  • Unlocked iPhone 4s to Hit Canada on Friday

While the jailbreak community continues to absorb news of Monday's announcement by the Federal Government that, for all intents and purposes, iPhones can now be unlocked and legally jailbroken (even though Apple's warranty will likely still be voided as a result of the action by consumers) today comes news of another excitement development in the world of liberated iPhones.

This Friday, when the iPhone 4 is scheduled to debut in Canada, it seems the device will arrive already unlocked. In other words, Apple will be selling unlocked iPhone 4s through Bell, Rogers and Telus and, thus, iPhone 4 owners have the option to select their preferred wireless carrier.

Best of all, users can come and go with the carriers of their choice all over the world via SIM cards from other regional carriers. Unfortunately, the only downside of the dawn of the unlocked iPhone 4 is the price tag. The 16-gig version will run you $659 and the 32-gig iPhone 4 is $779.

    From CBC News:

Industry analysts say Apple's move puts a higher value on the iPhone 4 in Canada than in the United States, where customers currently have only one carrier, AT&T, as an option for the device.
Back in the US, however, the emergence of an unlocked iPhone will no longer be an altogether foreign concept for most users. Thanks to the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) and its high-profile supporters, the Federal Government ultimately sided with the iPhone freedom fighters and effectively authorized "jailbreaking," which comes as one of a few important new exemptions from a federal law "that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works."

Too bad for you that unlock is worthless since it's only AT&T that has the 3G bands in the US

I don't believe that any of the carriers in Canada use the same band that T-Mobile in the US uses. It would be nice but it will probably be a while before there is an iPhone that will work on T-Mobile 3G.

THE ARTICLE IS WRONG. The phones wont be sold unlocked through Bell, Rogers, Fido and Telus. YOu can only get an unlocke phone from Apple store or website, at carriers, the phones will be locked (exactly how it was in the UK last month!)

You people got it all wrong. This is the no contract price. Of course it's gonna be expensive. The carriers will still sell the iPhone 4s LOCKED at a subed price. Last year I bought my 3GS 16gb WITHOUT contract but still locked to rogers for $699 + taxes... So $649 factory unlocked is a pretty good deal. The article is wrong.

Carriers that sell phones will sell them locked while the Canada Apple store can sell them unlocked. This does not mean the carriers will stop subsidizing phones, this only means that now we have a choice, and choice is good.

Factory Unlocks, Dev Team and the next Ultrasn0w

Each phone has its own unique unlock code, the new unlock coming from the DevTeam will have the ability to assist you brute-force the unlock code for your phone

"# (bruteforcing your phones unique unlock code is huge computational effort, but to start you need seczone dump) 3:03 PM Jul 23rd via web

      # Side benefit to this iPhone4 unlock effort: can do seczone dumper tool for those wanting to bruteforce their unlock code 2:54 PM Jul 23rd via web "
      ...MuscleNerd
Don't start rumors. The upcoming unlock tool from the dev team will not Factory unlock your phone. It is a software unlock. If you update or restore then the unlock goes away just like the unlocks from them in the past.

What muscle nerd was saying was that it's possible to do a sec zone dump on the iPhone 4 that the person with the knowledge can attempt to brute force their unlock code so that it may be factory unlocked. But that is very difficult.
