  • Are You A Safe Driver?

State Farm recently released their Driver Feedback app so you can accurately assess just how reckless of a driver you are. Now you will know if the screams of your passengers are warranted.

The app, downloadable for free via the App Store, uses the iPhones accelerometer to assess the driver's speed, braking, and cornering. You simply start the app before driving, have it in your possession somewhere in the car, and the app gives a rating for each of the aforementioned categories. You can even share your scores with friends.

Sharing you are not with State Farm (Yoda Reference, thought that was obvious...). They claim they aren't collecting any of the data or scores provided by the app. This means you can drive recklessly and avoid an adjustment to your insurance rates.

The app allows drivers to see "hotspots" where their driving was unsafe. Drivers can compare two trips against each other as well. The app provides helpful tips too like: you are supposed to avoid the children in the crosswalk signs. And here I thoughtI was competing for a high schore every time.

The app, in my few times using it, seems to provide a fairly accurate representation of your driving habits. However, I don't see safe driving scores becoming the braggarts new ammo.

Children are in the crosswalk and you should avoid them. You should probably also avoid the signs but I'm pretty sure the fine is lower if you hit a sign than if you hit a child.

I think this is what he meant about the bad english part of the article. Mind you this is pre-edit. The internet has ways of preserving mistakes though
Exactly! The children aren't in the sign post!

Everything in my car has to be strapped down or else it will not voluntarily remain in my car. I go through tires every 10K miles. (yes I enjoy driving) Been driving just over 35 years now. How many objects have I hit? Zero. How many objects have tried to hit me? More than I care to count. How many aforementioned objects have actually succeeded in hitting me? Zero.

My driving style would probably scare more than a few of you (esp on the track) but I'll put my driving safety up against anyone else at any time. People that have never driven a car on the edge of control have no idea what to do when that line is crossed. They sit at the wheel with a dazed expression on their face as the world spins sickeningly around them NEVER MAKING ANY EFFORT to regain control. They aren't stupid. They just have never had the opportunity to learn what to do.

This app is worthless. If you want to be safe, just relax and drive. Don't "get in the car". Think instead in terms of "putting the car on." It should feel like it is part of you. Always assume the other drivers have their heads up their rear ends. Know what's around you at all times and always have more than one "alternate route" planned just in case someone in the group of cars around you does something mindnumbingly moronic.

And for those times when you do go beyond your comfort zone and "scare" yourself, don't just brush it off. REMEMBER IT. Identify what you learned, what worked and what didn't.

Don't drive wimpy, underpowered cars. The accelerator can also get you away from a crash IF the car can actually accelerate.

Lastly, make sure your car is in good working order. You shouldn't have to deal with equipment failures at the same time that you are fending off someone's immanent attempt at merging their car with yours.

If this uses the accelerometer to analyze braking and acceleration, wouldn't smaller cars give more negative feedback as the g-force would be greater?
