  • iOS Update Imminent? Back Up Your SHSH Blobs Anyway...

[UPDATE: the rumors were right and iOS 4.0.2/3.2.2 are out there. Jailbreakers DO NOT UPGRADE.]

Unsubstantiated rumors are flying around the interwebs about iOS 4.0.2 and iOS 3.2.2 updates to be released within hours that will close the PDF hole and root escalation bug that made jailbreakMe possible. No idea if it's true, but we know that Apple claims to have an upgrade in the pipeline, and no less of a personage than the Dev-Team's @cpich3g hints that it's about to drop, so better safe than sorry.

Obviously, if you're prompted to update firmware, don't do it. But to avoid any possibility of losing your jailbreak and apps, back up your SHSH blobs now if you haven't already done so, before the saving window closes.

I read somewhere that apple was signing 4.0.1 last night still so you try to see what happens

[Hi all, n00b here. First post.]

      I think - I hope? - you're right.

I ordered an iPhone 4 last week and it arrived a couple of days ago. Put it in Recovery Mode and found out it has 4.0.1 on it. So far so good.

Because I have a lot of apps/Cydia apps/under-the-hood stuff/[k]'ed stuff on my present iPhone 3G, I need to be very careful with this transition. Also I don't have my case yet either, so I thought I'd wait 'til everything was all lined up in a row before activating/jailbreaking/unlocking the new iPhone 4.

Last night I got in a panic after seeing the 4.0.2 announcements as I knew Apple would stop signing 4.0.1 SHSHs soon. So here I am this morning with the still-unactivated phone, trying to save the things using Umbrella on my Mac.

Using the Advanced Options I was able to save iPhone 4.0.1 SHSHs for iPhone 4 from Cydia first. Then I thought I'd try it with Apple, figuring nah ... this won't work. Much to my surprise, a little while later I got a "Success!" message back from Umbrella!

I checked and the file sizes are slightly different:

      70198 Aug 13 10:07 [ECID elided]-iphone4-4.0.1.shsh.apple
      60953 Aug 13 09:54 [ECID elided]-iphone4-4.0.1.shsh.cydia

Hopefully these will (both?) be good in case I ever need 'em.

I then decided to track down the 4.0.1 ipsw file just in case. Managed to find a Google Cache'd site with the direct link to the Apple download server. Thought surely it would 404 on me after the 4.0.2 release but it didn't! So now I have

      579M Aug 13 10:57 iPhone3,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw

      Hoping that's good/correct (607,380,127 bytes)?

Looks like with luck I'm all set now? Phew!

Just purchased my iPhone 4 at an AT&T store about an hour ago. JB'd it on the spot, put in a TSS request through Cydia. Got it home a few minutes ago, started up TinyUmbrella, and requested blobs for 4.0.1, and GOT 'EM!

^^ Oh, that is possible good news for me then. After JBing my phones I did hit "Make my life easier" around mindnight MST but all I saw after that was that I had a pending TSS request. Hopefully it goes through after all. That would be so cool to be able to honk St. eve and (cr)apple off one more time by haveing my blobs saved!

Thanks to all of you who wrote back.

I just got thinking some more. Aren't the "overlords" at (cr)apple going to get a little suspicious when they see all of these TSS requests coming in at the last second right after 4.0.2 is released? They should probably figure out that people are racing to save their blobs.

My phone was shipped out last night from china, since its coming directly from there I can only assume it already has 4.0.2 on it... I need to do an upgrade swap on it anyway so I was planning on trying to cut my sim from my 3GS and stick it right into the phone, in hopes that it might have 4.0.1 and I could maybe JB it. It should be delivered on the 18th.... is there any hope or am I screwed?

Can you say what kind of hassle it was to swap the numbers? (I'm ready to do so myself, transitioning from a 3G -> 4)

I'm guessing that Apple is still signing 4.0.1 because there are people out there who are still getting phones delivered with 4.0.1 and people like you are the first of the people to get 4.0.2 pre-installed. I still suspect that they'll stop signing 4.0.1 pretty soon once they know that every phone leaving the factory has 4.0.2 on it.

I missed the part about being a hassle to swap the numbers!

I ordered my Iphone 4 from Apple as AT&T's server had the meltdown!

When I got my phone from Apple by Fedex I powered on the phone and it was at the emergency call with connect to Itunes in the back ground!

I connected the iphone to my computer and don't really remember what options if any but when itunes started activating the iphone 4 I did nothing! When it was finished my phone was activated!

At no time did I input any information but when it was done it was activated and ready to go!

So I also am curious as what the problems were!

When I did my 3gs when I bought it the lady ask for the sim from my old phone and I did and she put it into my 3gs iphone and few minutes later, very few, the phone was ready to go and that was from AT&T store!

W00T! I don't know if anybody else will read this older thread, but I've got good news to report. When I checked early Friday morning Cydia still said my request was pending but after waiting until Saturday afternoon, Cydia magically says my 4.0.1 blobs are saved. I'll have to take back half the mean things I've said about crapple. Either by accident or someone there was actually nice for once and kept signing things for at least 36 hours after 4.0.2 was released. Bring on Unrestrictor, MyFi, and Frash!

it was only a hassle because i used the upgrade from another number on my family plan, if you are using your own upgrade it will be painless setup via itunes.
