  • Possible fix for reception issues?

Some crazy (read: awesome) fellow over at [ame=http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=955742]MacRumors[/ame] may have accidentally run into the real cause of the so dreaded reception issue that has been plaguing the iPhone 4. The benefit of finding the cause is that the solution is so simple I'm still having trouble believing until I tried it myself.

    It actually worked.

For those that can't be bothered to click or links or have the attention span of a cat on caffeine, here's the summary:

After taking my sim card out to test this I inspected it closer for the first time.

The metal part of the sim card is not centered and is contacting the sim tray. The sim tray is steel and the sim tray is contacting the outer antenna band. Once you touch the phone, this could be causing a sim issue.

If when you touch the antenna line on the lower left it changes the state of frequency, power or what ever, it might actually be messing with the sim card.

The metal on the sim is connected to the sim tray, the sim tray is connected to the antenae and the antenae is connected to your hand when you touch the phone.

Take a look at your sim card and see if the metal is just off center enough to touch the tray. This might be so simple it's stupid nobody has thought of this.
The general result from people posting there have been positive. "Fixing" this issue however can be tricky for some. As everyone knows, iPhone 4 runs a Micro SIM card, and the tray is designed as such that you really have no wiggle space to reposition it in order to avoid the sim memory to touch the tray. I personally used tape and it worked. Others have taken different approaches to the issue (cutting, coating, sacrificial goat), but the goal is the same: Don't let the sim memory (gold contacts) touch the tray!

NOTE: Of course you can still death palm it and get the signal to fail, this is more directed at those users that have signal issues just by covering the slit with their finger, etc. There seems to be mixed results, maybe it does something, maybe it doesn't.

Feel free to post your results here.

after reading this, i laid a piece of tape down over the micro sim tray, and then cut out with an exacto knife. leaving only the pary of the sim try that come into contact with the sim card itself covered and it worked! i havent been able to drop the signal like i used to. although ive been able to drop some signal by holding the phone in my left hand, i still retain 3 or 4 out of 5 bars after protecting the sim from grounding itself to the chassis. thanks man!

Same here.... Still drops when touching the seam. I have found that touching the "death spot" while in the middle of loading a large website (ny times) it will stop the progression right when you do so. I am sure that the metal on my sim is not touching metal in the tray. The trays as you will all see are already coated on that side with a non conductive material.... No go

Spoke too soon. Doesn't work. Going to Atlanta this weekend so I'll see if actually having coverage that's worth a damn makes a difference.

      Hello? He's an Apple Genius!

I tried the tape trick and it didnt work for me. Signal dropped like a lead balloon! Ever since upgrading my 3GS to 4.0 and then getting an iPhone 4, I've noticed I am not getting 3G speeds as much. Mostly Edge. Can it be iOS4?

sorry to burst peoples bubbles but this isnt the reason. I to thought this could be the culprit a few days ago and i was going to jump on the inter-webs and find my moment of fame but then i double checked. If you look at the sim tray there is a layer that is non conductive. take a multimeter and touch the non-conductive spot and then the outside of the tray. Sorry to everyone that had their time wasted by this. And the few that cut their sim cards

I did the 'tape mod' and to my suprise I got a SIGNIFICANT bandwith improvement. Download speeds nearly doubled, uploads went up a tad, ping the same. Same app, nearly the same time of day...

Im going to record a video of the speedtest with the tape, remove the tape, and do it again... I never got a speedtest in the 2MBIT+ range on my iPhone 4, 3G, or 3GS at home. And did with ease with tape over the sim...

I used taped. It took less than 5 minutes. It worked.

      Update: Not working.

Update: Works sometimes and sometimes doesn't work.
