  • "Get a Mac" Guy is a Jailbreaker

I'm not sure how Apple is going to feel about this.

As it turns out, Justin Long, star of the popular "Get a Mac" TV spots from Apple, is among us. That is, he's in our "community," if you catch my drift. And while Justin's former bosses in Cupertino may not be thrilled with this revelation, Justin Long obviously isn't just playing a contemporary, cutting edge tech guy on TV. In real life, he's exactly that. And then some.

During an appearance this week on late night TV's "Jimmy Kimmel Live", Long shared a story on the program that involved a personal demonstration (iPhone and all) of a humorous SMS convo that, ultimately, revealed more - much more - than just the funny comments in the chat. During the segment (check out the video above), it was apparent that Long has a jailbroken iPhone (gasp!) as Cydia was clearly among his visible iPhone apps.

One has to wonder if Apple would have to terminate Long's contract as a result of his "devious" jailbreaking activities - assuming, of course, that the company hadn't already pulled the plug on the "Get a Mac" TV spots. Nonetheless, it appears that the star of "Live Free or Die Hard" wants his iPhone to live as freely as possible. And its a really cool nod to the jailbreak community to see that one of Apple's most public faces is actually... one of us

He's jb'n. I think the producers could have a found a way to display his phone without installing tvout. And his phone seems boring. no folders, no there are aux output cables you buy to connect your iDevice to a tv. If you really want to analyze his phone look at all the icon placements. No folders? No wallpaper? only msg in dock? You can't even tell if he's on iOS4. Plus cydia has a badge. He has apps to update. wallpaper, one icondock. you cant even tell if he's on iOS4. It is odd there is no WB, so who knows. I'm sure there will be more story to follow. I watched this last night too, I'm not sure how I missed it. I usually catch things like this.

As much as we all wish he was a jailbreaker, it is likely that he isn't. That or this particular phone was jailbroken for this episode just for the TVout app on Cydia. The reasons are: if you notice at the bottom they only have "messages" in the dock so that it is quicker to access when this segment came up. Also, Cydia, and TVout are on the very last page as evidenced by the page dots at the bottom being on the last dot. So they probably just jailbroke it for this segment as those are the 2 most recently installed programs if it holds true about new programs being added to the last page created.

He most likely is on iOS4 because in the new jailbreak procedure it installs Cydia but not WinterBoard. You have to install Winterboard manually on iOS4 if I remember correctly. When I jailbroke my 3GS with JailbreakMe it didn't install Winterboard. I also jailbroke my 3G on iOS4 the PwnageTool way and it didn't install Winterboard either.

Don't you need to JB for proper TV output (Resupported)? Their tech guys could have just as easily had him load a backup onto one of their JB'd phones. After all, it was clearly set up for this and, IIRC, jailbreaking is a requirement... short of having a prototype and rig like Jobs has at WWDC and his other presentations.

Ok winterboard doesn't come installed with the jailbreak at least since 3.1.2 so your comment is voided.

If you ever get a dog that can jailbreak an iPhone please record it and upload it, then post it on modmyi LOL...

As for the arguments about whether or not he's on iOS4. He has the dock from 3.x days so I'm guess not.
