  • "Brute Force" Antenna Fix To Be Revealed Tomorrow?

A Wall Street analyst claims that his overseas sources are telling him that Apple has decided on a fix for the antenna problem plaguing the iPhone 4. Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Rodman & Renshaw Capital Group, says that what's being called an "internal bumper" is being added to new phones in order to better insulate the transceiver. According to the Kumar, suppliers in Asia have told him that the change is causing a slowdown in production, which has led the online Apple Store increase to shipping estimates to three weeks.

Kumar told AppleInsider that the fix - which he believes will be revealed at Apple's press conference tomorrow - is "from an engineering perspective... more of a brute force than an elegant addition." Rather than doing a full recall and redesigning the circuitry completely to eliminate the problem, Kumar asserts, Apple is opting to do a "quick fix" to make its customer happy. A more elegant solution, he says, will be implemented on a CDMA version of the iPhone later this year. Kumar has been insisting for months that an iPhone model compatible with Verizon's network will be released later this year.

Kumar's thinking is that Apple is going public with this fix now, ahead of its quarterly earnings report next Tuesday, to try and limit the financial damage of the news. Apple's stock has dropped almost 30 points from its post iPhone 4 launch high, and financial analysts have pegged the cost of a total recall at about $1.5 billion US. According to Mike Abramsky of the Royal Bank of Canada, this would mean about 40 cents a share less profit for the quarter. Analysts expect Apple to announce profit of $3.80 per share.

I have a case so I don't give two craps about what happens. If they do a recall I will not exchange mine. People who r demanding a perfect phone buy a go phone I hear they make phone calls.

I'm missed a total of 7 late night Booty calls because of this death grip issue. Is apple going to call these females and apologize to them for me.

Aw. Another day in the life of an iPhone user.

How are all the droid users doing these days?

And what about the proximity sensor issue ? What are they doing about that ? Should i just put a dutch tape over the sensor while I am on a phone call and then just take the duct tape off if i need the screen back ??? I hope the jailbreak community has something to rescue us some kind of tweak to the sensor

I can't wait for Verizon to get the iPhone and see their network come to a screeching halt and then all the AT&T haters will realize just how challenging the iPhone game is.

wow thats interesting, the only thing i'd say is att has always had complaints about there network coverage, even before the iphone so they cant put it entirely on the iphone's data demands. I've used both and for me att coverage was horrible in my area so it wasn't even an option for very long. I had to cancel but kept my iphone, i realy tried to stick with them but it was nearly impossible, I even went as far as fwding my calls to my home phone just to make sure i got them. Not bashing att thats just my personal experience, i'm sure it works great for others. verizon has good coverage in my area but I want an iphone not a droid, at least at the moment. So my only option was to unlock and use my 3gs on tmobile, its ok I would love the 3g speeds but there was no 3g for att in my area anyway so i'm not missing anything. With that said I would love to see if verizon can handle the iphone, if they can great i'll switch. I don't work or have any loyalties to any of these companies I could care less if att lost the iphone. It would be nice to have options for different carriers, like I said att works better for some and verizon works better for some. If they both had the iphone then everyone, well most would be happy them we could start hearing arguments over who's iphone is better because they're on a better network... I can see it already

What im worried about is, Apple released 4.0.1 when they were supposed to release 4.1 as that was the beta. They have something up their sleeves.

And i don't want to risk it. I will keep a phone with a case on it to be able to JB and unlock compared to having a New phone with no JB and unlock. For those of you saying a jailbreak will be released after the new phone is released you currently are not up to date with the JB scene. The current exploit the dev team has is a USERLAND exploit which apple already knows about because it is the 3.1.3 and ipad 3.2 untethered jailbreak. And it can be easily patched by them.

I completely agree with you. This is my 3rd Iphone. Never needed or wanted a case or protector and don't want to start now because I need to put a band-aid of product to hide a defect.

I know others are hating to hear the complaining going on from people like me, either because they got lucky, yes lucky, and have no problems with their new ip4 (ie: antenna, proximty sensor) or just handle problems like these a little better. But I have both and I'm trying to patiently wait to hear what Steve says about it tomorrow. If I don't like it, I'll call AT&T and ship it back and wait until I get the all clear on a new phone with a fix. Simple as that.

As I said before, this is my second ip4 and both have the proximity sensor issue. So it's not a random as one might thing. None of the fixes i've read from others works. I've restored and reset all settings to no avail. At this point, that problem takes precedence to the antenna issue in my book. Putting someone on mute, hold and/or calling a third party can only be put up with but so many times.

But with that being said... I like how in the video someone posted here a page or two back that shows how now the iphone4 shows 1 bar, but HE STILL can't surf the net. lol. Yep, Apple hiding the "no bars" by showing us 1 bar now. Just awesome.

Why didn't you quote the rest of the article?

Kumar was criticized last year after he noted that iPhone sales in China were "disappointing" before the device was even on sale. Also, in January of this year, he said he was told that the iPad would be available on the Verizon network through a subsidy -- a prediction that proved false. However, last fall, Kumar also correctly stated that Google would release its own custom-built handset, which came true when the Nexus One was announced.

Last year, Kumar told AppleInsider that a CDMA-only iPhone with a chipset from Qualcomm will be released for the Verizon network in the U.S. in 2010. He said a new dual-mode chip from Qualcomm will not be available in time for a summer 2010 launch for the new iPhone.
So basically, this guy has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to Apple. And we're taking this as news? Come to think of it, isn't this the same guy that told people that Steve Ballmer would be making an appearance in WWDC? Has he gotten anything right?

You are correct sir. This guy has been "dead wrong" on every pretense possible. Tomorrow is coming very soon and we will all know the facts.

This is the same thing I have thought all along. Now hopefully they will see that on opening day the activation process can burn down a network if it is popular. Maybe that is why Apple let the pre-orders out early to help sooth the pain of this years problems.

Any way; we are a data hungry society now and no matter what network it is on the one with the most popular smart phone is going to be hit hard with data intensive congestion. Be prepared all networks.

No, YOU are not up to date with the JB scene. The exploit Comex is working on now is a second userland exploit that he has found. It is similar to the original Spirit exploit he found, but is an entirely new exploit itself.
