  • Jailbreaking/Unlocking exempt from DMCA, aka officially legal
Source : New gov't rules allow unapproved iPhone apps - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON Owners of the iPhone will be able to break electronic locks on their devices in order to download applications that have not been approved by Apple. The government is making that legal under new rules announced Monday.

The decision to allow the practice commonly known as "jailbreaking" is one of a handful of new exemptions from a federal law that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works. Every three years, the Library of Congress authorizes such exemptions to ensure that existing law does not prevent non-infringing use of copyrighted material.

Another exemption will allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.
    And there was much rejoicing!

A factual and useful article, Messany. I'm seeing improvement. Few links to relevant articles and facts would bring this to pauliedaniesh-tier writing.

Edit: nevermind, NoodleBoy posted it first.

No. It just means they can't take any legal action against anyone just jailbreaking the phone. But this is probably going to contain all kinds of loopholes. Still awesome that it's not against the law and it's nice to see someone side with the people rather than corporations that illegally bribe them.

Very doubtful but maybe this can stop them from denying warranty claims for jailbroken phones

      This is incredible! Rejoice!

On a side note, I heard from Saurik himself that Apple's "warranty-is-voided-if-you-jailbreak" clause in their warranties may actually be ILLEGAL in some states.

Wow, Apple is going to have it's lawyers busy on this one. I wonder how this will unfold? Obviously, Apple will not put out "jailbroken or unlocked phones", but maybe ATT will hand out unlock codes freely now? Also, this "should" make it a lot easier to jailbreak in the future. I have to think this will end all the cat and mouse games between Apple and the Dev Team and other jailbreak developers.
