  • Steve Jobs Knew of iPhone 4 Antenna Problems During 2009 Design Phase

Speaking truth to power is never easy. But, last year, one intrepid iPhone 4 engineer told Apple chief Steve Jobs that the design of the iPhone 4 was ripe for antenna and reception problems. Shortly before the June 2010 launch of the updated Apple smartphone, executives were warned once again of the device's intermittently fatal reception flaw.

Bloomberg News reported Thursday that Ruben Caballero, a "senior engineer and antenna expert" with Apple, notified his company of the design weaknesses that would produce the widespread call dropping and service interruptions via the "Death Grip" phenomenon. Make no mistake about it, Steve Jobs knew of the problem during the design phase of the iPhone 4. In other words, the complaints that have since leveled the Cupertino tech-giant shouldn't have come as such a surprise.

Apple’s industrial design team, led by Jonathan Ive, submitted several iPhone designs before Jobs and other executives settled on the bezel antenna, said the person familiar with the company’s design. Caballero, the antenna expert, voiced concern in early planning meetings that it might lead to dropped calls and presented a serious engineering challenge, the person said.
Apple's response to the Bloomberg report? As expected, there is no response. And Apple won't let Caballero talk either. Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, refused to "make Caballero available for an interview." Bloomberg also noted that Caballero "didn’t respond to a call and an e-mail seeking comment." When Apple cracks the whip...

In response to the negative rock e'm, sock 'em media attention given to the iPhone 4 this week, Apple will hold a scheduled press conference in Cupertino tomorrow that will focus exclusively on the iPhone 4 and the lingering reception issues. The press conference will begin Friday, July 16th at 10:00 am PST.

Interesting theory. But i think with the heat that apple is under with looming congressional hearings and class action law suits, the last thing apple needs is the SEC poking around. Im pretty sure intentionally tanking ur stock is a major voilation, frowned upon by the powers that be....

i think this story is false i highly doubt steve would have released a designed flawed product if he knew way prior to release that there was a problem. guess we will see come tomorrow whats what and whats gonna be done about it. hope the white ones wont have any problems as that is what im waiting for

Im not saying I'm ok with it, free bumpers would be the absolute bare minimum. really hoping for free replacements, or an extension of the 30 day return policy. Totally agree with you on the bait n switch angle. But since apple has been dead set against even acknowledging an issue even exists (and as jackass stubborn as stevie j has been in the past) free bumpers may be all that apple will do...But ur absolutely right. 300 for a phone that requires an additional case, thats for the birds!!!!!!!!!

Common sense tells me this is not true for manny reasons.

And before you start i am not 1 of those apple fanboy and i do believe in the reception problem.
But i do not believe apple and/or steve knew about this problem.

This problem already and will probably cost apple alot of money and if you had this knowledge beforehand they know it would cost them dearly.

So again common sense tells me this story is a load of....
I am an fan boy, but let me clarify, a fan boy knows what is the right thing, as far as apple products goes, I scream if something is not right.

I bought 3 iPhone 4 and using since then, yes one thing I did before I have received my fedex, I order few cases for iPhone 4 from handheld.com and knock on woods, I have no problem.

And there will be thousands happy iPhone 4 user, who has No issue.

Now let me explain what my little brain understand from all this.

How many people login to their favorite blog site or news site for breaking news until unless bloggers create one. So it is less genuine problem, but made a big freaking jumbo size problem by these news and blog sites.

But they are not completely lying about it either.

1.7 million phone in less then 24 hours, that is the core issue and the biggest ever problem for apple rather a milestone achievement.

Now think yourself how many company on earth will sale 1.7 unit in 24 hrs. NADA,NONE

And remember it is electronic so i bet some units will have poor component or just some component is not working well enough.
Now imagine for 1 second, what if apple would have sell these numbers in few month like they did with 1st iPhone,

I bet there have been no issue. At the end I just wanna say " thank you Apple for making such a wonderful phone which not even make me do calling but now I am able to see my 6 month old on face to face while I forced to travel for business for 2 week"

Do you remember the Keynote of the Iphone 4? do you remember the bumpers? I really think the bumpers where developed to resolve the antena isssue, It's not a coincidense that they launch this product with the new iphone. Its a shame they did that, but what the hell every fan wants the new iphone and they will buy it including me LOL

I look at the bright side of this. Steve jobs made a very critical error in judgment. I just hope apple learns their lesson about rushing products into production. Hopefully now we will only get the quality products we expect from apple. I don't like the way they handled the situation, but I'll give everyone a second chance. It's that third one that's hard to get.

an aesthetically (sp?) pleasing external antenna was/is a great idea in theory. Apple just tanked the execution. Not saying they can't/won't get it right eventually....

Absolutely. They have no idea how bad their reputation is being weighed all on tomorrow's press event, not to mention their stock.

They deserve to get sued. If Steve Jobs knew about this, then he should have prolonged the release instead of being an *** and release a faulty product.

It's comments like this that drive me crazy. In which world do you live in? Yup..some other company is going to pick up where Apple left off and design a phone JUST LIKE the iPhone 4 - minus the antenna issues. And this product is also going to have the same quality design, development, construction, high quality materials, and elegant aesthetics. Brilliant idea!

Look...if this antenna issues turns out to be something Apple knew about then they shouldn't have come out with it with this design flaw. BUT to want to see the company fold over a mistake like this, with all their other successes NOTWITHSTANDING is a moronic thing to think or even say. I LOVE MY iPHONE 4, just like I loved my iPhone 3GS and 3G models that came before it. And every time Apple has worked to improved the product for us, the consumers. No doubt they will do so again.

If you're not a fan of the company or their products, don't buy from them. Simply put. But if you think there are other companies out there that CARE ABOUT YOU, the consumer, more than Apple and put as much thought into the design, research and development of their products (minus 1 hiccup here or there)...you're an idiot. Period. And I don't do this to call names. But it ANGERS me when people in a FREE SOCIETY with OPEN & COMPETITIVE COMMERCE disparage a company who most of the time do the RIGHT THING. If you evoke miserable thoughts and ideas in posts on a messageboard that are so out of whack with whatever the solution could be, it speaks volumes about you and your beliefs.

Sound harsh? Well that's EXACTLY how your post sounded in response to this possible design flaw by Apple. Get my point?!
