  • Apple: Calm Down, Shut Up, and Go Away with Your Death Grip Talk

If we didn't know better here at MMi, I would think that while Steve Jobs has been busy of late telling Apple fans to chill out, breathe, and relax over ridiculous Internet rumors regarding the iPhone 4's perceived reception issues, he's probably trying to tell the same to himself. That is, as more customers report a similar experience with the "Death Grip," Apple is feeling the pressure to do something - anything - to help stop the erosion of the updated smartphone's public luster.

Our friends at BGR indicate that Steve Jobs has gone on yet another email tirade, telling people to "relax" about the "Death Grip" rumors. “It’s just a phone,” Apple's chief tells one inquiring iPhone 4 buyer. “You’re getting worked up over a few days of internet rumors.”

Unfortunately for Steve Jobs and everyone else at Apple, many - including no shortage of readers and contributors to MMi - realize there's a bigger problem here than just an "Internet rumor."

According to the report, one angry customer code named "Tom" was politely informed by Apple that the "hysteria" shouldn't be believed and, as a result of the rampant rumors, he should refrain from perpetuating the cycle of lies and stop posting more comments and videos of the so-called "Death Grip" in action. In other words, Apple told the dude to calm down, shut up, and go away. Hardly a solution to the problem... but to each his own, I guess.

But "Tom" wasn't happy with Apple's recommendation and spouted off with some words that many of us will likely concur with: “You are going to kill your brand over one product. Apple is coming off arrogant and rude. If there is no fix just tell people so they can return their phones. We have work to do. I have bought just about every apple product made in the last 20 years and this is the 1st time I am ashamed to be a MAC fan.”

You are correct. I did a lot of tests on mine just because I am bored and like to figure out things. In my city where the signal is strong I do not have an issue. Also when i give it to my daughter she does not have the death grip. Also my friends iPhone doesn't have any death grip issues. With that said I think that Apple is doing the right thing by not doing a knee jerk reaction to a quick fix. I think they are working hard to find the issue. Nothing would be worse than to say they have a solution and it turns out to be a combination of issues. What I do feel they should do is post a comment that "due to the overwhelming tech support questions on the death grip, Apple is currently looking into the problem" Please be patient... Now on the reception. ALL phones have some sort of reception loss when held. But.... and I will stress BUT!!! Not all phones are as awesome as the iPhone... Expecially the iPhone 4!!! And my fellow iPhone lovers... Just wait until we can JB this bad boy!!! Talk about unleashing the HP under the hood of this thing...

      Cheers

      DK

      *sigh*

I think it could have been handled better, but I think this is far more in the media than it is in reality.

Clearly there is an issue, I'm guessing it is a software fix, though the design where someone is touching the antennae is..curious. I'm putting an Incipio Feather or other case so I'm not touching the steel anyway.

In a month, this won't be news any more...

[edit - finding out the e-mails from Jobs are fakes isn't surprising. At all.]

It hos not been 30 days yet so you will gladly get your money back. Case closed.

There are many of us who are EXTREMELY happy with this product with COUNTLESS others who want the iPhone 4 and can't get their hands on one because of limited availability. Return your phone or sell it via the internet...I'm sure you will have many possible suitors...reception problems or no reception problems.

I HATE IT when consumers, especially technology consumers, complain as if the world owed them something and don't take into consideration the millions of dollars that went into R&D and product design. Apple, in my estimation, is the worldwide leader in both areas and I am thankful that I am able to avail myself to their work and get to use their products. They are well made and fun to use.

For those who feel slighted or otherwise, return the product you are having an issue with and switch to any one of the many Droid, Android, Blackberry, Samsung, LG, Motorola, or other manufacturer's product that makes you happier. I am sticking with Apple.

And if its true that Steve Jobs has taken the tact that was mentioned in this article...GOOD FOR HIM! SHUT UP, BE QUIET, AND MOVE ON IF YOU'RE NOT HAPPY. There are plenty of us that are!!!!!

      My two cents...
I feel sorry for you if you think a flawed product is "OK" to sell, then deny there is an issue.

Mine has the problem & so does the 5 other people I know with the phone (phones came from 3 different stores...Apple, Best Buy, & AT&T). At this point I want to find someone who does not have the problem. Are those who said that they aren't having the issue holding the lower left band seam for at least a minute? The problem sometimes would take longer to occur but eventually ALWAYS drops signal by 4 bars or to searching.....Granted I don't have to have my hand on that part of the phone all the time but when I make a speakerphone call I use that grip.

New Futurama episode started today called "Attack of the Killer App". "Customer Service guy: Ok. It's $500. You have no choice of Carriers. The battery can't really hold a charge. And the reception isn't very... Fry: Shut up and take my money!!"

Claiming to have bought all the iphones in the past is buggery, and you know it. If you did, you would have had a case and you would not have posted here. The facts are there, the numbers are there, deal with it... those that don't have problems don't post about it, those that do make it sound as if everyone is posting about it... but that simply is not the case (pun intended)
Ok, you are just getting annoying with this case crap. One, you need to wake up and realize this is a problem and that just because you can't replicate it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Two, I have owned the 2G, and the 3G both of which have never had an issue and yes I will admit that I did use a case on them when I left my house. Although when I was at home I didn't use a case and this "Death-Grip" problem did not happen. Three, do you know anything about electronics? I will say that yes since the antennas are on the outside of this phone there probably will be a reception disruption. Yes of course the problem will be solved by putting a case on the phone because there is an insulator between your skin contacting the metal which is the antenna. Do I think it's right that you have to spend anywhere from $200 to $700 for the new phone and then have to pay an additional $30 for a case to make it work? No, I don't think it is right. Maybe, just maybe, some people do not want to buy a case to have on their phone. Maybe they don't want it to look like every other phone.

So in a nutshell if this is happening to the phone there should have been a warning that came from Apple stating simply that the phone's antennas are on the outside of the phone now and there is a possibility that making contact with the bottom left corner could cause a decrease in signal. This may happen to some phones and not others.

Wow, those that have been told to return it for a refund are refusing to do so, or are like "why should I have to do so..." like you were forced to buy the phone. What do you do with any piece of technological equipment if it doesn't work properly, keep it? It's idiotic and ridiculous, and for the 'hater' fanboys, Noodle just posted that the emails were fake. Now, the saddest part of all of the bashing... is that you were duped... not by apple, but of your own ilk, a hater! LOLOL Damn man, if it doesn't work, get off your lazy *** and return it. What's so hard about that, and why keep it? So haters, stop tell other who don't have a problem to STFU, because it's obvious that you feel that you are entitled to have them come to your door like geek sqaud and fix it, but the fact of the matter is... you ready, NOTHING IS EVER GOING TO BE PERFECT, so really, quit ******** and do what most intelligent consumers do, go get an exchange or refund. Keep it simple, stupid, dummy.

Perhaps you are missing something. Most of the apple fan boys have been using the fake emails from SJ to show that apple said there was no problem. They then told everyone who actually owned an iphone 4 to return it. Now come to find out, Apple actually hasn't stated if it is a problem or not. Now everyone with an issue is in a holding pattern waiting for "official" word from Apple about what is to be done. Problem is that old 14 or 30 day return policy is tick tick ticking away.

See, if apple comes out and says it is a problem we will take care of it, that is one thing, if they say it isn't a problem that's another thing, but if they say nothing, their current stance, it is a huge problem. And it isn't like taking a toaster back to walmart if it doesn't work, there are these things called contracts, which make it a big headache for at least some of us to deal with if we want to return it.

Now suddenly my wife's phone has started randomly coming up with a, NO SIM message. I hadn't even touched the card yet, so there is something else wrong with the stupid things.
