  • iPhone to T-Mobile USA in Fall: Rumor

Cult of Mac fronted a report last night saying that Apple and T-Mobile USA were close to concluding negotiations on bringing the iPhone to the fourth-largest US carrier. Cult of Mac's Leander Kahney quoted a "highly-placed source" as saying the deal was "80 percent likely" to go through in the third quarter of 2010, meaning this fall. While the report is pure rumor at this point, it is worth noting that Kahney has been around for a long time, and his sources are probably better than just "some guy at the T-Mobile store."

There have been rumors of a second US carrier for years now; part of the mystery is that no one knows how long AT&T's exclusive contract with Apple is supposed to be in force. USA Today reported back in 2007 that it was a five-year contract, which was seemingly confirmed by some statements Apple made during a class-action suit against them and AT&T. If the deal is still in force, this would mean that the iPhone would be AT&T exclusively until 2012. And Apple has been tight-lipped about any changes in the arrangement, with executives continuously downplaying any talk of a second carrier. COO Tim Cook said during the Apple earnings call earlier this week that the company is "very happy to be partnering with AT&T, and they've been a first-class partner and really pioneered the smartphone growth from a network point of view in the US." He cut off any further explanation, concluding "that's all I have to say about that."

While T-Mobile offers a benefit to Apple over Verizon in that T-Mobile uses the same GSM/UMTS standard as AT&T, T-Mobile's network operates on UMTS band IV - the so-called Advanced Wireless Services band - at 1700 and 2100 MHz. The iPhone 4 spec sheet only shows support for 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz, so it would still probably require Apple to do a rework of the radio to move to the new carrier. Cult of Mac's article suggests that perhaps Apple "simply didn't list" 1700 MHz support, but it would be speculation to conclude either way.

Apple refused to confirm or deny the report, and a T-Mobile rep simply said that T-Mobile does not comment on rumor or speculation."

t-mobile has **** coverage in my City so I wouldn't get one despite them having cheaper monthly plans...

But rumor also has it T-Mobile/Sprint are trying to buy each other out, if this would happen I might buy one then because sprints coverage is almost as good as Verizon's

Wouldnt the FCC certification/filing on the IP4 indicate if it has 1700Mhz support?? This should be public information?

I've had the iPhone 2g, 3g and 3gs and I unlocked them all for use with T-Mobile because I didn't want to switch to AT&T. It would be awesome if the iPhone came to T-Mobile because then the 3G would finally work and I'd only have to worry about jail breaking.

well there u have it fellas. No iPhone for t-mobile. Or any other carrier for a looooong time. Can we get a move on with life now?!?

I don't get it ....if Apples contract goes through 2012 then why don't they just come out and say it? Is it cause they're afraid they'll see a big drop in sales once the end of their contract approaches?

By the way....that's a terrible photoshop attempt.

The only way it will work, is if they could some how add the 1700MHZ via software or somenthing, but that is unrealistic...

I don't get it. You are waiting for a white Iphone 4 to unlock with T-mobile? You might as well as keep your 3GS and not waste your money. I mean why torture yourself with an Iphone 4 on a T-mobile service network. That's like me putting in a 350 motor into a Ford Focus...it may work, but.... Say what you might, in my opinion, you would be disgracing the iphone 4.

I would like to see someone else get it for the simple sake of choice and good ol' american competition. Im just tired of the rumors. Bring on the facts. I used to love coming to this website, but it seems it's all rumors and people b1!c:$@g about an unlock or jailbreak release.

It would be an easy addition - I have popped in my sister-in-laws T-Mobile sim card into my old 2G after an unlock and it worked flawlessly.

This actually has less of a chance than the iPhone goonggk verizon.

For those keeping track, verizon has 0% chance of getting the iPhone until 2012.

So this actually has negative chance.

I have put at least 500 iPhones on Tmobile over the past 3 years. I'm sure there are 100's of thousands of iPhones already on Tmobile. It will be a good thing when At&t's Contract runs out

What competition is this you speak of? American cell phone providers stopped competing decades ago when they realized they could just charge the same for everything.

ATT and Verizon have virtually the same plans. T-Mobile and Sprint don't have enough customers to compete so they gave good plans hindered by spotty coverage.

I mean, if there was competition prices would be going DOWN rather than UP (see: text messaging, the end of unlimited data, tethering, etc)
