  • Steve Jobs Knew of iPhone 4 Antenna Problems During 2009 Design Phase

Speaking truth to power is never easy. But, last year, one intrepid iPhone 4 engineer told Apple chief Steve Jobs that the design of the iPhone 4 was ripe for antenna and reception problems. Shortly before the June 2010 launch of the updated Apple smartphone, executives were warned once again of the device's intermittently fatal reception flaw.

Bloomberg News reported Thursday that Ruben Caballero, a "senior engineer and antenna expert" with Apple, notified his company of the design weaknesses that would produce the widespread call dropping and service interruptions via the "Death Grip" phenomenon. Make no mistake about it, Steve Jobs knew of the problem during the design phase of the iPhone 4. In other words, the complaints that have since leveled the Cupertino tech-giant shouldn't have come as such a surprise.

Apple’s industrial design team, led by Jonathan Ive, submitted several iPhone designs before Jobs and other executives settled on the bezel antenna, said the person familiar with the company’s design. Caballero, the antenna expert, voiced concern in early planning meetings that it might lead to dropped calls and presented a serious engineering challenge, the person said.
Apple's response to the Bloomberg report? As expected, there is no response. And Apple won't let Caballero talk either. Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, refused to "make Caballero available for an interview." Bloomberg also noted that Caballero "didn’t respond to a call and an e-mail seeking comment." When Apple cracks the whip...

In response to the negative rock e'm, sock 'em media attention given to the iPhone 4 this week, Apple will hold a scheduled press conference in Cupertino tomorrow that will focus exclusively on the iPhone 4 and the lingering reception issues. The press conference will begin Friday, July 16th at 10:00 am PST.

sell em now and buy you a call option on the low end for delivery around the end of friday and sell em on monday...make money money money!!!!!!

Their stock lost $5 billion on tuesday and will lose about that if not more depending on fridays announcement, not to mention they've lost $3.42 Billion today and currently $11.79 Billion on the week as a whole (their stock has dropped $12.96/share [4.94%] so far on the week). I dont see a rise in price for their stock on friday but yet more of the same. Dont be surprised to see a bullish run come monday morning though..........Apple's stock will be a bumpy road as we proceed thru the rest of the year and see how all of their congressional hearing and class action lawsuit threats unfold along with their iPhone 4 debacle (which I still think they were forced to release early which is why they had production issues and design flaws resulting from the production phase).

Not on the scale of the Banks or BP oil but yet another large corporation willingly turning a blind eye at the expense of their customers. This will be interesting because Apple is not an absolute necessity to our way of life like the other two.

Yeah, come to think of it... that is pretty random for Apple to suddenly make a "case/bumper" for their iPhone. And then push the bumpers during the keynote as much as they did? Then again, the iPad case was available at launch... who knows. Either Apple is realizing the market for cases, or they are not makin' em like they used to.

I mean come on, did you guys not see this problem when he was announcing the phone when he was comparing the 3GS vs. 4 and the 3GS was dominating? My first thought was hmm interesting it might be the engineering.

A week later the news are saying to hold your phone another way... or buy a bumper.

I went to the apple store on 5th avenue in Manhattan in NY and Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island NY and the employees told me that white iphone4 was delayed because it had design issues. This was said before the antenna issue came into light. The company knew about it but it was all a corporate strategy. How corporate strategies work, watch an Indian movie called "Corporate" You will know how companies keep you in dark. Make sure you get the one with subtitles lolz!!!

He's not going to talk about why he released it with this problem being known beforehand...

      Gonna beat around the bush!

Were all looking at tomorrow the wrong way. What better way to jump on Ophra's bandwagon about being on the phone while driving. Maybe he will spin this and start making commercials stating this is truly the first hands free devise available. Use your hands and it won't have reception.

It's hard to imagine that Apple would not know about the antenna issue, early in the design phase. Even a non-electical engineer knows that when you touch the antenna of anything the signal is affected.

They probably have rolls of "iDuct-Tape" ready to deploy for just such an emergency.

please fix original post to say PDT, not PST

it's Pacific Daylight Time right now, not Standard

Note that during summer daylight saving time/summer time is observed, and PDT is used instead.
      PST – Pacific Standard Time

or just say PT (pacific Time)
you can see in the original link that they also just say PT lol

I haven't done so. I was waiting for the white version to be released and now that all of this is out. I don't see myself buying a new iphone to replace my 3GS until its properly fixed. Not only can all the guys running iphone4's not make calls but, they also have no jailbreak.

No bitesms, no sbsettings, no winterboard, no thankyou.

like I said in another thread apple wanted to capitalise on the issue by getting everybody to buy a bumper, I'm happy it's backfired

You and a whole buch of DROID users......... we will all be enjoying this one! The hits just keep comming with the iPhone. So glad that I can just sit back and watch with my HTC DROID, instead of wonder when they will make up some un-kept promise to fix, or until they can try to sell another bad apple.
