Report: Major Layoffs Expected at Microsoft
As Microsoft continues to struggle on a competitive mobile landscape ruled by iOS and Android in the smartphone and tablet arenas, the software giant and aspiring mobile tech titan is expected to confirm a sweeping round of layoffs in the very near future.
Although spokespersons for the company are presently refusing to comment on the speculation, we're told that thousands of jobs will soon be relinquished -- its biggest round of job cuts in five years.
According to Bloomberg, the software maker wants to "slim down and integrate Nokia Oyj’s handset unit." For the time being, it remains unclear just how many jobs may be cut, however, it appears likely that Microsoft will shed even more than the 5,800 jobs cut in 2009, when Microsoft last lightened its workforce amidst efforts to scale back financial obligations.
As of early June, Microsoft employed just over 127,000 individuals.
