on battery power, Windows goes into some kind of power saving mode, once I plugged my Mac to power, Pangu started working again flawlessly. Something in Windows power saving mode was preventing Pangu from working for some reason.

Yeah, Windows 8 and 7 suck. I might have to use Windows Vista or XP next time I need to use it in a VM. And people complain about the changes with Yosemite.

If you think 7 sucks don't even look at vista. It makes all your windows nightmares look like the best things to ever happen. 10 looks like it has some potential, though.

I just highly dislike the whole "Metro" look or whatever they call it and since I don't use it, I'm not gonna bother with setting it up with the "classic" look. A Mac version of Pangu will come along that I won't need to keep using Windows in VM.

We cheapos still have to use a PC though, so 10 will be a vast improvement over 8.

So there are only 3 options in the pangu app, OpenSSH and two other. When I try to install the OpenSSH it gives me that error that was depicted in the screen shot. It appears OpenSSH is trying to install OpenSSL and fails.

But thanks for the help, instead of nit picking my post.

I just ended up reloading my phone from a fresh ISPW
