  • iPhone 4 Cracks Emerge
Apple compares the iPhone 4 glass to a helicopter windshield, and say its 30 times harder than plastic and less prone to breakage.

On its website, Apple talks up the "aluminosilicate glass" used in the iPhone 4, which it says is the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains.

"Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever," Apple says.

A Sydney iPhone repair shop has seen different after the first broken model came through their door.

According to the Sydney repair shop, one must be careful not to drop their iPhone 4 because the cost to repair the glass is significantly higher than the 3G[S]. (I feel no matter what iPhone one owns one must be careful not to drop)

The young gentlemen that dropped his phone off at the Sydney repair shop states that it will cost $199.00 to repair and states that he feels the iPhone 4 was just as, if not more fragile as the previous models. For the 3G and 3Gs models a screen repair was around $129.00

Remember - Apple does not cover it if you drop it. The phone slipped out of his hands because he was carrying too many things. He also provided photos showing the damage on dropped iPhone 4 models follows a similar pattern of previous versions.

EDIT: The gentlemen stated "I kind of regret not putting the cover on straight away but I didn't think it would shatter like that, I just thought it would be a small scratch," he said.

"It's not even as durable as a BlackBerry - I drop the BlackBerry all the time but i've never seen something that's shattered this quick."

I've had a 3G, my girlfriends had a 3GS, both of us have dropped ours a number of time - worse thing thats happened. A few scratched which I can live with.

So why not get a case...well Apple go on about this being sooo tough etc then why would I need one. Also whats the point of having a really nicely designed phone if you then go and shove an ulgy case round it (I'm yet to see a case that does not make it look like a any other medioka phone)

Yes the odd one will smash but this phone is IMO MUCH MUCH MUCH more likely to smash the front or back than any other iphone.

I would much rather apple released a plastic back panel than a glass one.

Oh and I have dropped my Thinkpad tooo many times than i can remember onto Laminate...whats the damage....a ding to the laminate

Everyone's all like "Well, duh, buy a case..." Apple should be taking care of this, too.

I was doing some looking around on cases to protect these "investments" On my 3gS I have the otter box case, being in the military we are always breaking phones. If you dont like the Otterbox case ive found a case on the internet ( have not tried it out yet due to me being deployed in afghanistan so if anybody has tried it please let me know how durable it is it is called the vapor case it looks to have a sturdy but not bulky build to it. I found it on ElementCASE. I have also found if you get renters insurance through your bank or insurance provider you can claim your Iphone on your policy just either take a pic with it or a receipt proving you bought it. Ive used this before when somebody spilled soda on my 3gS and I was able to get it replaced through my insurance. Hope this helps a little bit.

Maybe they're stronger when being bent but a hit at the right angle and you have a nice crap.

WHAT HE SAID! That's how I think. But in that case you should try skins like invisibleshield or BSE. I've had them on my previous phones back(since I knew the screen was resistant unless you use an icepick to scratch it) but the only problem is that they start to peel off after a while and dirt gets in and your phone looks like ****. And putting this on my yet to receive iPhone 4 would make it thicker so I'm gonna trust the scratchless glass back and front and myself lol.

If everyone should put a case on it, Apple might as well spend less money on the design of the phone and make them cheaper to purchase.

You don't go buying a beautiful car, just to wrap it in plastic and foam so it won't get dents/scratches? What's the point of having a great-looking phone if you hide its looks in a case.

      just my 2 cents..

Cars are FAR more durable and resistant than phones, so that's not really a good comparison. Cars are designed to endure rain, snow, ice, dust etc., not many phones will take those conditions and still work. For those that like to go naked, there are some very minimal cases, protectors, etc. out there for the iPhone 4 by the way, some are so thin and clear you can't tell there is anything on the phone.

Side Note- even though the glass is "gorilla glass", it is extremely thin! It does not matter how tough glass is, if it is thin, it will break. The difference with helicopter glass is that is several inches thick
im a UH-60 Blackhawk crew chief helicopter glass is not several inches thick, it may be a 1/4 of an inch max. but jet liners have glass thats 1.5 inches thick to have the strength to handle the pressure of the speed they go also they glass aircraft use is laminated many layers glued together to make it stronger

My mother dropped mine when I first bought fortunately it did not crack but I did see how the smallest thing would scratch it.

Looks like he was just unlucky enough to catch the drop right on the corner. I have dropped mine forgetting it was in my lap or having it slip out of my pocket onto my hard wood floor. No cracks or scratches. You luck depends on the angle of the fall.

Do you know anything about how the iPhone 4 Is made??. Yes the Digitizer Glass ONLY is about $65.00 but the LCD is NOT included with glass digitizer and is adhered (glued) to the old glass that is broken. You will be VERY lucky if you are able to separate the LCD from the old glass to the new glass with out damaging the LCD. Why not just get the Glass digitizer and LCD that are together already?? They run between $130-$160. I found this one on Ebay...IPHONE 4 4TH DIGITIZER TOUCH SCREEN & LCD ASSEMBLY OEM - eBay (item 320566891922 end time Aug-24-10 20:24:43 PDT)

Coming from a guy who has repaired hundreds of iPhone devices and about 6 iPhone 4's...I'm just sayin..it might be easier on you if you are not an expereinced repair tech.

My USAA insurance covers everything that could happen to my phone including drops and it being submerged. Cool thing is it's covered under my extra computer coverage for my MacBook and it costs me something like 25 bucks a year. I also have a speck case that snaps together and it's fit and finish is awesome. Really like it. It amazes me that people will spend 2-300 bucks on a glass phone and not put a case on it at all, I have a case and a clear protector for the front and back. Though I do only use the case at work, not at hone or running around.

Are iPhone 4s on eBay for a decent price? Might have to upgrade the parents!

I totally agree with you! I own a cell phone repair shop here in ATX and a lot of people don't realize the iPhone 4 Glass digitizer and LCD went back to the way it was on the Original 2G iPhone and that they are fused together. I have not done as many as your shop has but the ones I have done say the same thing..."I thought this was supposed to be as strong as helicopter glass..WTF!" I explain to them just as you compared. Apple is feeding you alternate reality, yes it is gorilla glass, very thin gorilla glass. Bad for customers but Good for Business!

I would recomend the incipio sylicrylic case, or something like that. In my tall two story house, my phone accidentally fell from a 20 foot balcony straight onto hard tile. Not even a scratch while wearing this case.
