  • MiTube Allows Non-Jailbroken iPhones to Stream, Download from YouTube

This one clearly falls under the banner of "get it while you still can."

MiTube is now available through iTunes. What's MiTube, you ask? It's a sweet new app that lets you stream and download videos right from YouTube. Of course, the jailbreak community is already well versed and familiar with MxTube on Cydia, which, for the most part, does what MiTube now does for non-jailbroken handsets.

As with other apps that have surprisingly made it to the App Store, it isn't clear how long MiTube will be permitted to exist on hallowed Apple ground. But if you scoop it up now, you can enjoy some pretty nifty features, chief of among them is the ability to download MP4s of YouTube flicks and save them directly to your iOS device.

Free from Max Weisel, the app is and compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It does, however, require iPhone OS 3.0 or later. Get it here.

Update: The app has been pulled from the Appstore.

I just got it, but how did this slip by Apple? This is a replacement for the Youtube app and Apple says you cant replace their apps. And is it even legal to download off of youtube?

Exactly what SDK rule does this break? Let me guess, the "duplicate fuctionality" rule? I swear apple needs a kick in the teeth for that rule.

My hope is that they're finally starting to abandon that rule, like when they allowed third party browsers into the app store. And YouTube is not illegal. It's got a reputation for being a pirate site, and some retarded RIAA executives would have you believe that it is, but trust me if it wasn't legal it wouldn't have lasted this long.

Cone to think of it, with the right lawyer, you could build a good case against apple in an anticompetition lawsuit over that rule.
No wonder YouTube had to release their new app as a web app...

Only problem is you cant let the app fall asleep or your download stops. Got to keep the phone active and not quit out of the app. If it worked in the background would be great!!!!!!

Why is everyone saying this? iWoopie and others have existed on the official App Store with this functionality for ages.

I don't know about MXtube, but Youtube.app uses the native iPod video player to play vids, so all you need to do, at least in IOS 3 is set double-tap home to iPod via activator (I'm fairly sure there's a native method too) and use it to re-enable playback after you leave the app.

I really hope Apple keeps this in the App Store. It may finally be the day when Apple isn't a complete app-hole when it comes to their restrictions.
