  • Apple: Calm Down, Shut Up, and Go Away with Your Death Grip Talk

If we didn't know better here at MMi, I would think that while Steve Jobs has been busy of late telling Apple fans to chill out, breathe, and relax over ridiculous Internet rumors regarding the iPhone 4's perceived reception issues, he's probably trying to tell the same to himself. That is, as more customers report a similar experience with the "Death Grip," Apple is feeling the pressure to do something - anything - to help stop the erosion of the updated smartphone's public luster.

Our friends at BGR indicate that Steve Jobs has gone on yet another email tirade, telling people to "relax" about the "Death Grip" rumors. “It’s just a phone,” Apple's chief tells one inquiring iPhone 4 buyer. “You’re getting worked up over a few days of internet rumors.”

Unfortunately for Steve Jobs and everyone else at Apple, many - including no shortage of readers and contributors to MMi - realize there's a bigger problem here than just an "Internet rumor."

According to the report, one angry customer code named "Tom" was politely informed by Apple that the "hysteria" shouldn't be believed and, as a result of the rampant rumors, he should refrain from perpetuating the cycle of lies and stop posting more comments and videos of the so-called "Death Grip" in action. In other words, Apple told the dude to calm down, shut up, and go away. Hardly a solution to the problem... but to each his own, I guess.

But "Tom" wasn't happy with Apple's recommendation and spouted off with some words that many of us will likely concur with: “You are going to kill your brand over one product. Apple is coming off arrogant and rude. If there is no fix just tell people so they can return their phones. We have work to do. I have bought just about every apple product made in the last 20 years and this is the 1st time I am ashamed to be a MAC fan.”

Apple has just released a statement about the reception issue. It's on the frontpage of Engadget.com, they pretty much saying it's a software issue and that the bars displayed on the phone were innaccurate in the first place. They're releasing a fix in a couple weeks.

Now everyone with an issue is in a holding pattern waiting for "official" word from Apple about what is to be done. Problem is that old 14 or 30 day return policy is tick tick ticking away.

See, if apple comes out and says it is a problem we will take care of it, that is one thing, if they say it isn't a problem that's another thing, but if they say nothing, their current stance, it is a huge problem. And it isn't like taking a toaster back to walmart if it doesn't work, there are these things called contracts, which make it a big headache for at least some of us to deal with if we want to return it.

Now suddenly my wife's phone has started randomly coming up with a, NO SIM message. I hadn't even touched the card yet, so there is something else wrong with the stupid things.
WOW there seems to be a lot of very angry people on here that are taking out their frustration on users. ohh the irony. Its simple all. If it don't work return it NOW. When a fix comes out then repurchase the phone and be happy.

As far as apple waiting... Lets see. If they came out immediately and posted a statement and the fix was not correct people would be like "damn APPLE evil people rushed the fix just to shut us up" and if they gave away cases people would be "this is crap I have to have a case" either way they cant win with some people... Just like people complaining about their launch---"Apple is crap they rushed this iPhone for money and didn't test it" Well I do not think this is correct but....had they pushed the launch people would be "Crap Apple I sold my 3gs and they pushed the launch" Bottom line is there is a issue with the reception (albeit mine is not that bad) but no matter what they do people will not be happy... I think when the fix comes people will still be like "evil steve he owes me for the time I had to wait" . As for the lying e-mails...they do nothing but stir up hate and are counter productive. if he faked the e-mails APPLE should sue him for deification of character. But I guess the predictions where correct... APPLE makes money and out comes the bored Microsoft haters to start on Apple...

--Give them time to do the correct research. I still think it is software... Same issues on some of our GPS for our mil products... and what do you know software fixed the issue...

Lastly if your reception is that bad TAKE THE DAMN THING BACK! This phone is not needed for you to breath eat and live. Get a different brand! For those that pen 700 Euro. well sorry for the price in your country... I lived in EU for 20 years. Cell phones are not the only thing that cost more... shoot gas was taxed to the tune of 75% in Germany hence almost paying $8 a gallon. Bottom line is demographics of the price has nothing to do with the reception issue or your right to return the product that does not work for you.

Finally stop cussing people out on this forum... its rude and very ignorant. Not needed, if you are that pissed return your product. Simple!

Now all... hope you have a great day and lets hope for a JB soon to unleash this bad boy... :-)

This makes sense... My 3gs is showing 2 bars right now in edge and my i4 is showing 4 on 3g. All along I thought ATT boosted their signal... This would also explain why I have no death grip in town where I traditionally get full sig on 3g. I am sure its more than that in the soft fix. but like I posted before... Apple changed their refresh and search rate for carrier signal. Perhaps this contributes to the issue. ATT needs to do the rig thing and boost their signal. Oh and update their coverage map o reflect proper service areas...

I bet ATT is like... DAMN...Well the blame on Apple didn't last long enough for us to update our cell towers... Get ready employees the irate customers are going to start lining up again.... LMAO>>>

Read the letter on the Apple site.

Letter from Apple Regarding iPhone 4

The only admission they have made is that they improperly calculate signal strength. Basically, the bars are lying to you telling you your reception is better than it is. They are also claiming that this affects ALL iPhones all the way back to the original, not just the iPhone 4.

If this is true, then whatever update they claim they will release in the coming weeks will do nothing to fix the problem of users dropping calls and complete data transfer loss (as observed in the Vimeo video posted earlier). I suspect this is just an attempt at buying time to find the real problem and fix it.

Yep I forgot this option, which is of course the worst of all. The there is something wrong, but we'll artificially change the signal strength meter so it all looks good, even though you are dropping calls.

Actually, the change to the signal meter should more accurately show the signal loss when touching the phone after they make this update.

Hopefully, regardless of whether or not we lose signal when we grab the phone, it will be nice to see the actual signal strengths. I just wish it was sooner rather than later, two weeks is getting close to return day for me.

You're telling people that are having problems with their new iPhones to "shut up" and "move on". I'm willing to bet anything that if you or your wife's iPhone strarted having problems you'd change your smart *** attitude real quick! Just because it's not happening to you doesn't mean it's not a problem *** wipe! Stupid Apple fanboys!

I was expecting the bars to drop off immediately but they don't, they WILL drop after about 10 seconds of holding like you would texting, playing a game, etc.. after about 30 seconds, you will have either no signal or no bars. WiFi is also affected the same way but not as dramatic.

The sim card mod does NOT work. I pulled my sim card and taped the edge and so it was not contacting the metal and it still has the same problem.

Also, I have a Belkin rubber case and the bars drop on it also, not to the extent they do when I hold it bare handed (3 bar drop). It's not about shorting out the antenna, it's about interference caused by the physical proximity of your hand to the antenna and the antenna signals going through your hand.

This is a real problem, re-creatable at will and re-creatable on every IPhone I have tested it on including phones in the Apple store.
I agree. I have until the 15th to make a decision but I am leaning toward returning the phone. The problem is interference based on proximity of the left hand to the phone. A case helps minimally and the problem is less pronounced in areas with a good signal. Since i bought thisnphone to improve my reception, this has been a bust. And Apple fanboys, stfu.

i wonder what the apple bumper case actually does. I recently bought a zagg invisishield and i noticed my battery was losing power relatively quickly from when i bought the phone and didnt have a cover.

I realized that some of the zagg shield was covering the top and bottom left antenna and every time i picked up the phone the bars were down. So it was constantly searching for a signal.Took the strips off and now its fine.

Really weird. Wonder why the bumper doesnt affect it the same way. Probably the only case that helps the problem.
