  • Reports: Apple Executives Unsure of Plan, Announcement Through Late Thursday

Although we are only minutes away from learning what course of action Apple will take in addressing and, hopefully, repairing the iPhone 4 reception issues that have plagued the device since its release late last month, there are mixed expectations among many Wall Street analysts and industry observers regarding what specific steps the company will take to finally put this corporate and consumer nightmare to rest.

Not only are analysts confounded by what Apple can or should do, there are reports that executives at the company wrestled with the exact course of action and careful wording of the announcement through late Thursday. As a result of this after-hours deliberation (perhaps a process that will continue right until the press conference actually begins), the Wall Street Journal is quoting one analyst who sees a “higher probability” than ever of a voluntary recall or in-store repair of the phone.

An across the board recall of the iPhone 4 is no longer on the "highly anticipated" list of most analysts. RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky says Apple will use the media today to not only address the current model's antenna flaws but also to acknowledge design improvements that will eliminate the problem for those purchasing the handset from this point forward. In other words, expect the looming spotlight consumption to be as self-serving for Apple as possible.

Gleacher & Company analyst Brian Marshall has much simpler expectations from Apple. Marshall predicts that Apple will bluntly apologize for the frustrations born of the glitch, mitigate the severity of the problem, and roll out a free bumper program (via Apple gift card) to iPhone 4 customers experiencing the "Death Grip."

Apple's much-anticipated press conference begins today at 10:00 am PST, 1:00 pm EST.

Yeah I'm so tired of taking it in and out of the bumper to use it with my car stereo. Any non oem apple connector doesn't work with any kind of case. Going to attempt to dremel out part of the bumper

Well it seems as thou Steve Jobs is trying to use his Jedi mind tricks by saying " there is no problem. the data tells us its all in your head and you are all nuts"

The iPhone 4 has a 1.7% return rate compared to the 3GS return rate of 6%. I think this is because people were holding out on returning their iPhone 4 to see what Apple says. It would be interesting to see what the return rate is in another month.

These numbers can all be fabricated as well, this is disturbing.

Most of it is based on user reported complaints. I'd say a very small amount of people that experience these issues complained through Apple.

What is crazy is half of the time its not even about a call actually dropping, its that when just holding the damn phone 3G speeds take a nosedive to crap.

The reason the apple care call numbers are so low Mr. Jobs is because no one had a signal to call you about it and if they did, their iPhone dropped the call because they had to hold the phone...lol

      free bumpers for everyone!

fvk their going with the bumper fix...

guess Im goin to get my refund (if u already have a bumper you get a refund, better not be a damn itunes giftcard)

I still think this is why they created bumpers in the first place...

Apple is already in a big mess. I hope they doesn't make up stupid excuses. That would make them look very bad.

I don't have an iPhone 4 but if I did I wouldn't accept a free case as a solution. He didn't say much at all about the proximity sensor so if I had one I'd be taking it back today after seeing this.

Steve said .5% iPhone 4 owners called, so what about the ones who DIDNT call and have the problem? Ya probably ALOT more, plus a free f*cking case?!?! Apple has some nerves giving just a free case, FIX the phone DON'T cover up the mistakes. Also if it IS .5% then why the hell can they not make enough bumpers?!?! I mean the DEFINITELY make over 15000 cases EVERYDAY. They probably gonna go to some Chinese seller on eBay and purchase 100,000 crappy silicone cases and throw them at the masses. Plus I've been through 2 freaking iPhone 4's already the recent one was last week, and guess what it has the reception problem aswell. Great job Apple, cover up your mistake and make up numbers.

I Dremel'd all the 3rd-party connectors including the connector on my Pioneer CD IB100II car ipod adapter. That actually fixed my 30GB iPod classic because now I get sound out of both the left and right speakers. My iPod fell one day while connected to the adapter and it yanked the connector from the socket in the iPod and the left side audio wouldn't sound unless the connector was set perfectly in socket. By shaving 2-3mm of plastic off the connector not only does it fit better in the ipod and fixing that audio issue, but it slides into the iPhone 4 bumper perfectly making contact in the socket (so no more annoying having to remove the bumper). I was concerned that Dremeling the bumper would compromise the integrity\longetivity of the bumper.
