  • Apple Debuts Antenna Site to Belabor Point and Bash Rivals

Did anyone really think Apple would stop defending itself with the conclusion of today's pity party press conference?

If you did, you are certainly going to be disappointed with Apple's post-press conference follow up - the launch of a veritable antenna site within Apple.com that not only belabors the arguments made by Apple chief Steve Jobs today, but comprehensively emphasizes the antenna troubles that apparently plague all smartphones - not just the iPhone 4.

Every smartphone has a cellular antenna. And nearly every smartphone can lose signal strength if you hold it in a certain way. To demonstrate this, we tested iPhone 4 alongside other smartphones.
They're all there: Samsung, HTC, Blackberry... all vulnerably exposed to the world by Apple - a move that is bound to infuriate Cupertino's biggest competitors while stressing once again that Apple won't have its iPhone 4 dragged through the mud all alone. In addition to the video of today's media event, Apple is also publishing what amounts to a comprehensive study of smartphone antennas. It's pretty obvious that Apple is hoping those complaining about the iPhone 4 will be so enamored of the company's $100 million dollar test labs that you'll be happy just to have a device that was actually tested inside something so cool and shiny

Already panned by some critics as cheesy, petty, and self-serving, Apple's antenna site is up and running with the clear intention of putting our minds at ease about this overblown "Death Grip" hype with a helpful reminder that Apple's engineers "have logged thousands of hours designing and testing iPhone 4 in these state-of-the-art facilities." In other words: we understand this better than you do, so shut up, take your free case, and we'll see you when the iPhone 5 comes out.

Apple lives in a different world. It's perfect and rosy. Once in awhile they give us some of their left-overs. Recently it was the iPhone 4. Thank you oh god-above Apple.

You spend a minimum of 199 plus tax or no tax depending on your area, but back to topic.

Since you spent at least 199 like me you can not spend another at least 30bucks for a case to fix the death grip issue?

And now Apple is giving us a free case, now do not think everyone is getting a bumper, Apple said not enough out there or being made to get everyone so other companies are working with Apple to release free cases.

You do not like having to cover the antenna up, well then you get a refund.

That's it argument over, sure they did not fully grasp "really testing" a phone in real world situations, but again we are not forced to buy anything.

At the end of the day the decision is ours we get to pick what we want, and to be honest I have had my iPhone 4 since launch day, no dropped calls, no proximity sensor problem, with case no signal loss due to grip.

Same goes for another 6 iPhone 4's in my family 0 issue's we all have cases on ours.

The decision is ours stop crying about Apple's mistake we know, sure it is a big problem but it really won't effect anyone, you say wtf how does it not, well all you have to do is return the iPhone 4 you are not in touch with and go to the other options.

      I dared...what bunk!

Apple has successfully blurred the issue. Sure, many phones can drop bars when "blocking" the antenna locations with your hand(s). But that's not the issue is it? On the iPhone4, Apple located a gap between 2 "external" antennas in a spot where many people are likely to touch. This can cause the signal to weaken to the point of dropping calls. Throw on a case, and the iP4 is like any other phone. Without a case...design flaw. Hence the great case give-away.

They should just let people exchange their phones. The ones that get returned would be great for a refurb promo. It is obviously hardware related...a bad batch of some part that hit a bunch of phones. The iPhone 4 that I preordered does not have this problem so just figure out what part was faulty, fix it, and dump them off as refurrbed or replacements.

      so, go away.

actually, what im surprised no one is mentioning is the improvement in the GPS antenna. i would have traded a little voice reception for an improved gps capability many months ago. i dont have a death grip issue at all, but my phone can establish a good gps signal inside my house and can track my progress through the woods on my bike and create great maps of rides. hell, i use that more than i talk on the damned thing. my garmin just became obsolete.

This whole thing baffles me! I have not seen any significant problems from my 4. With or without a case.
I think some people just NEED to complain.

So Apple takes an already small computer/phone, and they make it even smaller by using the antenna to encase it. So you lose a fraction of a bar, in a place that you already probably had a crappy reception!

I say, either enjoy your 4 for the wonderfully great creation that it is, or take it back. Nothing is going to change, except for the fact that you will now get a free case.

I mean who isn't going to put a case or an invisible shield on their IPhone 4?

Exactly. It's like people have nothing better to do than complain. People need to get a grip. No pun intended :P

While I totally agree with your last remark, I do not with the first!

You do not have the right to say that ANYBODY who owns an Iphone 4 do not deserve!

First it was bought with the person who bought the Iphone 4 own money, not yours it was their money! Therefore they met the requirements and DO have the right to have the Iphone 4!

Also if the iphone does not work as it should they do have the right to complain as they have work hard for the money they bought the iphone with!

I have an Iphone 4 with the proximity sensor problem and yes I do have the right to complain! I am waiting for the problem to be solved or I will take it back simple enough!

Do you have an Iphone 4? If yes does it work great? If so the simply state that you do not have any problems with your, do bash people with the Iphone 4 that have problems!

Sorry my bad as I reread your post and I see you do have an Iphone 4, WITH a problem!

I really need to point something out here. First of all, I have had my problem as well. I had yellow spots on the display. They did not go away, and that was something that i had to fix. Apple replaced the phone with no questions asked. They are committed to pleasing us! People are acting like they are not, but people forget things very quickly.

The so called deAth grip is nothing. It's probably very isolated, and mostly because people that barely had a signal to begin with, now are having a problem picking that crappy signal up

No tech item is perfect, and when you look at all the things we have been given in this phone, you then have to ask yourself if one tiny loss of signal in a miniscule percentage of users is worth causing such a stink about

They gave us an HD display, HD camcorder (that allows us to stop carrying our FLIPS), Gyroscope, faster 3G, better battery, 2 cameras (one which has awesome resolution), a revolutionary new video phone, greater possibilities for apps, and they still managed to make the phone smaller.

How did they do it? They saved space by putting the antenna on the outside and used it as an encasement for all the things they improved. It's actually very brilliant if people would just stop and marvel at what they have. They have an entire collection of all the things we love, right in their pockets. Laptop, camera, camcorder, phone, game console, email, web browser. I mean come on!

So we had to sacrifice a itty bit of reception. However we only have to sacrifice said reception if we are too stubborn to put a case on our phone.

If you have something actually wrong with your iPhone, then apple would be eager to remedy it, but for all the complaining about something that does not need fixing, they can't.

They have decided that even though it's something they can't fix, because it's really not a problem, they will do the next best thing. Do a massive give away so that people don't have an excuse to not have the phone in a case.

Personally I don't think any other company is very likely to do anything!

Only .55% is reporting this issue? That's miniscule.
But the fact that it was Apple, the media gets wind of it, and it is suddenly mass hysteria over it.
If it really is this "0.55%" Jobs do not need to do this press conference. If it is only 0.55% AppleCare would not put out a bulletin to tell their representatives not to give free bumpers when issue start popping up. If it is 0.55% it would not take this long for Jobs to "consider" giving out free bumpers.

      Some think 0.55% is small.

      Hmm: 3,000,000 * 0.55% = 165,000. (oops .... 16,500)

16,500 confirmed complaints about reception in THREE (3) weeks - not counting the many multiples of others.

U handle 16,500 calls about the same issue in 3 weeks, then tell me there is no real problem !!!!

Oops. 16,500 is 0.55%. Can't read my calculators digits (haha).
Personally, I still believe that many calls about a single issue in 3 weeks is large. And ... even Apple confirmed dropped calls are 1% higher than for the 3GS. Put both of these together and it's a fact; the so-called advanced antenna design is not-so-advanced (haha).

And that saved space is irrelevant when you have to throw a case on it in order to use the phone as a phone.

There's a reason why the other cell phone companies haven't done this it's called interference.

      165,000 of 3,000,000 = 5.5%
      .55% of 3,000,000 = 16,500

      3 weeks = 21 days

16,500 / 21 = ~786 complaints per day. That isn't much on a national scale. Also, some of these complaints might be issues outside of the signal issue (e.g. yellow staining, scratches, cracks, etc.).

Right, and like I was saying before. The parts of these complaints that are actually problems, are fixed by apple so fast that this average will actually drop from here forward

Once the first person complained about their reception and gave a theory about it, then everyone just jumps on from there. I can't believe apple is actually acknowledging it by giving away bumpers!

When a negligibly thin layer of nonconductive material is placed over the sweet spot and it prevents the interference and decrease in signal strength when holding it in the same exact "death grip" then it is blatantly obvious there is a design flaw, be it hardware or software based. No, it isn't enough to affect most users that are in high coverage areas, but to pretend the issue isn't there at all is hogwash.
