  • Apple Debuts Antenna Site to Belabor Point and Bash Rivals

Did anyone really think Apple would stop defending itself with the conclusion of today's pity party press conference?

If you did, you are certainly going to be disappointed with Apple's post-press conference follow up - the launch of a veritable antenna site within Apple.com that not only belabors the arguments made by Apple chief Steve Jobs today, but comprehensively emphasizes the antenna troubles that apparently plague all smartphones - not just the iPhone 4.

Every smartphone has a cellular antenna. And nearly every smartphone can lose signal strength if you hold it in a certain way. To demonstrate this, we tested iPhone 4 alongside other smartphones.
They're all there: Samsung, HTC, Blackberry... all vulnerably exposed to the world by Apple - a move that is bound to infuriate Cupertino's biggest competitors while stressing once again that Apple won't have its iPhone 4 dragged through the mud all alone. In addition to the video of today's media event, Apple is also publishing what amounts to a comprehensive study of smartphone antennas. It's pretty obvious that Apple is hoping those complaining about the iPhone 4 will be so enamored of the company's $100 million dollar test labs that you'll be happy just to have a device that was actually tested inside something so cool and shiny

Already panned by some critics as cheesy, petty, and self-serving, Apple's antenna site is up and running with the clear intention of putting our minds at ease about this overblown "Death Grip" hype with a helpful reminder that Apple's engineers "have logged thousands of hours designing and testing iPhone 4 in these state-of-the-art facilities." In other words: we understand this better than you do, so shut up, take your free case, and we'll see you when the iPhone 5 comes out.

The point I make is not to say there is no problem. It is to say that it is miniscule at best. First of all, there is not one piece of perfect technology. To pack all of the things into such a small device is amazing. The fact that this "death grip" is all people can find wrong with the new IPhone is even more amazing. Any other sort of complaints are very isolated and when reported people are getting their phones replaced immediately
To see such a big deal being made out of it is just laughable! The fact that something so thin as a Zagg Invisible shield, or wrapsol will completely stop this makes it even more comical. It is insane to think that anyone would be unwilling to at least put one of these skins on, and it just shows that all they want to do is complain. So you don't want to spend $20 on a shield, well..... Zagg will give you 40 PERCENT off just for entering the IPad giveaway. So now you are down to around $10 for a great product that will protect your 4, and also make the death grip null and void. Plus then you don't have the excuse of a case adding to the size of the phone.

Ok... So you don't want to spend even $10 to protect your $200-$600 phone? Even though that is sad to even contemplate, it's typical! You still have an option of putting a small piece of scotch tape, but only because you think $10 is too much to spend on something that you will use all day, every day

If you are still too difficult of a person to please, Apple is still bending over backwards and giving you a FREE bumper.

.....and if you don't like all that, you can just return the 4 for a full refund. If you sit back and think about it, how many of us would actually take this kind of crap from a customer?

The real lesson about this debacle everyone should learn is how worthless and meaningless "bars" are. Every phone uses a different equation and when with 1-2 "bars" you can get internet/keep calls. Take Froyo for example:

iPhone can show 4 bars even 3 bars and still have as much of a reception as a 4 bar Droid. AnandTech actually manage to keep a call going without dropping at -121 dBm, the very bottom of 1 bar and call/data worked fine at -113dBm, a point in which 4.0 and Froyo would tell you No Service.

      In my defense, I'm blind.

      Droid only has 4 bars.

I think this is a great point, and apparently so did Jobs. According to him Apple wanted it's equation to represent actual reception, or close to it.

I know I've had phones before that would show bars, but I would not be able to make calls. That is much more aggravating than a phone showing a lower signal when there actually is one.

No you are an idiot because you still claim there isn't an issue when even apple has admitted there was one. The spelling is just the icing on the cake.

Apple hasn't admitted there's an issue. They've given an alternative to those who are dissatisfied with the so-called "death grip." They've explained numerous times to bimbos like you that every phone has an antenna, and that by blocking that antenna, it can cause a depressed signal. I haven't had one issue with my 4. It's overhyped media-driven nonsense like so much other garbage that you'd jump on the band wagon to believe. So you, my fellow modmyi user, are an idiot. Quit complaining like a sore loser.

And like you haven't mistyped something before. But then again, you'd be arrogant enough to refute that...

Lastly, all I have to say is, to each his own. I sincerely apologize if anyone has interpreted my posts as calling you an idiot should you believe in the death grip, but frankly I'm sick of people ranting and complaining..* That's all people seem to do nowadays. Nothing is ever good enough for anybody.

*=This apology excludes you, Moosestache. You truly are an idiot for your childish bashing and arrogance.

No, it isn't enough to affect most users that are in high coverage areas, but to pretend the issue isn't there at all is hogwash.

How do you refute my post then? How does a hardware modification (adding the nonconductive material) boost signal strength if there isn't an issue to begin with?

Does putting a case on a BB or HTC phone fix their issues too?

Every phone is different, it's not fair to compare it to phones as ancient as the BB or a simple HTC phone. Having the external antenna design has provided me with nothing but the best performance I've ever had on a cellphone, and I've gone through many different phones on many different carriers. The design gives much more benefit than it does loss.

I just get sick of arrogant pricks who post over and over that there is nothing wrong with the phone. There is. Apple isn't sending $35 bumpers to everyone out if the goodness of their hearts. I am happy your phone works for you, if you even have one. Just stop bashing everyone else who isn't satisfied with theirs.

Wow dude, nice. You fail at life. You don't like your phone return it, no one's forcing you to keep it. Apple is being generous to your unappreciative *** by giving you a free $29* bumper. Taking a hit for valuable customers just to go that extra mile. I'm done talking to this brick wall..

What exactly qualifies a Blackberry or HTC phone as "ancient"? Last I check, they are still in production

Apple even said the phone drops more calls per 100 than the 3GS so the overall performance is up for debate.

You honestly think Apple is just giving away bumpers and cases to be nice? Furthermore, we are supposed to use these free bumpers and cases for what reason? To prevent us from losing our signal? Why would they do anything though? I mean if there isn't a problem to begin with...

The operating system for BB and some HTC's is what qualifies them as ancient. Ancient is a bit of a strong word, but compared to what kind of OS is available now, it really is.

Or if you'd like, you can go to apple.com and watch the actual video of the press conference and hear Steve say it himself.

Now I know you will argue that <1 additional dropped call per 100 is a very small amount, but the average dropped calls per 100 for most phones these days seems to be around 1.5 per 100. When you look at it as a possible 50% (just using rough #s) increase in dropped calls per 100, it certainly raises more concern.

Yes I just corrected myself, my bad. That's still not a big deal. And that's without a case. For crying out loud you could put some scotch tape over the area and that will do the trick. It's not a big deal. And now I wait to be bashed by all the haters who want to kill me for daring to say so.

Anyways, I'm done talking about this. If its really a huge issue, demand for it wouldn't be so damn high and people who have it would actually return it.
