  • Free Bumpers for All as Steve Jobs Defiantly Praises iPhone 4 at Apple Press Conference

Taking direct aim at the iPhone 4's infamous Death Grip phenomenon by kicking off the event with "the iPhone 4 antenna song" music video, Steve Jobs took the stage at Apple's press conference this morning from the company's campus in Cupertino and promised to answer our longstanding questions about the iPhone 4's antenna dilemma.

"You know, we're not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren't perfect either," Jobs said, first noting the record sales and popularity of the iPhone 4 in an expected moment of self-congratulation. "But we want to make all of our users happy. If you don't know that about Apple, you don't know Apple. We love making our users happy."

"We've been working on this for just 22 days," Jobs said, suggesting that "Antennagate" caught Apple off guard just as it did everyone else. Citing internal tests (because YouTube clips weren't adequate), Jobs said his company "first learned that this doesn't just happen to the iPhone. Nokia, Motorola and other phones have this issue..." Demonstrating how the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the Samsung Omnia II similarly lose bars when held improperly, Steve Jobs clearly wanted to make it known that the iPhone 4 isn't alone in the world of Death Grips.

"This is life in the smartphone world. Phones aren't perfect. It's a challenge for the whole industry. Every phone has weak spots."
"We had a reporting error," Said Jobs, finally speaking to the algorithm and showing off the elaborate $100 million dollar facility in which the iPhone 4 was tested, re-tested, and tested again. "We screwed up on our algorithm. Some of these other phones may be too generous. Our choice was to put the correct algorithm in. And we did that with the new update. You'll still see a drop as we haven't figured out a way around the laws of physics yet."

Apple's chief went on to note that "just one half of one percent" of iPhone 4 users have actually complained about the Death Grip, implying that the media frenzy surrounding the problem is a bigger problem than the "problem" itself. "In the early days of the iPhone 3GS, return rates were 6%," revealed Jobs. "So for the iPhone 4, you think half the people must be returning their phones with what you read online. Well it's 1.7%, less than a third of the 3GS returns."

Finally admitting (but barely) that all is not perfect, Apple's chief executive indicated that, while Apple believes the iPhone 4 is superior to the 3GS antenna, it actually drops more calls per 100 than the 3GS. "We're being transparent," he said, observing that the exact dropped call data can't be revealed as its within AT&T's discretion to withhold that info from competitors. But... "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

"Now when we look at this data, it's hard to escape the conclusion that there is a problem, but that problem is affecting a very small number of users."
So what's the solution, we all collectively ask? Apple's answer: free bumpers for all and iOS 4.0.1, which was released Thursday. "We think this has been so blown out of proportion," Jobs said, verbalizing what his comments implied all along. "It's fun to have a story, but it's not fun on the other side. So here's what we're going to do to make our users happy. The first part is the software update, that fixes the way the bars report and other bugs, that's out now. Second, people said the bumper fixes everything... 'why don't you give everybody a case'? Okay -- we'll give you a free case." Jobs added: "If you got one, we'll give you a refund."

"We're going to send you a free case. We can't make enough bumpers. No way we can make enough in the quarter. So we're going to source some cases and give you a choice."
"And if you're not happy, you can bring the phone back. We'll give you a full refund within 30 days. No restocking fee. We want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund."

At the presentation's conclusion, which ended with a hand-holding sort of moment and proclamation of how much Apple loves it users, Jobs revealed that the white iPhone will begin shipping at the end of July. We're guessing Jobs and crew hope the white iPhone 4 will be the biggest Apple story from now on. But my hunch is that we haven't heard the last of the "Death Grip."

That was a pretty by the numbers press conference with the most obvious outcome. That said, being able to choose from a number of case rather than just the bumper is pretty awesome.

IT starts the end of next week. You have to sign up online and they will send one to you. NOT everyone will get bumpers but they will have different ones for you to choose from. NO ONE will be allowed an in-store pick up. I say go out and buy one and let apple refund your money back later.

Well at least if you are not satisfied you can return it and not pay a 10% restocking fee and also get a refund from AT&T on your contract if you signed a new two year contract.

Exactlly!!! and the sad thing is some don't even own the phone and the rest of people crying "I hate cases" will not return it... If apple shipped every iPhone with the bumpers already on and someone took it off and got a death grip it would be end of story... People asked for a fix they did and also offered a full refund... What will people (some) say?!?! bla bla bla bla bla cry cry cry cry.... Realllly getting old... I say return the damn thing get a different phone and MOVE on....

You buy a car and get a lemon do you keep it or return it? RETARDS!!!!

This isn't about how many folks have or have not called Applecare. No one is calling because SJobs put out an email to all stores not to do anything about it. Plus it is in such high demand that everyone is like well they won't replace it they won't do anything so I will just live with the problem. Start a post so that everyone with this issue starts calling Applecare then we can see his less than 1% go up.

Easy fix free bumpers, I told you this is why this accessory was endorsed at the WWDC. Well if I had the phone it would be in an Otter Box case anyway. But I still am not happy with the BS stats and the easy way out that they took.

Either way when the time comes I guess I will buy a darn iPhone 4 anyway.

Some of you people are not to bright. Read the thru this thread and you would know how to get a free case. And there not all going to be bumpers. They are going to give you a choice.

This is a ruse from Apple. They show you a hand of "fixing antenna issue" with this release, then you release JB, then they release the fix for proximity issue a few days later and brick phones.

Sneaky Jobs...like my VC enemy in 'Nam.

Do you really think this is a bait for a JB release? I can understand your reasoning but that seems a little extreme. But I know that Apple can be pretty hardcore about stuff like this.

But like I thought on first impulse, I hope that 4.01 is the only update that will be out for a while and that a JB is released, especially a spirited version for new bootrom 3GS 4.0 users.

How about all the people that already bought 3rd party cases? And how about all those 3rd party companies that make cases who are not affiliated with Apple (in other words, won't be "free")?

EDIT: Steve-o just answered my question. Sounds pretty arrogant
Will the refund include third party cases?
A: There's a very small number of third party cases out there. So no.
Q: Well it's interesting, there aren't any cases out there, and it's hard to get cases now. If the third party case buyers can produce a receipt, why not give them one?
Steve: It's really simple, if we tell people what our next product is, they stop buying our current products. Sometimes websites buy stolen property and they get out there... and case makers have a history of showing off their new cases for our new products. The case vendors haven't had a history of helping to keep our work under wraps.

Isn't it funny how he first says that 0.55% complained about this (which means roughly 15,000 of the 3M phones), but then says that they cannot possibly build enough bumpers to cover everyone who will be applying for it?

yeah thats BS. People who bought it first quarter of launch are basically given a "**** happens, heres a case" and newer iphone owners get a better design?

Im going to try to use my warranty if these new phones are reported to not have probems.

You are an idiot, MuscleNerd has said countless time that Apple does not make any decisions based on the jailbreak and unlock issues

i felt like Steve was a little child talking. Him blaming other cell phones for also having the same problems was like my children trying to push blame on their siblings instead of owning up to what they do. The only difference is that my kids are in 3rd grade and not a CEO of a major company.

And by the way how many PhD's does it take to change a light bulb. Evidently 18 if they work for Apple.

Notice he didn't mention how many people had the proximity sensor issue. My guess is a lot of folks and I'm sure an update to the proximity sensor will be out fairly quickly. Since I have that issue on my phone I will more than likely want to update ASAP.
