  • MMi Weekly Jailbreak App Store Update: August 9th, 2010
After some hiatus, the weekly jailbreak app store updates segment is back. I will be covering some new apps that have recently been added to the Cydia and Rock app stores in the past few weeks, some of the best free apps available today, and some of the worst. There is a lot to cover so if I missed something please feel free to add to this. We want to hear the community's thoughts on these apps. This week I'll be covering Signal, My3G, MyWi, Cicero, and a few others.

    New & Updated Apps:

    Signal

Recently Paul discussed Signal, a new App available in Cydia, created by planetbeing. Planetbeing is the person behind the Unlock we have at the moment, and with the development of this new app, Signal, provides vital information about what your baseband is doing, which towers it is connecting to, and various data points.

Signal uses your current location, and pinpoints where the nearest cell tower is using a google maps overlay. Your connected tower station is shown as a red dot, as real time signal strength is shown in dBm. Read More...

While this app may not appeal to everyone, the gesture of purchasing this app and supporting planetbeing's work is what brings it in as one of the most important apps every jailbreaker should have in their collection. Head over to Cydia and purchase Signal for $4.99.

    My3G with FaceTime Support

If you've never heard of My3G, you've been living under a rock. My3G has the ability to convince your Apps that they are actually on WiFi rather than 3G. Doing this extends the limits of what you can do while away from WiFi. Things such as FaceTime require WiFi to function, due to the high use of bandwidth for each call. Even apps like YouTube will disable the ability to watch HD movies if you have no WiFi signal. With My3G, you can watch HiDef YouTube videos, use Factime, Skype/Fring and other apps over the 3G network, no questions asked.

You can download My3G via RockApp for only $3.99.

    MyWi 4.0

Possibly one of the most interesting, useful apps available on a Jailbroken iDevice. From the creators of My3G, comes MyWi. MyWi has been rebuilt from scratch to bring tethering support to iOS 4! MyWi will allow you to create a WiFi HotSpot in a matter of seconds, straight from your iDevice. Essentially your iDevice will become an Access Point for other WiFi enabled devices to connect to, and share the 3G or WiFi connection that the iDevice has. This is great for roadtrips or mobile meetings. Or heck, even a LAN tournament.

This app will work with all jailbroken iPhones (including 2G/3G/3GS/4) and iPad on 3.1.2 or later. You can download MyWi via RockApp for $19.99.

More information can be found here.

    InfiniFolders & Infinidock

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlrOOpPeoVE[/ame]

From Xuzz chpwn comes InfiniDock and InfiniFolders, now both iOS 4 compatible. InfiniFolders will allow you to overload your folders originally limited to 12 by default on iOS 4. This creates a great way to really organize your apps and manage them efficiently. InfiniFolders is available for $1.99 from Cydia via BigBoss repo

InfiniDock is much the same, in that it allows you to add as many icons to the dock as you'd like, and appears much like the multi-tasking feature on iOS 4. Slide to the left or right to reveal more icons in the dock.

    Cicero

Cicero is not so much an app, as it is an extension, and a useful one at that. Cicero will allow the user to add and manage search engines directly inside of the Safari browser. Built inside of Cicero is an OpenSearch-compliant search engine manager which makes it incredibly easy to add search engines from the database of search engines provided by Mycroft.

Cicero also manages search suggestions displaying suggested queries as you type for faster results. By tapping on the current engine’s icon, you'll be able to switch through providers, just like you would in something like firefox.

Cicero is available in Cydia via BigBoss repository for $2.49

    Quick Updates:

The following apps have been updated to work with iOS 4. Not much more to say other than that. For the most part, you will probably all have these updates installed already. These are in no particular order. For a full list go here

    tlert
    iLock
    LockInfo
    SBSettings
    iBlacklist
    SBSchedule
    BiteSMS
    IconSupport

    Five-Column Springboard
    Five-Icon Dock

I'd like to use Infinidock but when I install it - all of my apps get thrown out of their folders and it puts 1-4 apps per page. It would take way too long to sort through that mess...

I tried this method (I have the same as you do on my plan) and got a message saying I have to activate Tethering through AT&T to use the mobile hotspot.

Used 7.2 gigs last month and 6.5 the month before with the old unlimited plan and no extra charges for me. (About 1/2 of the data usage was while on mywi)

      3G Unrestrictor FTW!

I'm sick of Rock. I wish they would make a cydia accessible version of MyWi 4. I have no other need for rock once I've purchased MyWi so I have to purchase MyWi legitimately and then go back and install a ****** version of it just so that I can get rock off of my phone. Thankfully though chpwn mentioned that there will be a mywi competitor coming to Cydia relatively soon!

I have found that SBSchedule actually uses more battery power than the function you turn off with it , it is completely f#%^ed to be honest. I also seem to have some invisible schedule I can't remove as well, it's firing off a sched 12 minutes before it's supposed to.

It tells your iDevice that your on WiFi when your on 3G.. meaning any apps (such as the app store restricting large size applications or face time on the iPhone 4) can be done over 3G

It is no secret that I am no fan of Rock but I can't be the only one that finds it strange that My3G - which fails with Facetime on the iPhone 4, gets a full review while 3GUnrestrictor which is available in Cydia and was around before My3G barely gets a mention.

Do Rock actually sponsor Modmyi? If not, why is MMi promoting their products over existing ones that work better?

I don't believe I am letting my dislike of Rock cloud my judgement but I do find this very strange - is there an explanation I am missing?

@confucious I agree 100%. I have found Rock unstable as well and don't have it on my iPhone 4. While My3G may be fine, 3G Unrestrictor works smoothly for me and has been fine the few times I've used it with Facetime as well.

That said, MyWi is an incredibly sweet and useful app.

That is incorrect. The original $30.00 iPhone data plan is unlimited and has no 5GB or 2GB limit. This is the reason is pushing hard to get those users on the new $25.00 2GB plan.

Ha ha that's good! Usually there is fine print that I never read and unlimited never means unlimited. Lol but maybe AT&T isn't as bad as we thought. I can't believe some of you guys are hitting 6 or 7 gigs a month. Sheeesh. I hit 9 gigs on my gs for the whole year last year

I purchased 3g Unrestrictor on my 3gs and then it did not work on my iphone4 in the beginning, so I purchased my3g. 3g unrestrictor made a much more quiet comeback about thier facetime support. As someone that owns both I will say they both seem to work well...I havent had the 1 minute bug with facetime over 3g. I am also no fan of rock but alot of times first to market wins temporarily until better software arrives...as a user of miwi also I will wait until there is a cydia option for that so I can remove rock completely.

As far as the question about your unlimited data plan. There is a "soft" limit of 6gb, meaning that if you go over it occasionally they will just ignore it. But I tend to run about 5-10gb a month and have never had an issue.

There is fine print, and the unlimited plan is in fact limited to 5 GB. AT&T doesn't really enforce that limit, but there is indeed a limit as defined in the PLAN TERMS - Wireless from AT&T. Just because AT&T doesn't enforce it now doesn't mean they won't in the future.
