  • First iOS 4 vs. Windows 7 Browser Speed Test
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffsMteF6Ktk]YouTube - iPhone 3GS vs Windows Phone 7 - Browser Speed test[/ame]

    An Israeli site did the first side-by-side test (Google Translate) of web browsing, using Mobile Safari on an iPhone running iOS 4 and Mobile IE on a Samsung phone running the new Windows Phone 7. The result, somewhat surprisingly, is that the older iPhone absolutely mops the floor with the new WinMo device, though there's lots we don't know about how the test was set up. In any case, it's not the best news for Microsoft, which has been a day late and a dollar short since the beginning of the smartphone era.

    Windows Phone 7 is the update - due before the holiday season this year - to Microsoft's Windows Mobile series of operating systems. Like the Zune HD, it's based on the Windows CE 6.0 operating system. The currently-shipping version of Windows Mobile, on the other hand, is based on Windows CE 5. The Windows Mobile series has been slow to adopt many smartphone features - such as touch, which was only fully supported in the stopgap WinMo 6.5 released last year - and the company has been playing catch-up. Microsoft has been handing out a bunch of Samsung "Taylor" phones to media outlets to try and generate some pre-release buzz for their new mobile OS. The phone is supposedly built on the same hardware platform as the Samsung i8910HD and so - with an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz CPU, hardware-accelerated 3D graphics and 256MB RAM - it's about feature-equivalent with the iPhone 3GS. However, iOS 4 was designed for the more powerful iPhone 4 and iPad, so it was probably thought that it gave the Windows Mobile phone a bit of an advantage.

    Well, no.

    Pageloads on the Samsung were notably - painfully - slower than on the iPhone. Some pages take ten seconds longer to load on the WinMo phone, which is like watching paint dry on the video. The test - which was done using 3G rather than WiFi networking, was presumably done over the same network, otherwise it was hardly fair. However, there's no information in the article to explain those details (though the translation is exceptionally bad). It's important to note that Engadget's test of the same phone and OS showed results "just a hair slower than an iPhone 4," so there may well be some inconsistency in the way the tests were set up.

    WinMo will doubtless be able to run on faster hardware upon release, and there's probably some speedups that they'll be able to do between now and the final version. So there's no way to call the fight over, with production devices not expected until the end of this year. As for now, though, the first round apparently goes to the iPhone.

If you prefer Zune over iTunes, well there you go, Or if you want to always stay connected with Xbox Live and possibly run some pretty amazing 3D games. We still haven't seen everything that the Win Phone has to offer and people already discount it, seems like someone already has their minds made up. Fanboy much?
      Considering the headline of this site reads "Welcome to ModMyi.com - your premier Apple & iPhone community", you really don't think anything microsuck does will get coverage here? And to trot out old and tired insults really shows how desperate one gets for attention (I've used tired old insults here as an example of how juvenile it looks ). I myself am a Linux guy, but wouldn't for a second consider any os microsuck produce, especially on a mobile device. Palm used to be the best at it until they put Windows on their stuff, then Nokia, along comes Apple and Android. Microsuck haven't a hope. W7M is how late now? If it really believed in its stuff MS wouldn't treat its users like lemmings. Zune over "iTunes" (don't you mean iPod), really, that's so insulting to a better device. I'm no fanboy, all I have is a phone, but after using all the mobile phones mentioned barring android I'll stick with what works best for me, and that will never be W7M. Sorry dude, better find somewhere else to insult fanyboys.

      Sorry your closed mind doesn't quite get it, it is my opinion, based on experience not bias. I based my choices on actual evidence. Worked in an office where sales staff had palm phones running windows. FAIL, exchange never worked properly (cost the company a bundle to get out of that one). Good friend had an LG running windows 6.1. OMG I stopped counting the number of time he threw his phone across the room (always aimed at the sofa) his wife had the same phone. He paid another bundle to be released from the contracts (sold his phones to an unsuspecting idiot on ebay) and he went with BB (now says HE wants an iphone). I went from palm in 2008 to iphone. Just my experience mind you, I'm not a fanboy, don't own anything apple other than my phone and it has been the best phone I have had so far. I keep reading about MS W7M, but it's always pushed back. MS is the biggest IT company making os's in the world. They haven't been able to get it right. Why would I support that? IT dept at work never upgraded to Vista for reasons they would never admit to. WTF? I have no allegiances to either apple or MS. How about you? No hint of Apple envy? Or hatred? If apple is so bad then why don't you have a HTC running windows mobile 6.5?

      BTW Linux Ubuntu works for me too!

      I often find myself on this board wondering why everyone is in one camp or another. Apple camp thinks MS sucks. MS camp thinks Apple sucks. Linux is the refuge of people who want to appear "unbiased" yet still tend to support MS or Apple. I have a Win XP laptop, 2 Windows 7 machines, a Mac-Mini media computer, Fedora and openSUSE servers and have owned 3 iPhones and 2 BB. I also work for a school system where I have configured every phone imaginable. They all have goods and bads. I find it's less about what "OS is the best" or "mobile phone is the greatest" as it is finding the right tool for the job. There are things the BB does better than iPhone (calendar comes to mind) and there are things I love about the iPhone that I hated about BB. Give and take.

      As for this article, WinMo 7 looks great from the reviews I've seen so far. I love my iPhone and I can't see switching but I'm open to new ideas. Hell, that's how I ended up with the iPhone in the first place, staying open to new ideas.

      I have had many WinMo phones in the past among other OS's.
      At the moment I don't believe there is anything better than the iPhone - if I did I would probably have one. Windows Phone 7 has not yet been released, to completely rule it out before you have seen it is not the act of someone with an open mind.

      I completely agree, loyalty to a corporation (lol) has always seemed like such a ridiculous concept to me. Would any of you honestly stick with the iphone if say WP7 equipped phones blew it out of the water in terms of functionality/style/whatever?

      Agree... I too have tested and used many devices... For me the iPhone is currently the superior smartphone even with the antenna. The problem with the other devices is that they are trying to play catch-up and Apple has the upper hand. I hope for WIMO that they think outside the box on this one...

      Tests like this must be conducted over WiFi. This "test" is FUD plain and simple. All I'm seeing here is a slow network (which isn't listed). AT&T vs ?, rather than iOS4 vs Windows Phone 7.
