  • The Consumer Response to iPhone 4 Problems? Buy More iPhones!



    Generally, when a company's product gets beaten up from virtually every source in almost any direction you turn, there's a good chance that sales would be negatively impacted by such a reality. Well, if you're Apple and your product is the iPhone 4, you're not like the rest of us. In fact, if the results of the latest Changewave survey are correct, the iPhone 4 could do no wrong.

    "First the Apple iPhone: We see a huge leap in demand going forward, with 52 per cent of those planning to buy a smartphone intending to purchase an iPhone in the next 90 days -- up from 31 per cent last year."
    Let's put that information into perspective. Even though Apple's closest competitors in the smartphone marketplace are certainly loving every bit of negative attention the iPhone 4 and its corresponding "Death Grip" are receiving, they are still largely failing to capitalize on this perceived but apparently imagined Apple vulnerability. Only 6 percent of would-be smartphone buyers in the next 90-days are considering buying a BlackBerry.

    The Android-powered HTC smartphone category sees 19 percent interest.
    That's pretty impressive for Apple. But, unfortunately for the folks in Cupertino, added sales probably mean additional iPhone 4s that will either require repair or some degree of attention down the road. On Wednesday, RBC Capital Markets Analyst Mike Abramsky estimated that every additional week that Apple fails to offer a Death Grip fix possibly tacks on another $200 million to the price tag of an eventual solution or product recall in the future.

      As much as I was looking forward to the fourth gen iPhone, I have held off so far due to not only the design issues, but also the way Apple makes the devices such a PITA to integrate with anything else.
      My wife has a crappy LG slider phone that I can send and receive files via Bluetooth to and from my desktops with, but the stupid iPhone that is made by the same company as my iMac can't seem to get that simple task done.
      I really like my 3Gs, but I'm starting to wonder if it is actually the best solution for me or if I'm just used to it. If they don't get this figured out soon, I may have to really investigate some Droids and see what they are really about...from what I've seen so far they have some pretty impressive stats to offer...including root access....freakin' Apple

      Ok. So how would apple go about fixing the problem? Completely redesign the iPhone again??

      My friend also says when I answer the phone they hear a clicking sound... Anyone else have that problem?? Could just be I live in the middle of nowhere hahaha

      While this guy said 'possibly tacks on' that is most likely a qualification because he couldn't know the exact amount.

      While it's obvious to state it, the 'Death Grip' solution is either;

      1. Software
      2. Hardware
      3. Both

      If it's Software, there's no additional cost to Apple, they'd be sending out updates periodically any way, it'd simply be another requirement on the list of things to be fixed.

      If the solution involves Hardware, alone or in combination with Software, IMO, Apple is not going do a mass fix for a simple reason. It doesn't affect all iPhones so why recall all of them?

      IMO, Apple will;

      1. Issue 4.01 which will fix some of the Death Grip phones.
      2. Issue instructions to the store on how to handle complaints from people who are still affected which will involve;

      A. Free bumper
      B. If it doesn't solve the problem or the person doesn't want a bumper, offer an exchange.

      I'd love to know what sales figures this expert is using to arrive at $200 million per week.

      You answered your own question. The "death grip" is because of the uncommonly large attenuation the phone gets from holding it. If you live in an area with moderate coverage, it may be enough to drop your signal.

      However if you live somewhere with excellent coverage, you'll never notice it.

      So indirectly, you can also blame AT&T for this :P

      The only issue I have had with my I4 is the oversensitive screen when the phone is to my ear. I have had the phone since launch and the only time I have had dropped calls is when I am driving my car connected to Uconnect. I am left handed and have had no issues with dropped calls or bars dropping. I never paid attention to the bars until this was brought up.

      Just further proof that this reception issue is really a non issue. I read where one firm was going to poll a large amount of people to determine if this issue is widespread or really only a small handful. No one is forced to buy this phone, and if so many people are affected with bad phones, where are the high return rates to prove it? We return everything else if it's broken, why not the iPhone? This whole debacle is just silly if you ask me.

      I guess it's either 'stand up for your principals' or 'just buy a darn $30 bumper and enjoy the latest and greatest fashion accessory.'

      I think a lot of people are willing to bite that $30 bullet.

      Let's be honest, Apple has people by the balls with this. They don't have to do anything -- they can just keep selling their phones to the Apple die-hards and still make a profit year after year.

      I have thought about taking my iphone back, but i haven't got to use it because im waiting for the unlock haha. When that happens i guess ill figure out if I have a good one or bad one haha
      Just take it in and exchange it, that's what I'm doing. Also, the reception/death grip is not the ONLY issue with the iPhone 4. I got mine on 6-23 and I don't have the reception issue but I do have the proximity issue and BT earbud issue (BT device is off, call comes in, answer with iPhone, power on BT device, transfer call to BT device and the other party says my voice is muffled and hard to hear and understand). When I spoke with the Apple Genius during my appointment he said they get 2-5 exchanges a day for the proximity issue and they are aware of it. He had not heard of the bluetooth issue. He did warn me that some people who have gotten a replacement unit discovered that the new unit also had the proximity issue so it is something I will have to monitor for the next few days when I get it which should be tomorrow.

      So back to the topic at hand...

      How about of show of hands of the people who are waiting for the sheeple to buy out the current iPhone4 stocks and provide Apple with enough money to both turn an obscene profit AND begin manufacturing the new iPhone4+ in August?

      im not a complainer but yea you are right... Sell it and make a killing ! the value of the iphone has not decreased just because of these problems.
