(b) it's a different color phone. Just release an official statement to the media explaining the details and presto......if they absolutely have to hold a press conference for that then they might as well explain their lack of acknowledgement on the reception issue.

(c) I know obviously the sales won't be in the toilet......I just wish they were because of the way Apple has handled this situation with regards to the consumer

What if apple recalls the phone. Redesigns the phone to have these black bumpers on as a permanent design that is unremovable. And sells the phone that way?

I didn't think this was that difficult to understand, but allow me to reword it: If the answer is free bumpers, I'm not buying an iPhone 4. Because I don't want a case of any sort.

And no, hot gluing a permanent bumper on woud not be acceptable. Friends of mine an myself discussed the possibilities of a clear coating to go over the trouble areas. That would be a good fix. I'd even consider DIY'ing it if I alrealy bought one.

My Incipio Feather case when on allows me to hold my iPhone 4 anyway I like without any death grip signal loss issues.

That being said I think that Apple will extend the refund policy maybe for defective iPhone 4's and then announce iOS 4.1 & the White iPhone release date to get set and confirmed.

If it's NOT free ,Steve said hold it like this and buy my $30 bumper that covers up the flaw.

My guess is this is just gonna be your standard "we care" type deal, where Apple lets us know that they take these issues very seriously and that they're looking into them and that customer care is their number 1 issue, etc. I doubt there will be any hint of a recall or free bumpers or even the direct statement that they may have made mistakes. I think this is just damage control, plain and simple. A little show for the media, but offering no real solutions for the consumer.

The one real thing I could see them actually doing is extending the return window for the iphone 4 from 30 to 60 days. That "solution" allows dissatisfied customers to return their phones past 30 days but also continues to send Apple's passive aggressive message to the world: if there's any problem with the iphone 4, it's your problem, not ours.

Trust me on this, this thing is damage control, to keep the media at bay before Apple announces their quarterly earnings next week. They need something to distract the media, so they're sufficiently dazzled by Apple's amazing 2nd quarter sales numbers, rather than Apple's amazing problems with the iphone 4.

1. People need to stop posting that their phone works.
2. People need to stop posting to buy a bumper
3. People need to stop relating a new firmware to this issue.

You buy a phone, it should work as advertised without having to buy an accessory. This shows 100% that Apple knows there is a hardware problem, and the new firmware is made to mask it by showing reception differently. They really may have mapped the bars wrong in the first place, but that is not the reception issue. There are a small number of people having a problem compared to total phones sold, so I don't think it's going to cost them $1.5 billion to fix. They would simply swap for a new phone, fix the returned phone, and be able to sell the fixed/returned phone, and still not lose $1.5 billion. They will "lose" more than that down the road if they choose to do nothing, though. I, for one, would take a free bumper, but I don't use cases. I might just use it if I know I'm in a situation where the phone may be dropped.

Like I said......if there is a massive wave of customers returning their phone nationwide then I'd be willing to bet Apple would jump on this issue in a heartbeat.

I think if that happens on the grounds of reception issues, Apple would just turn around and sue AT&T for the damages and try to blame it on them.

Then AT&T would drop them and Apple would lose all those potential future iPhone owners. Not to mention Apple would have to prove AT&T is the culprit....and so far nothing has pointed to that.

I highly doubt AT&T could survive without the iPhone customers. Although many people do use the iPhone on other carriers, the majority users are still committed to AT&T through contract.

If AT&T were to drop Apple, AT&T would see such high drops in revenue within the next 1-2 years that it probably would not be able to sustain any profitable business.
