  • Free Bumpers for All as Steve Jobs Defiantly Praises iPhone 4 at Apple Press Conference

Taking direct aim at the iPhone 4's infamous Death Grip phenomenon by kicking off the event with "the iPhone 4 antenna song" music video, Steve Jobs took the stage at Apple's press conference this morning from the company's campus in Cupertino and promised to answer our longstanding questions about the iPhone 4's antenna dilemma.

"You know, we're not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren't perfect either," Jobs said, first noting the record sales and popularity of the iPhone 4 in an expected moment of self-congratulation. "But we want to make all of our users happy. If you don't know that about Apple, you don't know Apple. We love making our users happy."

"We've been working on this for just 22 days," Jobs said, suggesting that "Antennagate" caught Apple off guard just as it did everyone else. Citing internal tests (because YouTube clips weren't adequate), Jobs said his company "first learned that this doesn't just happen to the iPhone. Nokia, Motorola and other phones have this issue..." Demonstrating how the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the Samsung Omnia II similarly lose bars when held improperly, Steve Jobs clearly wanted to make it known that the iPhone 4 isn't alone in the world of Death Grips.

"This is life in the smartphone world. Phones aren't perfect. It's a challenge for the whole industry. Every phone has weak spots."
"We had a reporting error," Said Jobs, finally speaking to the algorithm and showing off the elaborate $100 million dollar facility in which the iPhone 4 was tested, re-tested, and tested again. "We screwed up on our algorithm. Some of these other phones may be too generous. Our choice was to put the correct algorithm in. And we did that with the new update. You'll still see a drop as we haven't figured out a way around the laws of physics yet."

Apple's chief went on to note that "just one half of one percent" of iPhone 4 users have actually complained about the Death Grip, implying that the media frenzy surrounding the problem is a bigger problem than the "problem" itself. "In the early days of the iPhone 3GS, return rates were 6%," revealed Jobs. "So for the iPhone 4, you think half the people must be returning their phones with what you read online. Well it's 1.7%, less than a third of the 3GS returns."

Finally admitting (but barely) that all is not perfect, Apple's chief executive indicated that, while Apple believes the iPhone 4 is superior to the 3GS antenna, it actually drops more calls per 100 than the 3GS. "We're being transparent," he said, observing that the exact dropped call data can't be revealed as its within AT&T's discretion to withhold that info from competitors. But... "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

"Now when we look at this data, it's hard to escape the conclusion that there is a problem, but that problem is affecting a very small number of users."
So what's the solution, we all collectively ask? Apple's answer: free bumpers for all and iOS 4.0.1, which was released Thursday. "We think this has been so blown out of proportion," Jobs said, verbalizing what his comments implied all along. "It's fun to have a story, but it's not fun on the other side. So here's what we're going to do to make our users happy. The first part is the software update, that fixes the way the bars report and other bugs, that's out now. Second, people said the bumper fixes everything... 'why don't you give everybody a case'? Okay -- we'll give you a free case." Jobs added: "If you got one, we'll give you a refund."

"We're going to send you a free case. We can't make enough bumpers. No way we can make enough in the quarter. So we're going to source some cases and give you a choice."
"And if you're not happy, you can bring the phone back. We'll give you a full refund within 30 days. No restocking fee. We want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund."

At the presentation's conclusion, which ended with a hand-holding sort of moment and proclamation of how much Apple loves it users, Jobs revealed that the white iPhone will begin shipping at the end of July. We're guessing Jobs and crew hope the white iPhone 4 will be the biggest Apple story from now on. But my hunch is that we haven't heard the last of the "Death Grip."

You should really learn how to type, spell, and use grammar correctly before telling others that they're "not to bright."

Like I said in my previous post, I spoke to an apple rep who then spoke to his supervisor and he told me YES YOU CAN GET A BUMPER FOR FREE, BUT IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE BUMPERS OR DO NOT WANT ONE YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY CASE THAT THEY HAVE LISTED IN THE FIX FOR THE RECEPTION

Mine doesn't have any problems when I hold it in the so called 'death grip'. Yours might, but mine doesn't.

Trust me, you don't know who's phone does what. I have no idea what your phone does, and you can't make the case you know what mine is doing with any authority. Does it affect the signal strength? Yes. Enough that I care and get all irate about something I'm not forced to keep? No. I get VERY moderate drops in speed, no difference in call quality or calls dropping. Not enough for me to get irate and start attacking others for having a difference of opinion about a product we both own, and a product we both can return if unsatisfied with. If I were to give my iPhone 4 because I was unsatisfied I'd go out and buy an iPod Touch and still get to keep my app investment.

Simple really, when emotions don't cloud judgement.

Agreed. You are coming here to bash people that don't have problems, while complaining about people who agree with Apple that not all users are affected. They've extended an offer to give you a case to fix the problem. Either take the case, or return the phone. Not. That. Hard.

if anyone has ever taken statistics....it ALL can be skewed. You can make any number look the way you want. Ask the right group (or demographics) of ppl to get the stats in your favor.

Get a free case. Not that big of a deal.

(or return the phone for full refund)

(that was a joke by the way. I wasn't serious)

They have extended a BS offer that is not acceptable. If your phone works fine good, go away and be happy with it. Why should I have to be forced to return the phone and take a big hit on all the apps I purchased? Why should I have to buy new apps on another platform since I can't use the apps on anything other then an iphone? A warranty is in place to fix problems with a product, not to get you a stupid free case, fix my phone, I'm not asking for anything more.

I got my free bumper earlier today but I have to say, it does take away from overall aesthetics. With the bumper on my phone, it will not fit into my truck dock mount or my home sound system dock. I think I might stick with my ifrogz case or go naked with it.

Sorry for the crappy pics, they are from my old 3GS

Um, so go make one, it's an open forum, I bet you will be the only one there, obviously if everyone is here talking and upset that shows it is a big issue and a lot of people are mad about it. I would love my iPhone4 if I could just make calls with it...

Easy, you buy an iPod Touch. If the offer is not acceptable to you, RETURN THE PHONE. You're making an issue out of something that is easily fixed. Why should you continue to demand that someone give you something that you don't actually require to own, at least not this specific one. You can buy other phones, you can buy an iPod to run your apps you've already bought. Either deal with it, or return the phone and get an iPod. Not everyone is having this problem and THEY'VE OFFERED TO GIVE YOU A CASE that protects your investment from damage. I'd be willing to bet if they fixed this 'design problem' and significantly changed the look of the phone, you'd complain about that too. This is easily fixed, take the free case, return the phone, or deal with it. An iPod Touch will run all the apps you need to run for the most part.

If your phone doesn't work good, sorry to hear that. Either take the free case, keep the phone and continue to complain, return it, and go away. You're complaining about people agree with Apple and calling them arrogant. In fact, you're do the exact same thing. We disagree that this wasn't acceptable. You can stay, or walk away and find another easy avenue (iPod Touch) to use your apps.

Steve appeared genuinely perplexed up there. He questioned why the press didn't just give him the benefit of the doubt, without question. He just doesn't understand what all the fuss is about. This is the first time any significant portion of the user base loudly rejected something Steve foisted upon them, and he doesn't know how to handle it.

Steve kept saying Apple LOVES its customers.

Well of course they do. Why wouldn't they? The typical Apple customer is the ultimate customer, and any company can only dream about having customers like them.

Typically Apple fanboy customers buy, and rave about, anything Steve provides them. Who cares if it works properly, or how artificially limited it is by the whims of what Steve says you can, and can't, do with his products. And he truely believes they are HIS products, not yours. God forbid that you would try to use what you purchased as you see fit, verses how Steve decided you should.

All companies would love to have customers that they could repeatedly abuse, denegrade, overcharge for the priviledge, and then have them still come back for more.

Cases are annoying, I dont want a case!!! Who wants to have to take it out of the case every time you want to stick it in a dock or use pretty much any accessory with it? I purchased one of those RF remotes for it, I guess I have to now choose from either using it as a remote or as a phone, cant do both...

Take the bumper or return the phone. Honestly this should all go away. I can't get a good read on whether I should upgrade my 3GS because of all the imbeciles complaining (SUING?!?) Apple because their latest offering isn't... Well, better, basically. This is asanine. You have no grounds to complain when there's no restock fee. The class action suit has no legs (which is why apple removed the restock fee). Suck it up or switch to a lesser phone (take your pick... EVO, Droid X) but either way please stop with all the inane noise that obscures a read on how good the iPhone 4 really is. God don't you sheep realize that the media is leading you by the nose? Enjoy your top-of-the-line smartphone already.

      Sheesh.

iFrogz cases don't require you to remove the phone to use it in a dock for most accessories.
