  • Free Bumpers for All as Steve Jobs Defiantly Praises iPhone 4 at Apple Press Conference

Taking direct aim at the iPhone 4's infamous Death Grip phenomenon by kicking off the event with "the iPhone 4 antenna song" music video, Steve Jobs took the stage at Apple's press conference this morning from the company's campus in Cupertino and promised to answer our longstanding questions about the iPhone 4's antenna dilemma.

"You know, we're not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren't perfect either," Jobs said, first noting the record sales and popularity of the iPhone 4 in an expected moment of self-congratulation. "But we want to make all of our users happy. If you don't know that about Apple, you don't know Apple. We love making our users happy."

"We've been working on this for just 22 days," Jobs said, suggesting that "Antennagate" caught Apple off guard just as it did everyone else. Citing internal tests (because YouTube clips weren't adequate), Jobs said his company "first learned that this doesn't just happen to the iPhone. Nokia, Motorola and other phones have this issue..." Demonstrating how the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the Samsung Omnia II similarly lose bars when held improperly, Steve Jobs clearly wanted to make it known that the iPhone 4 isn't alone in the world of Death Grips.

"This is life in the smartphone world. Phones aren't perfect. It's a challenge for the whole industry. Every phone has weak spots."
"We had a reporting error," Said Jobs, finally speaking to the algorithm and showing off the elaborate $100 million dollar facility in which the iPhone 4 was tested, re-tested, and tested again. "We screwed up on our algorithm. Some of these other phones may be too generous. Our choice was to put the correct algorithm in. And we did that with the new update. You'll still see a drop as we haven't figured out a way around the laws of physics yet."

Apple's chief went on to note that "just one half of one percent" of iPhone 4 users have actually complained about the Death Grip, implying that the media frenzy surrounding the problem is a bigger problem than the "problem" itself. "In the early days of the iPhone 3GS, return rates were 6%," revealed Jobs. "So for the iPhone 4, you think half the people must be returning their phones with what you read online. Well it's 1.7%, less than a third of the 3GS returns."

Finally admitting (but barely) that all is not perfect, Apple's chief executive indicated that, while Apple believes the iPhone 4 is superior to the 3GS antenna, it actually drops more calls per 100 than the 3GS. "We're being transparent," he said, observing that the exact dropped call data can't be revealed as its within AT&T's discretion to withhold that info from competitors. But... "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

"Now when we look at this data, it's hard to escape the conclusion that there is a problem, but that problem is affecting a very small number of users."
So what's the solution, we all collectively ask? Apple's answer: free bumpers for all and iOS 4.0.1, which was released Thursday. "We think this has been so blown out of proportion," Jobs said, verbalizing what his comments implied all along. "It's fun to have a story, but it's not fun on the other side. So here's what we're going to do to make our users happy. The first part is the software update, that fixes the way the bars report and other bugs, that's out now. Second, people said the bumper fixes everything... 'why don't you give everybody a case'? Okay -- we'll give you a free case." Jobs added: "If you got one, we'll give you a refund."

"We're going to send you a free case. We can't make enough bumpers. No way we can make enough in the quarter. So we're going to source some cases and give you a choice."
"And if you're not happy, you can bring the phone back. We'll give you a full refund within 30 days. No restocking fee. We want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund."

At the presentation's conclusion, which ended with a hand-holding sort of moment and proclamation of how much Apple loves it users, Jobs revealed that the white iPhone will begin shipping at the end of July. We're guessing Jobs and crew hope the white iPhone 4 will be the biggest Apple story from now on. But my hunch is that we haven't heard the last of the "Death Grip."

Then what, The phones produced after that date will be different in hardware design? Thats my guess!!!
No, I think Steve (backed off the date) and stated in Q&A that in September they will re-evaluate the situation. Doesn't sound like they are going to redesign it for new shipments. He basically said there is nothing wrong with the design.

Edit: Here it is from Engadget...

10:53AM Q: On the September 30th date, is that to let people know that you'll have to buy a case?
Steve: Not really, we'll reevaluate then. Maybe we'll have a better idea. Maybe Eminem will come out with a band-aid that goes over the corner and everyone will want that.

Wow, you brain-dead crApple disciples never cease to blow my mind... You tards really think this "fix" is acceptable??

I'm a Ferrari "fan-boy", but if my new 458 Italia comes with a hole in the engine block, NO WAY am I gonna accept a free blob of silicone or duct tape over the hole as a "fix"!! Would YOU!?!?!

You fools can hate and flame on me all you want for this comment, but at least I am capable of deductive reasoning and individual thought!

All I can do now is PRAY that the backlash to crApple from the media and people with a brain, finally buries them and brings that arrogant fuktard Steve Jobs to his knees!

Basically, they're saying what they have been all along. Its not a problem strictly for an iPhone. All cellphones (especially on AT&T) will have dropped calls. You can either bring the phone back or get a case, either way you're not going to be out any money because they are waiving the restocking fee.

All in all, its an acceptance that the phone is less than perfect and Apple is offering a remedy for those parties that feel violated or wronged by getting something "less than advertised."

Thing is, the iPhone is still the phone of choice for many because of the sheer number of peripherals available and content access, as well as the overall design. You can get an HTC phone thats close, but far less responsive than an iPhone for touch, or a Droid that has a fraction of apps available, or any number of other phones that don't have the connectivity of an Apple device.

You think Motorola or HTC would offer a full refund of the phone with no restocking fee and contract cancel?

I'm still using my old 3GS because I wanted to see what Apple said about the phone today, and to be honest, I may consider upgrading now that Apple's come out and said what it did. I was more concerned with the proximity sensor than the death grip because Orlando has pretty good AT&T reception in the downtown area and a drop of 24 dBm where I live won't drop me past -113 dBm for a call drop.

Why complain in the first place ?,an iphone with a fault is better than 10 other phones of any other manufacturer !

I see so many different phones every day with typically pathetic faults that really should never happen, these being from companies who have been producing handsets far longer than apple have.

Even with this issue the build quality of the iphone whatever model and the excellent fast repair/replacement program puts all other manufacturers to shame.

Im still using a 3gs and nothings gonna stop me from upgrading soon.

Free Bumper or Case. Get on the site early to get your bumper because the cases they are going to provide are probably gonna be crap!

I'm truly amazed at the feedback on here. For those who use a case I understand but those who were sold on the sleek design.. thoughts?

It's like buying a new corvette at the dealership and them saying "Don't drive it that fast or you will need to put a bra on the front bumper"

11:13AM To be clear, Jobs was not happy with our question. "You guys talk to each other a lot."
11:12AM We asked if there was possibility of a software fix... based on the NYT article stating an inside source claimed there could be a fix of that type coming.
Steve had a long answer largely dismissing the question. Then Scott Forstall asked for a mic, and he said that the statement in the Times was "patently false."

Just spoke to an apple rep and he checked with his superviosr because he did not get to hear the press conference. He told me that starting next week on the apple site you can select a bumper or any other case that they have listed for the fix and have it sent. Since I have two iPhones he told me I would probably have to do two separate orders for two cases so you can either get a bumper it's self or any other case they have up that you would like. I'm sure it has to be in the same price range but we will have to wait till next week to find out.
