  • Much Ado About iDisk Streaming

There's been a fair amount of digital ink spilled today about the "discovery" of a feature Apple openly released last month: the ability to stream your music files from your MobileMe iDisk in the background, just like Pandora and Rhapsody do. Though even Michael Robertson, the former MP3.com honcho who wrote about the feature clearly states that this is not the long-rumored "iTunes in the cloud," that hasn't stopped folks from saying it's just that.

Robertson said he found the feature "buried in the release notes of an iPhone app," though it's the 4th item in the 'What's New' list for MobileMe iDisk, so maybe the discovery is not quite the same as finding pirate treasure. However, he does clearly highlight the most significant and interesting part of this development that relates to any future cloud-based iTunes service. The world's largest music company, Universal Music Group (UMG), has been telling streaming music services that they must get a license and pay them every time the play music from any of the approximately 4,750.226,453 artists under contract to a UMG label. If Apple can get away with this, then they may be able to get away with true iTunes streaming. If not… well this is just the first shot in a long battle.

One upside of this for jailbreakers is that streaming from Dropbox also works just as well. Someone could put together a front-end app to manage music collections on Dropbox or any file sharing app, and put in support for a song browser, playlists, genres, cover art… in short, all the bells and whistles that people are used to from iTunes, and use My3G to get around the 20MB limitation. In other words: we don't need to wait for Apple.

You can already stream your entire music collection to your iPhone using Ben Baron's iSub app in the App store. You also need to install Subsonic server to your home pc and with some minor configuration you'll be rocking to your tunes in no time.

      Subsonic » Free Music Streamer

No worry about 3G unrestrictor or My3G. Not needed! You do however need to register the Subsonic server API that will quit working after 30 days. It costs roughly $12US (smallest donation you make for it). Ben's iSub app costs $4.99 in App store. I'm a beta tester. He's improving it and fixing bugs all the time. iSub now caches the songs streamed, so you can play music again from internal storage off your phone for when network is not available.

Just thought I would mention this perfectly legit music streamer available right now. Why pay Apple $99 or Amazon $45 when you can pay $17 ONCE and be done with it?

I know there are somewhat comparable alternatives, but I like what it provides and it's worth it to me.
4 iDevices? What 4 devices? I can assume an iPhone and iPad, but the iPhone negates the need for an iPod, so perhaps a nano or shuffle for excercise. Either way, I'm left with 3 at most. Explain!

I still don't get it, why would we want cloud streaming? Wouldn't that keep us from using our content when signal is not available?? Wouldn't this man our content would have to buffer and stuff? Please someone explain why anyone would like this?

i would pay the $99 if Apple let my iDisk reside on my time capsule. they should let "ME" provide the could to myself.... its dumb if i have to store my data twice. once at home and once on an Apple server.

Same reason most companies do. It's called profit. Microsoft exchange also costs as well as most server based personnel email domains.

Not only that, in Apple's specifications it says that you must be on OS 3.1.3 or higher.
