  • Steve Jobs Knew of iPhone 4 Antenna Problems During 2009 Design Phase

Speaking truth to power is never easy. But, last year, one intrepid iPhone 4 engineer told Apple chief Steve Jobs that the design of the iPhone 4 was ripe for antenna and reception problems. Shortly before the June 2010 launch of the updated Apple smartphone, executives were warned once again of the device's intermittently fatal reception flaw.

Bloomberg News reported Thursday that Ruben Caballero, a "senior engineer and antenna expert" with Apple, notified his company of the design weaknesses that would produce the widespread call dropping and service interruptions via the "Death Grip" phenomenon. Make no mistake about it, Steve Jobs knew of the problem during the design phase of the iPhone 4. In other words, the complaints that have since leveled the Cupertino tech-giant shouldn't have come as such a surprise.

Apple’s industrial design team, led by Jonathan Ive, submitted several iPhone designs before Jobs and other executives settled on the bezel antenna, said the person familiar with the company’s design. Caballero, the antenna expert, voiced concern in early planning meetings that it might lead to dropped calls and presented a serious engineering challenge, the person said.
Apple's response to the Bloomberg report? As expected, there is no response. And Apple won't let Caballero talk either. Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, refused to "make Caballero available for an interview." Bloomberg also noted that Caballero "didn’t respond to a call and an e-mail seeking comment." When Apple cracks the whip...

In response to the negative rock e'm, sock 'em media attention given to the iPhone 4 this week, Apple will hold a scheduled press conference in Cupertino tomorrow that will focus exclusively on the iPhone 4 and the lingering reception issues. The press conference will begin Friday, July 16th at 10:00 am PST.

1000% agree.....If i was a broker who had clients invested in Apple, I'd be paying extra special attention to what news breaks tomorrow, just in case a much needed vacation is all of a sudden long overdue

I respectfully disagree. If I want an iPhone, I'm buying an iPhone. It is the entire point of consumerism.

This is, of course, assuming the antenna problem was unknown at the time of purchase (which it was).

Apple knew if they delayed they might lose some potential buyers...apparently Stevie boy thought he could just ignore everyone and we'd just buy a case and call it good....WRONG!!!

Yup..some other company is going to pick up where Apple left off and design a phone JUST LIKE the iPhone 4 - minus the antenna issues. And this product is also going to have the same quality design, development, construction, high quality materials, and elegant aesthetics. Brilliant idea!

Look...if this antenna issues turns out to be something Apple knew about then they shouldn't have come out with it with this design flaw. BUT to want to see the company fold over a mistake like this, with all their other successes NOTWITHSTANDING is a moronic thing to think or even say. I LOVE MY iPHONE 4, just like I loved my iPhone 3GS and 3G models that came before it. And every time Apple has worked to improved the product for us, the consumers. No doubt they will do so again.

If you're not a fan of the company or their products, don't buy from them. Simply put. But if you think there are other companies out there that CARE ABOUT YOU, the consumer, more than Apple and put as much thought into the design, research and development of their products (minus 1 hiccup here or there)...you're an idiot. Period. And I don't do this to call names. But it ANGERS me when people in a FREE SOCIETY with OPEN & COMPETITIVE COMMERCE disparage a company who most of the time do the RIGHT THING. If you evoke miserable thoughts and ideas in posts on a messageboard that are so out of whack with whatever the solution could be, it speaks volumes about you and your beliefs.

Sound harsh? Well that's EXACTLY how your post sounded in response to this possible design flaw by Apple. Get my point?!
this has to be one of the better "riot acts" i've ever read on this site. Clear, consice, mostly no name calling or questioning intelegence. well done sir. Well done. I dont agree with everything you said, but still well done.

This antenna madness is so f***n annoying. Ok get the point can we talk about something else. Its like talking about GeoHotz sayin bye to the community. Never stops. Np Sh*t he knew hes the cheif things go through him first before it is finalized and published. Obviosly apple dont give a sh*t about quality. Money is more important these days like everywhere you go money is top priority screw quality.

I agree... nicely done. I know Apple and Steve Jobs will get this corrected. My phone works great, but i do have the bumper case. I have had the Iphone since the beginning (2G,3G and Iphone4). Apple didn't make this far as a business with junk. The Iphone 4 is a great phone. It has an "issue" right now which i believe will be rectified. The Iphone is the only phone that I will own. I have seen the competition and nothing compares to the touch feature of the Iphone (Ipad and Ipod touch also). Other companies have there own issue with their products also. To sum this all up, I believe in Apple and I think they will fix this "issue" and move on. Bring on the LTE IPhone!!!!

It's still amazing to me how days before the pre-order launch the hype for this phone was insane, and now a month later there's an uprising over what a dud this phone is in the reception dept. From one extreme to the next. Hilarious. Anyway, I can still show-off my i4 to people so they can marvel at it, and when I need to make a call just take my 3GS out.

I so agree. Apple clearly is only interested in $$$$ and could care less about the quality and design of their products. And their stock price, consumer loyalty, and years of MOSTLY FREE and proven customer service and support definitely highlights your point.

By the way...do you have any thoughts on global warming or how we can solve the crisis in the Gulf, per chance? Would love to hear your thoughts on those issues.

      ...to those in the know.

Also, just noticed...your tag name is DELUSION950? Just curious as to how you came up with the name for yourself?

I doubt this press conference will solve the issue or remedy it in any manor. I mean yeah their $100 iphone early buyers of 2yrs ago was a nice gesture, but c'mon it was a apple gift card so they didn't lose anything. They will most likely do the same thing again IMO or something along that affect.

I think steve really wanted to take the innovation that apple's brought into the mobile world to a new level... Innovating new ways to hold that technology.. I mean how long have we been holding our phones the same way?? He thought that the "all new" iphone 4 deserved a more worthy "all new" hold..

LOL... maybe Steve will show us a demenstration tomorrow (for those who have the "issue") of how to hold the Iphone 4. Maybe there is an app in the app store for the instructions of how to hold your Iphone 4, like a tutorial... I am going to check now... " **** where's my wifi signal at????
