  • Software Fix for Death Grip Still Possible?

A New York Times story, quoting a "person with direct knowledge of the phone’s design," said yesterday that the problem was not strictly a hardware issue but rather a "complex interaction between specialized communications software and the antenna." These statements have led a number of observers to wonder if the so-called Death Grip problem might yet be fixed through a software update. The New York Times's source made it clear, however, that there would be no recall.

The problem is generally considered to be a result of either the antenna or transceiver detuning when you touch both the GSM antenna and the WiFi/Bluetooth one where they come together on the bottom left. Like twisting the frequency knob on your car radio, the signal gets worse when it's out of tune. As has been repeatedly noted, the human body has this effect on all handheld radios, but it's dealt with to a greater or lesser degree through software. According to the person the New York Times spoke to, the unusual placement of the iPhone 4's antennas "exposed a longstanding weakness in the basic communications software inside Apple’s phones," which caused the reception issues rather than a hardware flaw per se. If this is true, then it's possible for the problem to be fixed in a future firmware release. The source, however, didn't specifically allude to any such release coming soon or whether it was even in the works.

Apple will presumably outline their response to the issue at their press conference, at 10am Pacific Time today. Though nothing is yet known about what will be discussed, the New York Times report says that Apple will not announce a recall of the phone, an assertion that is echoed up by a separate anonymous source being quoted by the Wall Street Journal.

    Stay detuned.

Apple released ios 4.0.1 yetterday. That didn't fix the problem. Every other phone hidden their antenna for a reason. Apple took a bold move. Too bad it didn't work

"So the heart of the problem is, smartphones have issues, and we made it easy to exploit the issue by showing people where to hold the phone to cover the antenna"

HAHAHA...we pointed out the issue...so it's all good! done and done.

its a fix and if you don't like it return it! STOP COMPLAINING... If they recalled it people would be like... WHAT I HAVE TO WAIT? geezzzz people... What if Apple sold the phone with the bumper already on it? And you took it off?

Really getting tired of all the cry babies... RETURN IT!!!!

Now we can move forward and get the JB... That is the real issue!!!

Might I ad 4.1 seems to run a bit faster than 4.0 not sure about 4.0.1 because I am using the beta 4.1

3rd party cases as well...now I'm not sure which they will include but I hope they're some good ones. Bumpers are useless for me:

Apple-only headphones (very small hole for the cable)
      No 3rd party USB cables
      Silent button hard to reach

No ****. If you don't like it return it. No one is forcing anyone to keep it. If you choose to keep then you have no reason to *****. Anything else you buy if it has an issue or you don't like you return it. Why should this be any different. I think some people just like to complain no matter what.

I for one don't have any reception issues at all and in fact have only dropped one call since I've got the phone on release day and literally dropped at least one call a day with my 3G.

If people are going to update their software then I urge them to lay their iPhone on the desk while connected to their computer and don't move the phone at all while updating and see if the signal has more bars after the update.

To those saying the devteam should wait until this firmware is released.

That logic is stupid. However I respect the devteam's decision to wait for 4.0.1 since it was being released soon, which it has. The devteam waited for 4.0.1 for no new updates If they wait for 4.1, it's going to keep continuing, why not wait for 4.2 and 5.0 etc. It's just dumb. Let the devteam release the jailbreak and unlock and they will help work on p0sixninja''s boot exploit or either find a new exploit.

That's what I liked about geohot. Last year when the 3GS came out the dev team kept holding the jailbreak like they are doing now and geohot publicly said to them that's not how the cat and mouse game goes and he then released blackra1n and blacksn0w. Everyone praised him. The same guy who stood up for the community, those people chased him away. We lost our best hacker. I hope he returns soon or maybe save the day.
