  • Apple: Calm Down, Shut Up, and Go Away with Your Death Grip Talk

If we didn't know better here at MMi, I would think that while Steve Jobs has been busy of late telling Apple fans to chill out, breathe, and relax over ridiculous Internet rumors regarding the iPhone 4's perceived reception issues, he's probably trying to tell the same to himself. That is, as more customers report a similar experience with the "Death Grip," Apple is feeling the pressure to do something - anything - to help stop the erosion of the updated smartphone's public luster.

Our friends at BGR indicate that Steve Jobs has gone on yet another email tirade, telling people to "relax" about the "Death Grip" rumors. “It’s just a phone,” Apple's chief tells one inquiring iPhone 4 buyer. “You’re getting worked up over a few days of internet rumors.”

Unfortunately for Steve Jobs and everyone else at Apple, many - including no shortage of readers and contributors to MMi - realize there's a bigger problem here than just an "Internet rumor."

According to the report, one angry customer code named "Tom" was politely informed by Apple that the "hysteria" shouldn't be believed and, as a result of the rampant rumors, he should refrain from perpetuating the cycle of lies and stop posting more comments and videos of the so-called "Death Grip" in action. In other words, Apple told the dude to calm down, shut up, and go away. Hardly a solution to the problem... but to each his own, I guess.

But "Tom" wasn't happy with Apple's recommendation and spouted off with some words that many of us will likely concur with: “You are going to kill your brand over one product. Apple is coming off arrogant and rude. If there is no fix just tell people so they can return their phones. We have work to do. I have bought just about every apple product made in the last 20 years and this is the 1st time I am ashamed to be a MAC fan.”

I have the issue, but only if I try to do it. My normal way of holding the phone apparently does not create this issue. I love my iPhone 4 and I'm not disappointed that I got it; in fact, I'm so much more happier with Apple right now for releasing some of the features that was not on previous versions. Now I can hold my head up high again when my brother takes out his toy Verizon phone!! :-)

      What an incredibly insightful response.

Don't you think if everyone who bought one of these things was having massive problems with them, the story would be a bit bigger than a handful of bored people whining on the internet?

Rally the troops all you want Spartacus, it isn't going to make a lick of difference.

Don't like it, return it. That's the beauty of a fair market system.

Apple's iPhone 4: Thoroughly Reviewed - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

From my day of testing, I've determined that the iPhone 4 performs much better than the 3GS in situations where signal is very low, at -113 dBm (1 bar). Previously, dropping this low all but guaranteed that calls would drop, fail to be placed, and data would no longer be transacted at all. I can honestly say that I've never held onto so many calls and data simultaneously on 1 bar at -113 dBm as I have with the iPhone 4, so it's readily apparent that the new baseband hardware is much more sensitive compared to what was in the 3GS. The difference is that reception is massively better on the iPhone 4 in actual use.

With my bumper case on, I made it further into dead zones than ever before, and into marginal areas that would always drop calls without any problems at all. It's amazing really to experience the difference in sensitivity the iPhone 4 brings compared to the 3GS, and issues from holding the phone aside, reception is absolutely definitely improved. I felt like I was going places no iPhone had ever gone before. There's no doubt in my mind this iPhone gets the best cellular reception yet, even though measured signal is lower than the 3GS.

Your man love for Mr. Jobs goes a bit too far. He is a famous person, he knows exactly what he is doing when he sends someone an email. If anyone cared what I wrote here, and I was stupid enough to write something I didn't want published than it's too bad. You could sell it and make a few bucks. I can't replicate this issue with my phone, but if I did, I'd just return it for one that doesn't.

The only thing I admire about Jobs is how much of a douche he is. Apple literally is "Steve's way or the highway" and it's ridiculous how well it works for them somehow. He TELLS people what to like and people like it. I'm quite confident the man is a wizard.

Jesus people. I am so tired of reading about this. I just browsed through all of these post and 90% of the people who are talking trash DON'T EVEN HAVE A 4! There really is no issue unless you are trying to make it an issue. It's funny how all you hear about is the so called flaw. Why is no one talking about how it has NO lag with over 16 apps running in the background, or about how the camera has been lab tested and takes better photos than any other phone out there? iMovie, though it may be lacking some extended features, is amazing for $5. Lets not forget the amazing screen, front facing cam, or flash. The look of the 4 is beautiful and puts other iphones and all other phones to shame in my opinion. All of the buttons on the phone feel great, and of course how thin it is blows my mind. Check out the speedtest too, the upload speeds blows away all other iPhones.

If you don't like the phone, simply take it back. You have 30 days no questions asked. If you don't own a 4, you have no right to post on how bad it is. For all the people worried about getting one, it is fine. I have had all iPhones and this one is the best by far.

If you spent 1 minute on each app, but the time you reach the 11th app the first one would be closing so you must be some sort of micro-managing savant.

The mere fact that you are returning the product, especially if there are many of you, will get the manufacturer's attention and produce results down the line to mitigate and correct those issues for the next person....who might even be you later on. Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. There are many instances when screaming from the top of your lungs and flailing your arms like a madman to demand attention is appropriate. Buying a piece of "faulty" hardware is not one of them. It has an easy, readily available remedy. RETURN IT IN IT'S ORIGINAL PACKAGING WITH A RECEIPT, GET YOUR MONEY BACK. Everything else in life that ails us should have such an expedient resolution.

Wait...I know...some of you want Steve Jobs himself to come to your home, have you demonstrate the problem to him personally, and have him pay off your mortgage, pay the first year of your kids' college tuition, and oh yeah, replace your iPhone on the spot without you having to leave your home. Oh...and don't forget the free bumper case.

      Grow up.
Well said! People are acting like the iPhone is their God given right. it is a want not a need to live. Return get your money back and move on. Why people are hating so much is behind me. All the bad names they call Steve is childish and sounds like some of our retarded politicians. Feels like we are in the high school hall way... degenerate...

Hope you don't own a Toyota. It wasn't that simple for those customers. But in the end the company did make it right...

wow, I don't understand why everyone is crying and moaning about this. This is the greatest iPhone I have owned to date! The Battery life is amazing, the Display is amazing, the processor is Fast! It has as much RAM as my computer three years ago!, the reception is amazing, (just don't hold it the wrong way, or stop being cheap and buy a Bumper!) The Pros clearly out weight the Cons!

Pretty amazing that Steve would respond personally to customer emails. Hmmm wonder if Obama accepts personnel calls I'm sure he also has the time like Steve. I find the emails a bit on the fishy side. Not saying they are fake but I will wait to judge until the dust settles. After all our media is very quick to publish and point before they confirm any validity.

Toyota made it right,? Only after outcry, and the Government stepping in, did they even admit they had a problem. I doubt the family of the 34 known people that died in Toyota's junk would agree everything was made right..
