  • iOS 4.1 Beta Now Available To Developers

Could this be it? The infamous iOS 4.1 update?! You bet it is! Now available through Apple's Developer Center, iOS 4.1 Beta is available for download. This is news we have all been anticipating for some time now, but the question here is, what exactly are we getting in iOS 4.1? Will our antenna issues be solved, or will they simply be "masked"?

The releases notes don't go into detail about any fixes, however they do state that support for the iOS 4 preview version of Game Center will be phased out soon. There is some discussion about renaming some files, and some string changes, but nothing extremely interesting.

UPDATE: Reports of users experiencing no change in signal quality for those that have been having the "death grip" problem.

UPDATE: It appears that the iOS 4.1 update includes the signal bar changes that Apple had promised that "will adjust how signal strength bars are calculated and displayed." This includes making the bars larger than they were before so it's easier to identify the signal strength

The change will adopt a recently recommended formula from AT&T that will more accurately display actual signal strength at any given time. The update will also increase the size of the smaller bars (1, 2, and 3) to make them easier to see.
As expected, the modem firmware has also now been updated to 02.07.01. This means: JAILBREAKERS AND UNLOCKERS NEED TO STAY AWAY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! Remember all that hard work planetbeing just showed us? Do yourself a favor and do not update yet, so that you too may utilize the unlock method he has found in the future.

What might be particularly exciting to most of our readers, is that this release, once public, could mean that our next Jailbreak Tool will be unleashed upon us all. However, I wouldn't get too excited yet, this is just the SDK Beta. Once this baby goes public, keep your eyes peeled for an iOS 4.0 Jailbreak. So that means, REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR SHSH BLOBS!

I agree, you will not see 4.0.1. 4.1 will fix ALL of the 4g problems!!!

Since updating to 4.1 Beta, I have not seen above 3 bars, where I usually have 5. Also, if I "deathgrip" or bridge the antennas, I lose a bar and it goes to 2 bars.

This is in my office in the middle of my city, where I usually always have 5.

I will report back later when I get home. Usually deathgripping it from my house, makes me lose all my bars and makes me drop the call if I am on it.

Not quite sure i agree with this. If Apple did intend to release iOS 4.1 developer tools just so Dev-Team can release the jailbreak, and subsequently patching it in a ninja 4.0.1, it could be months before the real 4.1 would be pushed through.

By following your philosophy, the Dev Team should never release a jailbreak/unlock because Apple is always working on a new FW.

You really think they can wait 2 weeks to make an official release? I doubt it, hopefully by the middle of next week at the latest.

we're on the same boat and already have my SHSH blobs saved.

For all you people thinking a jailbreak is coming soon you might as well put it on hold. They might as well wait because apple will be releasing the game center in another future update and apple will patch the 4.1 hole. So since we waited for this update might as well wait for the next one to right. Apple is smart! Just keep releasing updates and adding features that were left out!

I'm pretty sure you can get a new iPhone if you have a proximity sensor problem. Just go to Apple and check.

      Sad but true.

People should stop spreading rumors that the team is "waiting" on 4.0.1 or 4.1 when comex never stated that it was ready to begin with.

      Uh-oh.

      From Macstories:

As RazorianFly reports, Apple might have added a digital watermark for jailbroken devices, too:

“Also, iOS 4.1 has new encryption technology, that will constantly check if iPhone or iPod touch, have been jailbroken. This is done by digital watermark that appears when iOS is jailbroken, and this watermark cannot be removed, even if reverted to unjailbroken status. Apple store employees will check for the watermark during iPhone service.”
