  • iPhone 4 Cracks Emerge
Apple compares the iPhone 4 glass to a helicopter windshield, and say its 30 times harder than plastic and less prone to breakage.

On its website, Apple talks up the "aluminosilicate glass" used in the iPhone 4, which it says is the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains.

"Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever," Apple says.

A Sydney iPhone repair shop has seen different after the first broken model came through their door.

According to the Sydney repair shop, one must be careful not to drop their iPhone 4 because the cost to repair the glass is significantly higher than the 3G[S]. (I feel no matter what iPhone one owns one must be careful not to drop)

The young gentlemen that dropped his phone off at the Sydney repair shop states that it will cost $199.00 to repair and states that he feels the iPhone 4 was just as, if not more fragile as the previous models. For the 3G and 3Gs models a screen repair was around $129.00

Remember - Apple does not cover it if you drop it. The phone slipped out of his hands because he was carrying too many things. He also provided photos showing the damage on dropped iPhone 4 models follows a similar pattern of previous versions.

EDIT: The gentlemen stated "I kind of regret not putting the cover on straight away but I didn't think it would shatter like that, I just thought it would be a small scratch," he said.

"It's not even as durable as a BlackBerry - I drop the BlackBerry all the time but i've never seen something that's shattered this quick."

I bought my iPhone 4 Saturday morning and went to my local Best Buy and bought an ifrogz case....even got 10$ off the price since it was a launch special!

Did he really compare it to a blackberry screen? those screen are smaller than the iphone's and its plastic not glass. But its weird cuz the plastic screens on most phones are actually more durable than the iphones glass. My friend always drops his phone but the screen just gets small scratches while people with iphones just drop it once and get huge spiderweb cracks?!

What people don't understand is Glass has two properties : Resistance to scratch and Pretty much flexibility.

In a perfect world, you would have both of them.

Apple made a choice to go the Scratch resistant Way.

Its really resistant to scratch but can't Handle SHOCKS really well.

Thats what people don't understand. Apple just played with the words as always.

Scratch Resistant does not mean Shock Resistant

      Lets do one thing!

      Compare to an equal!

You can purchase one of those $10 or $15 dollar or a little more cases and your protection is NOWHERE compaired to the OtterBox Defender!

Yes it is bulky and yes it does not look as good as the Iphone 4 naked!

I have been lucky as the only time I have dropped my Iphone 3gs without an Otterbox has been on carpet or in the soft grass in the yard! Was lucky it was not on concrete or rocks!

I purchased an Otterbox for my 3gs and has served me well and I am glad I did purchase it!

I now have an Iphone 4 and it doesn't feel secure when I am holding it naked not near as much as my 3gs!

I have and OtterBox for my iphone 4 on order and just can't wait till I get it and feel so much safer!

Not all people have office jobs!

Its just like a motorcycle helment, do you want the $25 dollar one or the $200 dollar one knowing the chance of an accident is great! Yea the $25 dollar one is thin and light and looks cooler but if you think no more of yourself then buy the $25 dollar one or better yet do the cool macho thing and just were a bandani!

I have seen at least 8 iphone 4 on sale on Craigslist in my area with broke glass!

Of all the others you will see 3 or 4 and there are a lot more 3g and 3gs out there!

Pay now or Pay later the choice is yours!

Helicopter glass is not several inches thick...not like it changed the point of the post, but just to be a stickler about accuracy here. Have a nice day and sorry for those who have chattered glass. Guess the case is necessary, huh?

and iPod Touchs! I have a Griffin 2G case (even though I have a ipt3). Didn't read label at Walmart, thought it was 3G. Oh well, the ipod might be as thick as a iph3, but the thicker, the more protection! I haven't dropped miTouch yet, but gives me a safe feeling. Pkus its blue and stylish :-)

I dropped my naked iPhone on the second day I had it in a parking lot. Thing is, it fell right on to the toe of my shoe and never touched pavement! It was like a gift from the iPhone gods. Now I have an Otterbox Defender and I'll Nolan Ryan this thing at a wall while laughing like a madman and not think twice about it. Cuz I'm just wild like that, ya know? NO, YOU DON'T.

I have the defender on mine. I used to have one on my 3G. That phone flew down a set of concrete stairs with no issues (my 3G). I dunno maybe I'm more paranoid but the iPhone 4 defender case feels nice but it doesn't seem as solid as the one on my 3G. I was watching videos of the ballistic case. Man that things a beast. Has anyone ever drop tested the iPhone 4 defender case yet on a review? I'm curious how well the new defender holds up.

I put one on mine and threw it across a room to show a customer how secure the phone is. Didn't do a thing to my phone and the customer bought the case from me

Don't know who that was towards but some people aren't upgrade eligible so that means instead of a phone being 2-3 hundred it 6-7 hundred

I used the otterbox when I was in Afganistan. That thing is perfect. Even kept out most of the "moon" dust. I don't use it normally but if you are going to play rough then this thing will protect it.

I dropped my iPhone 4 while putting it into my cargo pocket, so it only fell about 2 feet...and I had a full ifrogz case and invisibleSHIELD screen protector on it and it still shattered. The invisibleSHIELD kept all the tiny shards of glass together and the screen was still usable until I got it to an apple store the next morning.

I give the guy at the apple store a lotof credit and thank him because it was the first cracked screen he had seen on the new iPhone 4 and I only had it for about a week so he just gave me a brand new iPhone 4

the iphone 4 otterbox fits in the pocket better than the 3GS one but i keep mine on my belt. if first i didn't like the clip for the iphone 4 otterbox but its grown on me cause it doesn't come off accidentally as much.
