  • Apple Debuts Antenna Site to Belabor Point and Bash Rivals

Did anyone really think Apple would stop defending itself with the conclusion of today's pity party press conference?

If you did, you are certainly going to be disappointed with Apple's post-press conference follow up - the launch of a veritable antenna site within Apple.com that not only belabors the arguments made by Apple chief Steve Jobs today, but comprehensively emphasizes the antenna troubles that apparently plague all smartphones - not just the iPhone 4.

Every smartphone has a cellular antenna. And nearly every smartphone can lose signal strength if you hold it in a certain way. To demonstrate this, we tested iPhone 4 alongside other smartphones.
They're all there: Samsung, HTC, Blackberry... all vulnerably exposed to the world by Apple - a move that is bound to infuriate Cupertino's biggest competitors while stressing once again that Apple won't have its iPhone 4 dragged through the mud all alone. In addition to the video of today's media event, Apple is also publishing what amounts to a comprehensive study of smartphone antennas. It's pretty obvious that Apple is hoping those complaining about the iPhone 4 will be so enamored of the company's $100 million dollar test labs that you'll be happy just to have a device that was actually tested inside something so cool and shiny

Already panned by some critics as cheesy, petty, and self-serving, Apple's antenna site is up and running with the clear intention of putting our minds at ease about this overblown "Death Grip" hype with a helpful reminder that Apple's engineers "have logged thousands of hours designing and testing iPhone 4 in these state-of-the-art facilities." In other words: we understand this better than you do, so shut up, take your free case, and we'll see you when the iPhone 5 comes out.

Try asking Microsoft for a new xbox because the Ethernet port wasn't fast enough. If you iPhone died you could take it too apple and instantly get a new one (no waiting 3 weeks to get it back). not the same scenario.

If your iPhone hardware is faulty (not working as designed), by all means, go to an Apple Store and have it replaced. I think you're having a hard time differentiating "faulty" and "flawed"

That's my only gripe with the current situation. Love the phone, hate the attitude from Apple.
lol your right but that is very far fetched if it did happen i guess i would still use it as a ipod touch. and i would be mad and i would just go back to Android. If ATT had the moto X, i wouldn't bother with a iphone but they don't so i guess i just have to wait for a gsm one to come out during the 4th quarter.

To the people complaining about Apples press release or about their antenna problem and demanding a recall where Steve will come to your house with a brand new, redesigned iPhone tomorrow don't have a leg to stand on in your arguments. Apple is giving you the option to either keep your phone if you are happy with it, or return it if you decide that it does not work to your satisfaction. You are not being cheated out of anything! It's 100% satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. How can they beat that deal? Maybe by giving you a free case if you are happy with it and decide to keep it.

Hanging on the .55% complaints is just whistling past the graveyard. Every iPhone4 has this issue and it's not going away without a hardware fix. If you're lucky enough to not experience the "death grip" because your skin isn't conducting over the gap, good for you.

And now he's taunting the competition? Whoa! Dumb move. Look for an all-out spoofing onslaught from the competition. Way to give the issue more life, Stevie-boy.
This is plain retarded. Every iPhone 4 does not have the issue. I've had mine side-by-side with another iPhone 4 that did have the issue, and it has nothing to do with my skin conducting one minute and not the next. My phone is f'in perfect. I don't have a proximity problem or anything. I live in one of the humid armpits of the US (Houston), and I can guarantee you that it's humid enough to make it conduct. I've even taken the damn thing in to the restroom with the shower running and had all the mirrors fog up. It's just not every iPhone 4. Why won't people believe that?!?! The only time people care to say anything is when it's a problem. The people that are doing aOK don't give two shits.

They think like this: "Sucks for those people...Man, I'm awesome and lucky"

The reality, those that have the problem are UNLUCKY. Most people don't have this issue, and you whiney little pricks blow things out of proportion.

I am NOT an apple fanboy. I begrudgingly switched to an iPhone because I've been sucking Microsoft's dangle since elementary school when I was rocking DOS, and I've been against the competition since day one. I still do NOT use nor do I really want to use a MAC. The only thing Apple that I like is the iPhone, and I started on a 3GS just last year. I think it's awesome; however, my parents both use Android phones, as do several of my close friends, and after playing with those, I find them just as intuitive and easy to use as the iPhone. Why do I not switch phones then? Because I don't have a single god damned issue. If I did, you'd better believe I'd switch phones. All I care about is the ability to use a phone, not the brand or company it comes from. If I did, I wouldn't have bought a freaking Apple product at all.

In regards to the press release, I think it's absolutely ludicrous how everyone is bashing Apple for bringing the competition to light. If competitors' phones f'up in the same way, then why the hell not? As I said, I don't care for Apple through some emotional or psychological connection, but common sense begs the need to understand them not taking heat for something every company is experiencing. It's just stupid. It just makes you look bad and your competitors look better--for no justifiable reason. Notice how it was NEVER stated that EVERY other smart phone has this issue. He said most. He gave several prominent fixtures in the market place. How the hell is that not reasonable? He did it amicably and he was being honest, at least it seemed like it. So many people are so open to hate that they don't think about what they are doing and just jump on the bandwagon.

      Lastly...
Maybe this antenna debacle will allow me to finally buy some Apple stock! Since this is really a non-issue, it sure would be great to jump on board while all the stupids run in circles.

irrelevant comparisons are irrelevant. the 360 and PS3 issues didn't show up for several months into ownership and construction of those devices.

in the case of the iPhone 4, people have been complaining in droves since launch. as in, for all 3 weeks the product has been on the market.

and no, people aren't asking too much to expect reasonable antennae design. this is a case of form over function and now they're "addressing" it by giving out free band-aids.

call it what it is: the cheap quick-fix for Apple to pacify some. Others like me will simply return the phone like I am going to tomorrow morning and wait until September for the "fixed" version of the phone to stealth launch, instantly devaluing all iPhones purchased from June to the end of August.

Whether it is an antenna issue(which I have not had any problems with), or complaining that the latest jailbreak hasn't been released quick enough.

Stop being such whiny little *******.

This issue has been blown way out of proportion.
Only .55% is reporting this issue? That's miniscule.
But the fact that it was Apple, the media gets wind of it, and it is suddenly mass hysteria over it.

How many products have come out with much larger concerns and a larger complaint base that are never really heard about. Seriously, move on people.

Now, complaining that Steve "outed" the competition?
Products are compared to each other everyday in ads and what not. Where are the complaints about that? Nobody really cares, because that is part of the business.

If you bought an iPhone and are not happy with it, return it for a full refund.
If you don't want to return it, that means you really do think it is a better phone, otherwise you would return and get another brand.
I could not have put it better myself. Well said.. To all you complaining asses out there, return it or shut up! This is seriously the most over-publicized and blown up situation I've ever had the displeasure of hearing about. Grow up people and stop expecting handouts.

only the simple-minded can think the solution is that simple. many people transferred their phone numbers from other carriers putting them in a tough situation. others sold their previous phones expecting that a 4th generation product would be relatively trouble-free. many more waited several months for this phone to launch only now to be put-off by problematic developments.

for me, it's as simple as returning the phone and I'll be taking advantage of that tomorrow. for many others, it's nowhere near that simple. but juvenile minds usually fail to critically think about other's issues.

oh and that .55% quote is worthless. I've never called to "complain" about hardware or software issues because I don't see the purpose it would serve. and really, considering how many news reports there were, why would people feel a need to call in? it's not like issue wasn't getting attention. lol.

if you don't understand anything else, just know that when the product line receives its stealth revision in coming months, it will be because that ".55%" was much bigger than that, because the issue was real, and because Apple knew they need to fix it. after all, if it's fine, why fix it ever?

If you can't handle people being frustrated by the situation

No I'm just tired of arrogant, pretentious people who are so consumed by their own greed and self denial that they have to create a fictional situation and impose on a company that has done nothing but benefit them just to get that extra inch of self profit. It's people who focus on made-up problems like this one, and quite frankly people who are just idiots in terms of technological education, that cripple corporations from making real innovative progressions just so that they, the simple minded lazy individuals, can continue in their infantile ways towards getting what they want. If you don't like it, return it. Just to educate you a bit, every phone has an antenna attached to it. By blocking that antenna, you may see some signal loss. Is that not just the most astounding thing? Unbelievable right? Well sorry to burst your bubble but every phone will lose some reception more or less when held a certain way. If you can't handle that, well yes, I have to say, it is as simple as returning the phone. No one is holding a gun up to your head telling you to keep the phone. Another sign of incompetence right there, complaining about how much you hate a product, yet not returning it? Yeah, that really makes a lot of sense, lol.

Point taken. Not sure I agree with the reach around statement but point taken. Just lately the articles seem to be written to spark anger between thoes that are happy and thoes that are not. To me writing should (again IMO) report just the facts and not steer to a side with any anger. People (for the most part unless it comes to jb questions) are smart and can form their own opinions. No sence in starting a MMI civil war. The writers know their audience much like a school teacher wo tries to force their opinion on impressionable minds. In addition we all know a bit of spin and the fact that text can loose some meaning coupled with some of the Mmi mbrs that get out of hand on the complaints. Turn some of these threads to bash each other....

I do read and enjoy most of your posts (intellectual and helpful). Unfortunatly Not all posts warrent the same from a few posters. My comment to the news regardless of what i feel about the situation with apple was for the choice of words used by the author. Which (not all) seems to always take a strong stance against all apples decisions.

But like I said good point. And I understand what your saying and agree just not with the writers retoric as (IMO) better words could be used by him in his news releases.

So, apple hasn't actually said there is a defect right? But, if they change the design behind the scenes and we find out, wouldn't that prove there was a flaw? If so, then the phone would be replaceable under apple care, right? How would you prove that there was a change, and that they did it to fix the death grip, that would be the question. I'd be interested in seeing the next few shipments tested and torn apart. I bet they ninja in a fix under the radar and don't tell anyone to keep from having to replace units.
